I'm an old white dude who grew up in Florida, but I was stationed at Camp Pendleton in San Diego North County during the mid-80's and we absolutely loved checking out the lowriders and the Chicano culture on weekends in San Diego! Everyone was amazingly friendly and eager to show off all of their hard work that they invested in building their cars. Pure rolling art! And the food? Out of this world amazing! Wonderful people, colorful culture, and very proud!
don't leave out Cheech and Chong! I am an old white dude too, but I was an Air Force brat, so we moved alot, started high school in Hawaii, graduated in Utah(50 years ago this year!lol)
, I just felt connected to the whole Chicano thing, I always loved cars and I appreciate the dedication it takes to do the low-rider culture, is just love

My family and I moved to Los Angeles from Miami back in 74. And it was a culture shock from my disco bell bottoms, to my platform shoes, safari shirt and Fro. When most of them were wearing Dickies and flannel shirts. I fit in like a "Frijol negro on a bed of white rice". One time a friend invited me to her house for her mom's freshly made tortillas. Dopey me i expected a Tortilla Española. With my friends and in high school shop class I built my veru first lowrider in 1977. And it was Suave!!😎

We definitely do consider ourselves American. We just have a new culture that is a result of being of Mexican heritage and growing up in the US, that doesn't change the fact that we are Americans

We consider ourselves American because that's our Nationality, we also consider ourselves to be Mexican because of our Ethnic background, those concepts don't interfere with each other; you can be 100% Mexican and 100% American, because they are in 2 completely different categories. It's like a Nigerian man from England, they consider themselves to be English because that's their Nationality, but they still know that they are Nigerian by heritage

i grew up in a Tejano community in (surprise) Texas. Tejanos are people of Mexican descent that have lived in Texas for a few hundred years. other than a doctor, nurse, or parents, the first person to hold me was Abuelita Riojas. i have fond memories of of the people and the times. my comfort foods are beans and rice (frijoles y arroz), tamales, enchiladas, etc. so when i am feeling sick or burned out, these are the things i crave.
I'm an Anglo from Texas and there wouldn't be a Texas without freedom-loving Mexicans who fought side by side with the Anglos to separate from Mexico.

Im more proud of the country/state I live in than grouping together with people of similar blood. But that’s just me man. I don’t wanna be stereotyped. Like not trying to be racist. But I see a lotta blacks wearing do rags and talking like gangsters. But then I’ll see one wearing a cowboy hat and camo. Or I’ll see one really clean cut.
It’s nice and refreshing. We all don’t gotta live the same lifestyle. That’s why I’m split on Chicanos. Or groups like it. On the one hand. I appreciate that it exists purely for the art. On the other hand, I wouldn’t want people to give up their unique personality and life style choices just to conform to a larger group of similar people who provide a comfort of identity.
One thing that is certain is that you are correct, that by definition we are Chicano, but the thing is is that Chicano culture is different than what is Mexican culture in the United States. like in the video, there is art, fashion, language, music etc. In my family, my mother is Chicana, but my dad is not since he immigrated to the US later in life. Then there is me, the way I look at it, I am official Chicano, culturally I am not though. I was raised by Mexican immigrants so if you ask me I will say I am an American Mexican. Chicano culture from what I understand is looking at the American psyche through Mexican American eyes. I think some really good example of Chicano and Chicana writers are Sandra Cisneros, Rudolfo Amaya, and Juan Felipe Herrera. I am really happy that you got to explore this part of Mexican American culture. Saludos de Los Angeles!
I agree 100%, to me there is a clear difference between Mexican-Americans and Chicanos.
Chicanos often don't and aren't expected to speak Spanish well for example, whereas Mexican-Americans, being the direct children or grandkids of actual Mexicans, are often fluent. Mexican-Americans largely are familiar with modern Mexican culture (70s-present day) whereas Chicanos are often only "familiar" with an older Mexican culture that no longer exists.
Well…as a Puerto Rican born in New York, I had no idea what the Chicano culture was all about, thank you for giving me a brief insight into what it is, I can see there is a lot more research to do, maybe one day I’ll travel to the west coast and experience it for myself . I am a car guy, so seeing all those classic cars was very nice. Thanks for posting the video, I really enjoyed it.

Bit of trivia: The father of Zach de la Rocha, the lead singer of Rage Against The Machine, was a prominent artist in the Chicano movement in the 70s, as a member of Los Four. Sadly, his struggles with mental illness caused him to disavow his art. The song "Born of A Broken Man" is about him, and Zach's feelings about what happened to him.

LOVE IT! I’m a Chicana living in San Diego my whole life. I went to Jr High at Memorial on Logan Avenue in Barrio Logan right next to Chicano Park. So that was cool to see you guys there. And yes, you are 100% right…the reason we have Fidel and Che in the mural is purely a lack of understanding about history. There’s sadly a lot of murals around SD that have people who are being immortalized for very wrong reasons. But on a happier note, now I seriously want an elote y tostilocos!! Mmmm. Que rico!🤤🌽🇲🇽🇺🇸

Half my grandparents were born here in L.A. (of Mexican descent) and the other half born in Mexico. My grandfather on my mother's side was born in Mexico and he taught his kids and everyone else that he is American first.
Not everyone in the Chicano culture thinks they're Mexican first. And a lot refuse to be called Mexican-American. My family is full of proud Americans, all of Mexican descent.

I grew up in East L.A. and a huge percentage of the people I went to school with would technically be Chicano, but they were as American as I was in every way and most did not even speak Spanish though most of their parents did, at least to an extend and grandma almost always spoke primarily Spanish. The funny part is that I never really noticed that they were of any certain ethnicity until many years later when I found my senior annual and started reading all the messages from my friends. By that time, I was more aware and noticed than nearly all of the last names were Hispanic names. It made me laugh, I guess it just never mattered to me one way or the other to the extent that I just never noticed. I had a few friends who were first generation or came here as children and I was more aware of them because most of them had accents. Los Angeles is such a melting pot, that friends, classmates and neighbors are just a mix of people and that is it. The "Chicanos" were the people in the car clubs for the most part and kind of kept to themselves. They really didn't assimilate and often it was strange because they would be a few generations American Citizens and their parents and families would usually be fully assimilated but those who called themselves Chicanos really had fallen out for some reason, wanted to go back to their roots, though many of them didn't speak Spanish either, or not very well. In most families the language at home was English. I liked growing in communities with diversity and as an adult, I have lived many places but was never comfortable unless there was a good mixture of cultures.

Not sure if anybody pointed out but the dude at 3:13 is Xavier The X Man, a San Diego Chicano staple. He’s a lowrider, entrepreneur (Xteca Beer) and local radio DJ who has an oldies/old school show on Sundays. He also is known for a charity lowrider cruising event called Cruise For The Cause to help kids with cancer. Down ass foo.

It made me think of what others subcultures and events (from concerts to farmers markets) that you could explore with a no pressure budget.

It is a college course I took. The term was wrong here. It’s not Mex American it’s South American includes Bolivia etc.
Chicano Culture is not only found in Southern California. I grew up in San Jose, CA, and it was very prevalent there and throughout Northern California.
American Mexicano Beverly Hills Downey California. I speak Spanglish with family and friends and work and business, English only. Downey has largest Black Cuban community..
I grew up in Southern California. My High School was actually in a very Mexican city named La Habra. Half the school were white kids, some Mexican who spoke English & some fresh across the border who didn’t even speak English. My Uncle & his family came from Mexico, so my cousins are 1/2 Mexican. Growing up in So Cal, it’s just natural.

Love this! People too often forget that MOST of the southwest US used to be part of Mexico (before the Spanish empire collapsed). Makes me so sad when narrow-minded people consider the celebration of that culture to be a unamerican or whatever you want to call it. This kind of stuff is ingrained in our DNA, it's part of us, and part of what makes this country so great!

I'm Mexican American and I never considered myself Chicana. Where I grew up Chicanos, lowriders, Cholos were gang members. That was "my experience".
Next time you're on Los Angeles, stop by the San Pedro fish market. Have him pick out some seafood. They'll clean and cook it for you and serve it with some garlic butter and vegetables. Have it with a nice cold beer over looking the ocean. Then go on a boat tour around the San Pedro harbor to see the shipping containers come in from overseas on those massive boats.

Miami actually has a Cuban American subculture in there. It’s geared more towards living fast and fast cars. They actually have an accent all their owned defined as Miami Latin English by scholars. It has a very heavy L sound combined with a lower tone. It just sounds different. San Diego is very Mexican culturally speaking and it has its own English accent defined by lots of Spanish in sentences and a very Mexican accent that sounds like they crossed the border two days ago but actually they are long time residents of California. New York also has this heavy L sound but it’s more defined by Italians and Europeans.
Mexicans have been in Cali and the South West before it was even part of New England.not all Mexicans migrated to U.S there some who have been here generations.

I grew up in SoCal. In our culture the women weren't allowed to go out by themselves! My sister was the eldest, I'm the baby, whenever she went anywhere she had to take me. Thats included some nights cruising! Damn i miss those innocent days!!!!!

What a great adventure! My older brothers were in car clubs in the '60's. They worked hard to show the community (grew up in East Pasadena) that they were good young men.
I chose a small, very affordable Catholic HS in Pasadena (west side, now trendy Old Town Pasadena. Was NOT "nice" or trendy back then.
Because I knew girls from other cultures, including cultura mexicana y chicana, went to school there. Most of us, including me, came from poorer families.
My ethnicity is actually German, pero me encanta el lenguaje y las culturas de Mexico y otros países del America central y del sur.
I have been able to advocate for my patients/clients from all cultures during 40 years as a mental health RN.

I think Mexicans tend to wear black because any logo or designs on the shirt stands out much more and if you wear a chain, color bandana, white shoes, they stand out more as well. They like the pop/contrast and the clean look that it gives. Plus, everything goes with black and it matches their shades.
Nah it’s just the vintage and style of Chicano culture is from the mid 1900s where everything was black and white, Chicano art and tattoos are all like that
I am a Chicana. I grew up in Los Angeles. Cruising in these types of cars... it's like you're teleported to another world. You are seen by everyone, so I understand when they say it's like therapy, and yes, the cars are art.

Iv lived in San Diego my whole life and my best friend growing up family was Chicano. And i can tell u, they r some of the most loyal and loving people iv ever know (my best friend turned out to be a complete pos but she was not part of the culture, she turned her back on it, but her family was and they r very loyal and good people)

Me as a Chicano i will never forget what my old Man told me don't you never forget where you came from your Culture your background As an Mexican American im proud of my culture and that's what im trying to teach my kids to not forget where you came from what culture you came from and be pround.
A huge contributing factor to the Chicano culture comes from those of our families who did not cross the border but the border crossed us, a lot of Mexicans didn't leave their homes in Mexico just because the US said it was California. Rebranding parts of Mexico didn't out right nullify native Mexican culture but caused it to evolve into Chicano culture. Regardless much love to all people.

My grandfather and his friends used the term Chicano in the 1920s. They didn't use it as a slur but a way to distinguish U.S. born of Mexican descent. In Mexico City many explained to me Chicano is from mexicano. Pronounced by the Aztec in Nahuatl as me-SHI-can-o. Of course in Spanish, there's no "sh" sound, so the pronunciation changed.
I'm Mexican American from the East side suburbs of L.A. and don't know why Chicanos wear so much black, either. 😊I'm surprised you didn't visit Olvera Street. If only it were a bit later in the year you could have experienced a Dia de los Muertos event; there are multiple large events around L.A. in Octorber.
I'm an old Chicana from Nuevo Mexico. I think wearing black is a carryover following the Pachuco days. My big brothers dressed like The Fonz but still considered as Pachucos like from our uncle's 1940s era. My brothers slicked their pompadours with La Parot hair grease, used taps on their spit shine shoes, wore black leather jackets and walked like Danny Zuko from the movie Grease
Just wonderful, I moved from San Diego to New Mexico and I wondered where all the Chicanos were? And I missed that part of So Cal! Great time watching Joel experience a different culture! Maybe someday experience a Russian tea room! LOL!

Love watching your videos! I would love to see you two go to a Renaissance Festival. About every State has at least one. It is a festival where people dress up like Europeans from 600years ago....knights in armor, riding horses...the entire "village" looks like the days of the Middle Ages. Mari, you can wear a dress of that time & Yoel could get a sword! There are also games where you can throw an ax or shoot a bow!
You need to edit that part about Chicanos not considering themselves American. So many of my Chicano friends are proud to be American and Chicano. The US military is filled with Mexican Americans and the are 100 % proud to be Americans. Please consider changing this.
