DEADLIEST TORNADO of 2024 (so far through Sep. 12)
During the active storm season of 2024, incredible tornadoes seemed to be making daily headlines. Despite the high tornado count, the death toll has been surprisingly low. Of the 1600 tornadoes counted (so far) this year, only 44 deaths have been reported. Perhaps a testament to our warning system, and luck. The deadliest tornado this year was an EF3 that tracked between Valley View TX and Sanger TX at night on May 25th. Manufactured and mobile homes were heavily damaging or demolishing and seven lives were lost.
    THE TRISTATE TORNADO of 1925
On Wednesday, March 18, 1925 a highly visible funnel appeared under a classic supercell thunderstorm at 1pm near Moore Township, Missouri. Shortly after the deadliest tornado in US history would claim its first life. Town after leveled town would endure a horror unlike anything America had ever seen. After crossing into Illinois, the parent storm transitioned to a high precipitation mode obscuring the intense tornado behind a curtain of rain while the strength and size of the tornado increased. With wind estimates perhaps in excess of 300 mph, the tornado obliterated the numerous towns directly in its path while racing across the landscape at an average speed of 62 mph. Entire rows of homes were leveled and swept away. Schools were devastated. Railroad tracks were reportedly ripped from the ground and sheets of iron were carried as far as 50 miles away. In rural areas, farmhouses were also leveled. Trees were debarked and the tornado carved deep scours into the earth Indicating this tornado would have easily earned the highest intensity rating on today’s enhanced Fujita scale, an EF5.
Between The obliterated town of Gorham and the highly devastated town of Murphysboro, the mile-wide tornado sprinted to an incredible speed of 73 mph and for a long-time it was recognized as the fastest tornado ever recorded. In its wake, large fires burned structures with trapped victims inside. Thousands were left without shelter or food and looters raided the rubble. After 3 hours and 38 minutes of unspeakable horror, the tornado, or family of tornadoes, finally dissipated at 4:38 PM near Petersburg Indiana. Along a 235 mile damage path, approximately 15,000 homes had been destroyed, and 695 men, woman and children lost their lives. By far the largest death toll registered by any US tornado to the present day.
THE DEADLIEST TORNDO IN THE WORLD
On April 26th, 1989 a large powerful tornado tracked through Bangladesh. According to the World Meteorological Organization this tornado killed roughly 1,300 people and injured 12,000. According to the Bangladesh Observer, "The devastation was so complete,
that barring some skeletons of trees, there were no signs of standing infrastructures.”
TOP 10 DEADLIEST TORNADOES EVER RECORDED
Bangladesh is no stranger to terrible tornadoes. In fact six historic tornadoes occurring in Bangladesh are contenders for the Top 10 deadliest tornadoes ever recorded. The United States has only two on that list.
    TORNADOES IN BANGLADESH
It's not that Bangladesh has bigger, badder tornadoes than the US. Oklahoma is roughly the same size of Bangladesh and has significantly more tornadoes. But Oklahoma has population of 4 million while Bangladesh has a population of 174 million. If a big bad tornado occurs, It would be much more likely to hit a heavily populated area in Bangladesh than in the US.
    BANGLADESH VULNERABLE TO TORNADOES
The dense population, absence of a sophisticated warning system and lack of tornado shelter able to withstand destructive winds make Bangladesh highly vulnerable to any tornadoes that occur and thus the deadliest location in the world regarding tornado related fatalities.

@@ldcraig2006 Hello and thank you for your kind words. 🙏
The reported severe weather incidents with mass casualties occurred between the early 70s and late 80s, during a time when Bangladesh was devastated and still recovering from the aftermath of our gruesome 1971 war for independence. Our warning systems, civilian infrastructure and storm shelters were not adequate at that time to prevent such tragedies. Today, Bangladesh is fully equipped, comparable to advanced countries like the U.S. in managing severe weather. To provide some insight to your question, I can cite an example of how we handled "Cyclone Remal" recently in 2024, which became crowned as the costliest known tropical cyclone in our history.
Tropical cyclones, particularly during cyclone season from May-April, are the most detrimental events and cause the most damage due to our geographical location. The U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) began tracking the cyclonic circulation system in the Bay of Bengal on 21st May 2024, and by 24th May, issued a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert (TCFA). On 26th May, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) issued an advance distress signal code 10 for coastal districts. Around 8,000-9,000 shelters were readied and stocked in the nearby areas to house 800,000 evacuated people, and operations at Chittagong's largest sea port were suspended. The army, fire service, volunteers, and other government institutions were ready for post-storm rescue. Although the cyclone claimed 19 lives, nearly a million people were effectively evacuated to safety.
Bangladesh has come a long way in building resilience against natural disasters, and while challenges remain, we continue to improve our response and preparedness to protect the people.

Bangladesh also has a tragic history of intense, super deadly cyclone/hurricanes. It is estimated that the Bhola Cyclone in 1970 killed over 500,000 people. 😔
Sadly, I think even with shelters and warnings, they would have a higher death toll per tornado simply because of the crazy population density and relatively poor construction. But yea, they gotta get some warning systems and shelters all the same! (I'm actually not sure how much that has or has not happened in recent years).

    • @butterflytigress1985
      @butterflytigress1985 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Unfortunately a big part of the problem Bangladesh has is not only the dense population but the fact that a good bit of said dense population lives in poverty. They can't afford to make well-built homes or shelters so they cobble together whatever they can with what little they have. It's less that all the tornadoes there are terrifyingly bad and more that a lot of people live in the equivalent of a US trailer park in the 1960s. No shelters, no warnings, nowhere to run. I can't imagine the absolute chaos and horror these storms cause when they occur.

From what I've heard from another weather youtube video, the main reason it was as deadly as it was was because at the time Bangladesh was still a part of Pakistan, and the Pakistani leader felt they wouldn't vote for him so he made sure no warning was issued so that the cyclone would get rid of them, thus securing his win in the election (he lost because it was found out what he did, but he decided to stay in power anyway)

Main reason of tornado in Bangladesh are so deadly because people in Bangladesh don't even know Bangladesh got tornadoes. And most time they occurs in rural but densely populated areas. That's why should give more warning and knowledge to people there about tornadoes.

From India . All I can say is , unlike in the US , there are no guaranteed seasonal patterns of Tornadoes here , unlike Cyclones ( Pre Monsoon cyclone season in May & Post Monsoon Cyclone season from October till December , with occasionally one or two strong cyclones in Arabian sea during monsoon season ) . Compared that to Tornado , they are like One or Two confirmed Tornadoes in Indian subcontinent alone anually . Maybe 5 or 6 if the local weather is strong .

I recently learned of how devastating tornadoes are in Bangladesh from watching Carly WX. However, I had no idea _that many_ human beings had been killed in that time frame there. And as Carly correctly reminds everyone, it isn’t _just_ the deaths, but the horrific, life-long injuries the survivors suffer that matters.
Thank you for also bringing further attention to this, Hank.

Oh wow, it seems that particular problem is happening to so many countries lately :( legal or illegal? I can't imagine wanting to go to Bangladesh. It says a lot that the government has either never cared to mandate that its population have better buildings and better defenses against these devastating tornados...either never cared to do it, or been financially unable to do it. The houses aren't built with tornado basement shelters - how hard can it be to dig out a basement if you're building even a low-quality basic house? Maybe I'm just too privileged here in America, used to houses with plenty of building codes and regulations involved in their construction; to understand how badly off they are...I don't know.
