The Gold one sounds really nice and most flexible to me. It all depends on the style and on the song of course. But there's something about the Gold tone and response (the way you've demonstrated) appeals to me more.
Do you still have them? How about the black magic? I have the BM and I’m thinking about getting another one to compliment it but not sure which one. I’m a Strat player too. What’s your opinion? Thanks.
An original white and black is probably the best (IMO) for a Strat and is also different enough from the black magic to complement it. The gold is a cleaner and more transparent version of the Zen. I still have them all. They're all really great OD pedals.
I prefer the original too, but only for 'lead' guitar. When I want the Zen flavor but in situations where I play more rhythm guitar, I'll pick the Red Dot for rock and the Gold for funk, soul and R&B applications. *I did just get a 'Black Magik' Zen but have not done a comparison as of yet. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I just can't pay $500 for a used overdrive. Can't do it out of principal. Ugh. Nothing sounds like it though and I love it. Maybe I'll bite the bullet one day.
How do the original Hermida Audio Zendrives compare to the Lovepedal versions (That still say Hermida Audio on the pedal). And how can anyone identify if its made by Lovepedal or the original Hermida Audio people? And in your opinion which sounds better, the Lovepedal versions or the original versions of the zendrive?
Neither better nor worse in my opinion. Just different. I like them all personally. Skip to 19:38 for my 'conclusion' statement. In a nutshell ... Black & White original Hermida will get you closest to the classic Robben Ford tone (providing you actually can play like RF). Red has more gain and is bigger, or more diffuse sounding (great for rock rhythm tones). Gold is voiced cleaner with less gain. There's also a 'Black Magik' version that I have not compared yet. If I had to only go with one, I would pick the original Hermida Black & White Zen. I'm not positive how to tell an original from a Lovepedal version. All I know is that my B&W Zen, I purchased it directly from Alf Hermida, long before there even was a Lovepedal. I know that my vid is way too long but if you listen with headphones, you'll clearly hear the differences.
Hey Ken, thank you for posting your very helpful video. I really like the Gold Zen & I'm looking at buying one. Please could you tell me the exact model, it looks like a Zendrive 2 Gold, is that correct?

Because the Gold 'cleans up' the best, it is probably the most versatile. *Good ears AK!

@@KenLasaine Red is also the one for good for blues tones - but I guess that comes under he very broad definition of rock.

I wouldn't pay $500 either.

All I know is that it's a Sean (Lovepedal) gold Zen and it's a relatively recent build. 2018.
Yo Ken!!
Hey Will!
Damn! I fell asleep!!
Yeah, I know - way too long. I'm into subtlety.
