I just got my 4848 a few days ago. I’m in the middle of a computer build (We have all the parts, and we’ll be done with it in a few days). I also bought a $200 40” tv and a $200 touch screen overlay I bought for it... so for the price of two normal monitors I got a Raven style controller/monitor (Studio One has touchscreen multitouch support). We will see how well it works. I’m looking forward to trying it out.
The setup has been great. I got both the TV and the touchscreen overlay off of Amazon. I also went to Lowe’s and picked up some plexiglass to go in between the touch screen overlay and the TV.
I just recently bought a second 4848 even though they are now discontinued. I ordered the second 4848 from a pawn shop somewhere on line. I did have some issues with that one though, so I have it at an authorized Presonus repair shop right now. Once I get it back I’ll be able to keep my hybrid system expanding with another 500 series chassis (Probably a Wes Audio Supercarrier II). My wife is a blessing.
Thanks for the video! I am looking at the 4848 for live sound purposes. Do you think this thing could handle being in a traveling road case with casters day after day?
Great Video! thank you. Do you have any opinion on the way the 4848 sounds? I have for many years now an Apogee 16x system, I use D-subs from class A mic pre's and D-subs to BURL B32 summing out. Do you think I would hear a difference in quality or clarity of sound? thx again for any help.

Should work well. I'm using the pure2 to clock the quantum and quantum 4848. Every now and then I have to switch the clock source in universal control to internal and back to world clock to get everything to sync again. Usually happens when the screen if off for a while as it's gone to sleep making it lose connection with the quantums until I wake it up again.
Hi, very informative video. Just one point I didn't get is why the output meters are displayed as pairs on the driver screen? I mean, as I understand it's able to send individual mono signals to each of the output - because you can send mono outputs with the pipeline . But why does it display the outputs like they're paired stereos? I don't know if you still have the interface but I'd be glad if you can give a little information about this it's confusing for me. Did you need to create an aggregate device to use these as shown or is that unnecessary with the UCB control settings? Have a Quantum 1 and a 4848 on the way, both will be clocked to a separate word clock master.
You will need to create an aggregated device if you want to use the quantum and the quantum 4848 together as one interface. I'm clocking both of my quantums to my antelope here too. But you can take a BNC cable and clock to one or the other. I'd clock to the quantum, and have it as the master, and have the quantum 4848 as the slave

Hey man, i'm searching for a new interface and the 4848 seems to be good (i'm working in studio one). But i can't find any real world test of it latency when it comes to big projects with lot of plugins, did you test it? I usually run session with 50 to 150 tracks with plugins on every tracks (especially Kush audio) and i sum my tracks trough an old console to go back right into Studio One for mixbus and printing. I wonder how the 4848 performs for this type of setup? Thanks!
Thanks for the review of the Quantum 4848. I just picked it up also, replacing a Zen studio. I hope you will do a video showing your patchbay and outboard set up. I am working on integrating my outboard and patchbay to the Quantum. Curious also about the way you set up the presets in Pipeline XT.

I had a bad experience with Antelope so I can't recommend it. I'll be selling my pure 2 once something comes out i like to replace it. But Apogee makes really good converters

Thanks, Audio. You've got a talent for being thorough AND to the point. My buddy and I are researching high I/O interfaces this weekend and this was the perfect review to stumble on. If I could echo one of the comments above ... it would be terrific to hear your opinion of the conversion quality compared to an Antelope or old model Apollo. I'm assuming (and hoping) we're talking only a 5-15% level of inferiority, as opposed to a massively inferior soundstage, compared to those units. Thanks again.@@TheAudioCzar
How has it been reliability wise? I just picked up an old analog desk and I need conversion. This looks like it could fit the bill for a reasonable price.
Probably not quite as good. Most likely close, but splitting hairs most likely. No matter how many people who paid big bucks for the AA gear will try to justify their purchase, the differences will not be night and day for general I/O usage. I'm not saying I know for sure, but I have had AA gear and Presonus gear and there is a difference. Good or bad difference is up to your ears. Czar here also has a nice AA Pure 2 above the Quantum 4848 in his rack. The Presonus is most likely not being used for monitoring. That Pure 2 is probably coming off the Quantum's SPDIF and doing his final conversion to his monitors (I could be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time, but that would make a lot of sense that way).
@@robfulco4739 I would probably would of went for a MOTU 16A. It's way more scalable with alot of features esp AVB network connectivity. It's the closest thing to Apogee that has an ESS Sabre DAC inside but format factor type is like a Focusrite RedNet. I have the Motu 828ES that I use as a AD / DA converter with my outboard and it sounds great.
Hey man thanks for the vid... I have a Quantum and have now purchased a few nice pre's, was wondering if I bought the 4848 and ran the pre's through that as opposed to running them line in on the Quantum would that be a better way to go?
I wouldn't get a 4848 just to run to pres through, If you have that many pres I'd look at getting a patch bay. Or the 16 channel flock audio digital patch bay. If you have a bunch of analog gear and use studio one then the 4848 would make more sense because you can use it as a patch bay in studio one.
1. can the 4848 used as a stand alone interface ? 2. since regular pro tools has a maximum 32 channel I/o is it still able to work ? and yes I do know pro tools hd has more i/o lol just not that rich haha. thanks in advance

Just interjecting here...Pro Tools HD (or called Pro Tools Ultimate now) only has 32 channels of I/O when using it with any third party hardware like this interface. Just because all 48 I/O shows up in Pro Tools/Pro Tools Ultimate, that doesn't mean they all can be used at once. Even when using the Ultimate version of PTs. The only way to get more simultaneous I/O in PTs Ultimate, is to be using the HD Native or HDX PCIe cards from Avid, and supported converters for the connection to those PCIe cards. Whether it's Avid's converters, or Lynx, or Apogee, etc. that have the digilink connectors. But Presonus is not made/does not have the digilink connection for Avid's PCIe cards. Take the UAD Apollo series of interfaces. I could daisy chain an Apollo Twin to an X6 to an X8 to an X16 all going into Pro Tools Ultimate. That's 62 channels of Input and 72 channels of Output. Logic will see and use all 62x72 I/O. Presonus Studio One will use all 62x72 I/O. Pro Tools HD (Ultimate) will only be able to use 32x32 I/O.

Another main reason I got it is because it has thunderbolt for mac and pc and usb for mac and pc, because I'm not sure what system I'll be running in the future and I feel like it will give me abit more flexibility. I like your new setup though. I've been really thinking about getting Studio One aswell for editing, mixing and mastering. I love Ableton for making beats and just general recording and sound design stuff but I feel it lacks for mixing. For example , you can't send track to multiple busses, which is not cool:)
Hey man, I’ve just purchased a 4848. And I’m having trouble getting my 2012 Mac mini to talk to the device. The thunderbolt light is flashing blue. And the power button is red. When I go into UC to set it up. The “show all devices” button is grayed out. Wondering if you had any advice for me. Thanks mate.
Sounds like your unit may be defective, I would contact your dealer or presonus support. If you haven't already try a different cable. Blue light should be solid

You would use a D-sub connection to xlr or TRS, whichever your monitor takes. Or if you had an adat device you can use that. Just make sure to assign the main outs in studio one. Due to the lack of main outs on the 4848 I recommend getting a quantum or quantum 2 for monitor control capability and using the 4848 for additional I/O. Though you can connect the 4848 to monitors you won't have any control over the volume outside of studio one

The 4848 sounds fine me. It's basically a digital patch bay for all my analog gear.

Which did you get. I have the option for either one. I prefer Orion

I have had 0 issues with it. I was in a studio this past weekend and they have a 24 channel trident console connected to a 4848

Yes it works as a stand alone in pro tools. I forgot pro tools was capped at 32 channels. All 48 show in pro tools (32 analog and 16 adat)

Let me know what you think. I like that the 32+ has main outs. That way your not using two outputs from your 32 like the Orion 32

I only use mine to patch analog gear but I don't see any indication that it's offline when I close studio one. So I think that information is false.
