Dallin Oaks said the church spends an average of $40 million per year in charity and welfare. That's a very small proportion of the $14 billion in church revenue. Why does the church hoard so many billions of dollars?

This is one of those topics where anything I say will probably upset people; however this is not my intent. I am not a CPA or anything so I reserve the right to be 100% wrong. Having said this, I do think think the Church broke any laws in this instance but it just does not look right from ethical or moral authority point of view. Once again, I really am not trying to offend anyone. The root cause to 99.99% of any of the challenges the Church now faces it lack of transparency. Because of this, issues/questions/concerns/etc. associate with topics such as worthiness interviews, history, and finances are just exacerbated due to a lack of transparency. In addition, there is no way the Church can deny past conference talks instructing members to pay tithe first even if they do not have money for food or rent they should tithe first contradicts the message of frugality - in other words, perhaps in today's world paying tithe should be the very last thing to pay - only after bills, savings, retirement, medical, and education. The problem is that the well documented history if "tithe first tithe being a factor in temple recommends coupled with what appears to be an investment account valued at $100 Billion (keep in mind other assets such as ranches, farms, real estate, etc. have not been factored in) really has horrible optics - all of this could me minimized by realizing the only way to operate going forward is 100% transparency . To do otherwise, creates problems where there are none, and where there are problems.challenges, these will go to level "11" due to the lack of transparency - it just creates a lot of mistrust....I say this with peace & love - please LDS Church PR department - just start opening up ad laying everything on the table - enough of the secrecy

I hope every saints too will follow the church example. To manage their finances properly, set a budget and save for the rainy seasons.

"We invest the money so it will grow." Yes, you invest in shopping malls and insurance companies owned by...the Church. As for "having a reserve for a rainy day", absolutely, no one would begrudge ANY organization for doing that, but when your "rainy day fund" is SIXTEEN TIMES your annual budget, and so large that the Church could literally function just off the interest of the fund, like an endowment (monetary kind, not temple kind), without collecting one more dollar from the members, it does raise eyebrows.

I am grateful for the principles my parents and the Church of Jesus Christ have taught me to live within my means and to save a portion of my income for future needs. It has truly been a blessing in my life.

Far as I know, and I was a Bishop for 9 years, the Church is sooo extra careful in the wise use of sacred sacrificed money offerings from us, members of the church, the finances in every ward & branch all over the world are checked through audits every semester, plus the weekly report each unit does on Sunday, and that's mandatory... when a unit doesn't report the weekly happenings on Sunday, that very day the Stake President asks the reason why, and they have until the next day to do so... I testify of the previous, earnestly, in the name of Our Lord and Savior, Jesuschrist's... amen.

I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was grateful and amazed on how they managed finances and help many people around the world at the same time. Truly the hands of the Lord is with His people...

Most organizations religious or otherwise have investments. The WP story is just a cheap bit of sensationalism. And I am a non Mormon.

To not use at minimum the interest on the 100 billion in the reserve of the reserve yes the second reserve. The LDS church pays if I clean drinking water for the entire planet with two years of interest!!! By not doing so is evil!!!

There's being fiscally responsible and then there's not using the money for what you told members it was intended. Supporting the City Creek mall and Beneficial Life as the ONLY things underwritten by your 100 billion dollar fund leads me to ask "What does God need with a Starship?"

Purdence and fiscal responsibility is a great trait. We should ask each organization in the world to be so wise.

We do not tithe and inquire to know where that money go. That’s not even my money. That is the Lord’s money. It’s hard to process this when you haven’t experience the blessings that paying tithing brings.

That's great! Just don't ask us to pay another $100 per month for missionaries when there are billions stockpiled. Thank you!

Boy I i gotta thank that "whistleblower" for letting me know how great our church is with money. How someone could see this in a bad light is only indicative of the mentality and morally bankrupt society we live in. We aren't in debt but are actually incredibly wealthy! And unlike every other christian church in america our membership and attendance isn't on a sharp decline but is holding steady and slowing but surely growing! This is surely the Lord's church!

I love the Lord, I love the Gospel, and I have no doubt these sacred funds are being managed in the most appropriate way.
