  • This video I discuss how the Orion 32 compares to the Quantum 4848 in my opinion. I have recently sold my Orion 32 and replaced it with the Quantum, 4848.

    I just saw someone do a head to head between a Quantum 4848 and a UA X16 interface. If any at all, there wasn’t much difference as far as converter quality goes (The UA has fewer IO, but has plugins, and DSP, but I don’t know if that’s worth the extra $3,000).

    Czar, what is your opinion sound wise between an orion 32, apollo 16x, lynx 16n, or a RME converter ?

    Longtime subscriber here. I've learned a lot watching your production vids - thanks! I have a question about the newer Presonus interfaces. I'm curious if their lack of line inputs is an issue with connecting outboard mic pres. The standard thinking on this used to be that you wanted to avoid plugging XLR outputs into Neutrik inputs because they didn't completely bypass the mic-pre circuit. Some manufacturers advised turning gain all the way down and that "supposedly" bypassed the circuit, but the argument was debated quite a lot on the forums. For that reason, users with a lot of outboard gear generally stuck with interfaces that had line inputs... I haven't kept up, maybe the newer stuff is designed differently (or the Neutrik controversy has been proven to be unfounded)...? I see you have an API lunchbox, so you are probably getting around the analog connectivity "issue", but what would you do to connect an older mic pre? Bottom line: Does a TRS cable plugged into a Neutrik jack really allow bypass of the mic pre circuit?

      @TheAudioCzar  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would need to check the manual to be sure it does but to my knowledge most audio interfaces bypass the pres. This is from the Presonus Quamtum manual.
      When an XLR is connected, the signal is routed to the preamp.
      When a TRS is connected, the preamp is bypassed and the input signal is sent directly
      to the ADC. When nothing is connected, Channels 1 and 2 on Quantum will default
      to line inputs, Channel 3-8 will default to mic

    Hi. Thank you for overview. I like philosophy of Quantum 4848: to use DAW mainly as a recorder/player of line level signal and let the availability of semi-analgue regime.
    I have few questions related to Quantum 4848 and Studio One:
    1) Is it possible to change color of levelmeter LEDs on front panel of Quantum 4848? I think it is green-yellow-red. I am colorblind and these are the same for me :(. I saw on some digital mixer (don't remember the brand nor model), that color of metering/peaking LEDs could be changed for example to blue-white-red. That combination could be perfect for my eyes.. Is it possible also here?
    2) Will this unit work with Intel NUC (Thunderbolt version of course) and Windows 7? Or Windows 10 (and later) is needed?
    3) Does it really work out 32 channels in and 32 channels out simultaneously at the same time at 192kHz/24bits each?
    3) Is it possible to control Studio One through web browser and local network (thin client)? At least project file management and basic recording functions like start/stop recording, arming tracks, punching in/out, using marks, display of record time?
    Thank you in advance for any reply :) Keep on rockin in the free world :)

    I was thinking about the 4848 but I noticed that it was discontinued and I saw some people with connection problems in universal control. Do you have experienced any issue with the 4848?
    People in presonus FAQ are having problems with Apple M1 processors, and the company don’t answer anything about it…

    Have you looked into aftermarket mods available through black lion audio? It might narrow any quality issues between the two. I think Black Lion Audio can mod it for about $500, but going by their website, the quantum has pretty good sound to start with.

      @1KMPLX 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheAudioCzar you could get one of your quantum’s modded to test if you can hear the difference (Instead of sending them both in at the same time). But I get it; it would suck to spend the money for nothing. After all, there’s perfectly good 500 series gear you could get with that money. lol

    I bought and tested the Quantum 2626 from Presonus. I'm sorry to say that I'm sending it back to the seller because the sound reproduction is bad. Too many high frequencies, blurred, indistinct bass.
    My Antelope Discrete4 Thunderbolt3 sound card beats it to the punch. Bass is present and clarity is not aggressive in the high frequencies.
    The quantum's pseudo routing software is an aberration or a bad joke.
    I could not mix with this equipment.
    I understand your decision on the external hardware but not on the sound reproduction.
    Thanks for the review.

    What is your experience with latency on the orion? I use firewire still but run into audio artifacts on large projects(32+ tracks) despite having a really powerful computer(i7, 32gb ram, editing on ssd, etc.) so overdubbing with vsts on other tracks tends to cause problems. Since I am completely ITB it makes it difficult when I need midi drums and guitar emulation running while tracking.
