    These are the role models that the black community needs. It's good that there are all these successful black men and women in sports and entertainment but we need more black people pursuing academic opportunities and excelling in institutions of higher learning.

    His story is very inspirational and good for him! It's important to point out that he went to a private school from k-12, he had the opportunity to grow and had those resources such as books and modern technology. Sure, he put in the hard work and earned it, but he was lucky to have the opportunity that some kids never get. Hard work is part of the equation and so is exposure to opportunities that make greatness more achievable.

      and he took advantage of that from a scholarship he was given (probably from earning it) and then maintained that scholarship in that private school. He did all that extracurricular activities and maintained straight A's. Many with the same resources aren't able to do well like him. He understood what he had to do. There should be nothing critical about this.

    This is amazing ! My family and I ran into big problems, we were sometimes almost homeless. Worried our cells are gonna be turned off, worried about food and clothes. My brother served 8 years then went to Harvard, got his dream job and salary. Then my sister got accepted to Stanford and got her dream job and salary as well. Right now my siblings have everything they want with their kids and wife and husband. I finished Highschool and got accepted to Stanford as well. I have 1 more year left so we are so blessed and happy for the life god has gave us. We support our parents still. (My brother is a doctor, and my sis is also a doctor. And I’m studying to be a doctor.)

    I noticed the same thing. As a parent with a student who has a partial scholarship and a prepaid plan, she still had to take off a semester because of expenses. Harvard is not easy to get into. It was very disappointing to see the reward that was given to him. I am quite sure he and his mother were not looking for a handout but an ugly bike and a plane ticket was insulting for lack of a better word. How can you possibly think that will help him. (It will help him not get a date.) Lol A bike and plane ticket? His mother could have done that. Giving a check to help with meals, which lots of kids in college kids suffer from lack thereof or books, pencils, a lap top. (A basket of supplies with all or a gift card for $500 at least.) Lol Basic living expenses. I am not sorry for the rant... But, in the same segment Chick-fil-A gave a check for $25,000. (A great donation!) GMA could not find a sponsor for him? Their faces were like, really? This young man has beaten so many odds to get where he is today. I love his story just hate the lack of consideration for his accomplishments. Js

      Supposedly, Harvard and all the Ivies, meet all of a student's demonstrated financial need. If mom's a school teacher, he's probably got all expenses covered. That includes books, computers.....
      Giving him a car might seem nice but many universities don't allow freshman to have a car on campus. I don't know about Cambridge, but Boston has horrible parking. Plus it snows there. I doubt he's ever driven in the snow living in Compton?

      Ivy league institutions are wonderful in financial aid. My 72,000 cost was broken up into 1300 per semester for a 2600 total. My family couldn't cover it and despite having bad credit, we got a 1000 dollar loan for 3.7% interest. My public state school prior to transfer required loans, private, and my interest was 11%. Ivy takes care of their own.

    He accomplished this not because he is black or because of God. He made it this far due to having a strong motivation to want to move forward, he saw an opportunity of a life time and he took it. Stop giving credit to his race or God this young man strived relentlessly and achieved what many fail to achieve as they have depended solely on the latter to move them forward. Anybody who said he did it because of his race or God should be ashamed there are young kids reading these comments and you all know dam well at the end of the day it all comes down to studying. Peace...

      Lita A, Giving him a car might create more issues than it's worth. He'd have to drive it from Compton to Cambridge, as in, 3 days if you're going alone. He's probably never driven in the snow or ice. MA gets a lot of both. Believe it or not, a bicycle is a very practical gift for a college student.

    • @ViFabulous
      @ViFabulous 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Acid Plug So let me just explain why I think that’s wrong.
      Let’s say, your parents had you when they were young. They didn’t go to college or university and worked jobs that didn’t pay that good. They bought a home in a rough neighborhood because that was the only place the could afford.
      While you grew up your parents always worked, no one was there to take care of you. You had to find things to occupy yourself while they weren’t home. You make some friends at school, you aren’t the best student though- always talking and never listening. You don’t really care about school because the teachers don’t even care. Why should they? It’s not like they even like their jobs..
      Eventually your friends get into drugs. And eventually you do too. It takes you away from everything at home. Every other day some fight happens in our neighborhood.
      When your finally an adult your dad grows sick. Instead of attending college you decided to start working. The job doesn’t pay well but you have too. If you don’t.. your mother, father, all of you may end up on the street. And the streets are dangerous- so you decided the best thing to do is work.
      Eventually you meet this really nice girl. When you finally become romantic she ends up getting pregnant. You guys were never taught sex Ed and you never were taught how to avoid unwanted pregnancies.
      So now you have a baby to raise. Eventually your mom dies, so does your father. You work each day only to come up short when trying to pay for food for your wife, your baby.. You decided theft is the best course of action. As long as you don’t get caught.. right?
      So you start pick pocketing wallets, then you start stealing from the gas station.. until you get caught.. You were only trying to feed your family... right? You aren’t a bad person..but everyone else thinks you are. So you go to jail.
      Your daughter grows up only knowing her father through a glass screen. She grows up without you. That’s even harder on her mother though. She works twice as hard to provide now but it isn’t enough.
      Her daughter grows up trying to not make the same mistakes but she can’t avoid them. How can she focus on school when she has to work to keep her mother and herself off the streets. Eventually she does end up going to college.. but only to be stuck in the same city with no opportunity’s to show her worth.
      The cycle repeats
      This happens all the time all over the world. Sometimes your just born in poverty. Sometimes it takes fighting like hell for generations just to get out of that hole but sometimes that never happens.

    Congratulations for getting into Harvard but it should be a norm rather than the exception. It's sad that it makes national TV when a black man enters Harvard university like it's some kind of super natural event. If only black people reject the stereotypes that are created by the media to keep us down, and strive towards education and perfection in character, there is nothing that we couldn't achieve.

    He also went to a private high school on a scholarship, which would boost his resume. It’s not like he went to the public high school in Compton. I personally don’t think this student was accepted because of affirmative action, though a lot of the times that is the reason why

    • @LS-wh9rn
      @LS-wh9rn 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hanlin Wang wrong; there’s no quotas under federal law....research! The only affirmative action is the legacy admits like Kushner, Trump, Bush and their imbecilic ilk; if whites had to compete openly, with Iranians, Asians, Nigerians, they’d never go to school. 😑

      In addition to having the exceptional grades, test scores, and extracurriculars, in order to get into this school, you need to be seen as someone who has done something that sets you apart from the millions of kids that apply. Harvard doesn't accept nobodies.
