  • We visit another hot spot of railroading in Southern California: San Bernardino. BNSF, Union Pacific, and Metrolink commuter trains make their appearance in this video and some really interesting engines as well: A Santa Fe GP60 still in Warbonnet paint scheme, a brand new BNSF GP25XE and two UPY Gensets. Enjoy! This is the 12th video in the "Expedition to SoCal" series. The complete playlist can be found here: • [6q][4k] Fighting the ... .

    Wow this San Bernardino yard is huge, just like the trains which runs through there. I guess the CP locomotive on the last train was a surprise for you. I love the midtrain helper there. Very good video again, it's good to see you still have footage from your California vacation.

      Yes, the CP came a little bit unexpected that far south, but it was good to see some other color. Thanks! There will be one more video from this trip.

      There are yards in the area between San Bernardino and L.A. downtown. I'd think the train was headed to one of them. You're welcome!

    Excellent footage mbmars01! The SBD sub for the most part doesn't disappoint with traffic! I am wondering if security tried to kick ya guys off the station? Happened to me and my friend in the past!

      Thank you! Ah okay, no I wasn't harassed by anyone. I was expecting to be ID checked, but nothing happened. They let me alone there for the two hours I spent.

    Ah summer days. Cloudless skies and warm sunshine. What were the two unusual loco,s, obviously being transferred, behind the main power in the beginning of the video? Goes without saying great video.Mick🇬🇧

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      But don't forget that California has to pay for dry weather like this: Wildfires like the huge ones right now are always a great threat. The "unusual" locos are gensets. For fuel saving purposes (and reducing emissions), these engine have several small diesel engines in them and only as many as needed to do work are actually used. They were considered good options as yard switchers, but it doesn't look like the concept was particularly successful.

    • @mickboakes7023
      @mickboakes7023 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the info hence the three exhausts. I do appreciate what you say about the price paid for hot dry weather. It’s just looking out of the window seeing day after day of wet miserable weather, a bit of sunshine seems a good option . Guess it’s another case of the other mans grass is always greener. Keep safe. Mick🇬🇧

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, I fully understand it, but looking out of the window and never seeing a cloud in several weeks can also make one wonder what's wrong with the weather. A healthy mix would be the optimum, of course.

      Well, yes and no. A lot of action happens mostly on a few main arteries, but there are also large areas without rails.

      The BNSF coal trains from/to Plant Scherer in Juliette, GA have typically a 2+2 configuration and run on NS.

    What is the longest train you ever filmed? Another grait and awesome video.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't normally count cars, so I don't actually know. The westbound BNSF grain trains on the Southern Transcon with 9 engines and some intermodals with more than 12k feet length are certainly among the longest, and so is certainly also the empty coal hopper train I recently saw here on CSX with 220 cars. In the past, when CSX Q616 and Q676 still ran through here, they also had easily 170-200 cars. Thanks, good you like the video.

    You did well on your short trip, have any problems with security since your standing on the platform without a Metrolink ticket?

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, surprisingly there were no issues during the entire trip at all. Not a single incident. I didn't really figure it out, because I was more interested in the freight trains, but I think I stood on the Amtrak platform? I have forgotten the details, but there was no barrier or anything to prevent me from getting on that platform. I also guess, I'm not the first railfan to watch trains there. They might simply be used to it.

      I did! In the "Specials and Railfanning Expeditions" section on my channel main page, there's a link to the "Third Expedition to the Deep South" playlist from earlier this year. It contains a lot of KCS stuff from along the KCS/NS Speedway.

    Those 3GS locos are such mechanical failures. All gensets are. So glad most of them have been removed from service
