Janis Joplin never considered joining the Elevators nor would they have wanted her. But it is certainly true that when she joined Big Brother, she did her best Roky Erickson imitation on the heavier songs. She had started out in an Austin folk trio, by the way, with Powell St. John who was the first writer of original songs for The Elevators. That was before she had borrowed Roky's singing style.
"Bull of the Woods" is my favorite Elevator's album. It's been my fave since I first heard in '82. It's the dark sound you mentioned. I have an article that's a brief history of the Elevators which likens "Bull" to the Hindu "Kali Yuga", which is the final age for the dissolution of the universe. The "universe" in this case being the Elevators themselves. I gotta admit I didn't know Leatherman played on "Bull".
It's a killer LP. Love from a Scottish Elevator fan living in Valencia. And if you don't know.. There is a wild Stacey interview where he mentions whilst on acid, a cop was gonna' take him to the state line and end him.. He also mentions premonitions regarding his own death.
This is my favorite Elevators album. It is a bit darker, but the recording captures the chaos going on in that moment. Stacy Sutherland deserves more credit than he gets.
There was a club called The Vulcan where they played in the early Austin scene. Cops basically closed it down and the new place to go was The Armadillo that opened in 70. Look up Dirt Road to Psychedelia for the early scene in Austin. Austin sucks now but it was a beautiful place back then.
I met a guy in Los Angeles who was from Texas, had been friends with Mike Nesmith and been in an extra on some Monkees episodes thanks to that connection. He was a 13th Floor Elevators fan. He'd been back and forth - Tex to Cal. I remember him talking about how horrible Austin had become. That was in 1981.
Respectfully submitted; There are a few questionable comments made here, but just to address some errors that should be pointed too... #2 Tommy Hall, Stacy Sutherland, Danny Thomas were not the only 3 members on 7 cuts on Bull of The Woods. A little of the record was recorded in early 1968, but not all of it. Most of the Stacy written songs were recorded in the Summer of '68. #3 Ronnie Leatherman was not the band's original bass player, that was Bennie Thurman. Editing/correcting my own comment... BENNY.
Oh wow! I bet that was a surprise. Assuming by inheritance, it means he passed recently, and I’m sorry to hear that. Thanks for sharing and checking out the vid! It’s definitely a classic LP!
The album Psychedelic Moods came out about the same time as the 1st 13th Floor Elevators debut. I believe Psychedelic Moods may have been released a week or two before.

I have an old paper promotion stating the Elevators were from New York.
I inherited my father’s collection and just found an original pressing of Easter everywhere.
