Even regular fruit here tastes good. Better than almost all fruit I've had in America good. I can't imagine what the expensive version here tastes like!
Everything here in America now has preservatives and aren't natural anymore. All the fruits are picked too soon and cold storage. Farmers market is the best way to go.

i never understood why people take the peel off of some fruits, so much extra work and it still taste yummy with it on!
amen to that, all the riboflavins that are good for your heart and blood in apples are in the skin it annoys me when i see on most korean shows people cutting off the skin, i mean i get pesticides but just wash them? you reckon they dont have peelers in korea like why do they always peel with knives?
Uhg, I always take the peel off. I don't like the texture compared to the inside. + somehow I'd rather have the inside than the peel that's probably been sprayed with pesticides, been dropped on the ground etc. (I wouldn't care about it if the outside tasted the same as the inside)
Because fruit skins are full of chemicals. Personally I'm so lazy that I don't often peel my fruit but I feel bad knowing how unhealty it is.
in this case it may have been to prevent them from knowing which is which, since the fruits had unique colours. the cheap apple had a lighter color to it and didn't have a bruise. the expensive pear was a bit bigger. they wanted this to be a true blind test.
for me, the fruit peel always gets stuck between my teeth in a really painful way so I prefer to peel it off to avoid unecessary pain :

my country doesn't have special gift fruits, although korean pears are pretty expensive here, the only things i can think off that are somewhat expensive are cold strawberries cherries and rasberries (12 guilders for about 100grams) but thats because we import them cuz my country is very hot, and real vanilla beans are also MEGA expensive and you can only get them at gourmet stores or very rarely at the biggest supermarkets
Surprised you peeled the pear and apple - i thought there were a lot of nutrients are. I know some talk about pesticides - but if you wash it and its still there, if its in the peel then its in the rest of the apple too. You're not really avoiding anything
Australia doesn't have "gift fruit" I guess what we consider gourmet is the fresh fruit that's super expensive like dragon fruit and lychee fruit?
There is no special - over priced fruit in the USA that I'm aware of. There are vendors that send gift baskets and arrangements that are more expensive then if you just did it yourself. There is this company 'Edible Arrangements" that cuts pineapples and apples and strawberries and make it look like a flower arrangement. Sometimes the dip some of the fruit in chocolate

Did u guise know that in Chinese culture it's good luck for ur fruit to mold. Because in chinese language 发霉(mold) and 发财(prosper/be rich) both have a word in common(发). Many chinese office workers put molding fruits in their offices in hopes to prosper in the year(发财)

lol my dad bought a $17 pear once because he lost his glasses and thought it was $1.7 I think it was the same as that pear in the video. Huge and sweet. Then he got addicted and keep buying the pears which drives me crazy. Feels like such a waste.

I live in germany and you get about six apples for about 2€ and I'm croatian and in croatia it's even cheaper, u get that much for even 40cent to 1€ (and they don't taste like chemicals lol)
In poland you can buy 4 kilograms of apples for the same price.
I'm pretty sure the apples in here are expensive because it's winter here. The apples are not in season. They are usually sold at pretty reasonable price when in season.
I live in the US, in Minnesota to be exact, and truthfully, fruit is really bland here. If you want fruit that is even remotely tasty you have to get it at it's very peak and even then it's a hit or miss. When I went to Jamaica for two weeks we had fresh fruit picked for us every morning and oh my goodness... I will never be able to eat American pineapple, banana, or mango without feeling immense sadness ever again! The fruit in Jamaica was paler but tasted like magic, it was so sweet!
actually, everything in Jamaica tasted better, even their pop (soda) because it is illegal to use preservatives in their food there!

That's how I felt after living in Germany for a year and eating so much tasty German fruit and then going back to America and being like "why is our fruit so dissapointing?" Eating German strawberries were like eating candies, and eating American strawberries is like eating slightly strawberry flavored water. >.
My dog/best friend passed away yesterday. Worst day of my life. For 14 years she was my best friend and I'm especially having a rough time thinking how she's not here with me physically. Rewatching this video, and I had to pause before it even started to go grab an apple. I gotta say, eating it and watching this at the same time was pretty satisfying. Something about it made my apple taste a million times better lol

I love Korean pears. I work at a grocery store and they sell them for between 2 and 3 dollars. I've always loved the flavor of pears but hated that super gritty texture, so when I discovered these and their apply crispness I was thrilled. I would love to try one that isn't, you know, imported. (Local fruit is so much better. Sadness for the lack of Korean pears or persimmons growing in the Midwest.)

Lunay LeZarde I believe most Korean moms will say because of pesticides. I know because my mom tells me every time I pick up an apple to wash it, wash it with vinegar water, and then peel it. I do... one of those things loosely. (wash it)

Okay, no joke, Korean pears are my favorite things in the world, becuase they're huge, and so effing juicy. They're kinda expensive where I live (Oklahoma) but THEY ARE SO WORTH IT. I STEAL THEM FROM MY GRANDPARENTS ALL THE TIME (But don't tell my gramps, becuase he's always like "Where'd all the fruit go?" Yes. Produce is stupid expensive here. Eating out is cheap, but grocery shopping is hell.

MegaFreakgirl Not that weird, given the size of South Korea and that most of it is urbanized. There's just no place to grow fruits and veggies, so they have to be imported.
yeah...I was about to say that 2.50 per pear is not cheap at all...that sounds more like per kg price to me...I have heard fresh fruit, veges and meat is really expensive in korea and japan. it really shocked me when I saw on a japanese TV show that 1 serving of beef costs around 80 dollars...thats like how much i spend over a week or more...

In Israel, they sell the really cheap and tasteless fruits to us, and all the good, rich fruits that grow in the north get imported to Russia and Europe and sold for like 10$ each :( You can really taste the difference, the fruits from the north are x10 sweeter and have a more complex texture than the regular junk.

In Sweden there is no such thing as a special, more expensive fruit... I think? ^^ Maybe we have these Granny Smith red apples that is a bit shinier and more prettier than the usual apples... But I wish I could taste the korean pear! The pears in Sweden looks kind of different, they are more egg-shaped.
granny smith are green apples from australia :) you might be thinking of red delicious but perhaps royal gala or pink lady?, they are quite common red apples here in aus. also sweden's awesome btw :3

OMG you guess should try some of the fruits here in Brazil. Some like mangos and bananas and strawberry are imported, but we have like at least 60 different native fruits that are so weird with a wide range of flavor. Like seriously, Brazil is definitely one of the countries with the most fruit varieties, the king of fruits!

It's all down to the apple variety though. A Braeburn would taste completely different to a Pink Lady for example.
Interestingly, Korea doesn't do apple variety. When I visit Canada I go to the grocery store and see shelves of apples ranging from Pink Lady, Honeycrisp, Fuiji, Granny Smith....Korea has: "Here is bag of reddish green apples. You want different apple? Okay these reddish green apples are smaller and cheaper." That's it!
Thankfully I'm from Washington where most stores carry multiple varieties of apples. Sometimes its a true dilemma choosing one out of the many present.

Or maybe just like most of the produce apples were also introduced by Japan as well. I don't know about Canada, but on the East Coast in the U.S., gift fruit is available through mail-order catalogs. The catalogs tend to revolve around citrus fruits, since many are based in Florida. You can get the typical Western-style gift baskets with fruit, nuts, pastries, and candies, but you can also get a little ribbon-tied gift box with a couple of perfect, giant oranges, grapefruit, pears, or even specialty cross-breeds like Honeybells.

Today I purchased something called a Korean Singo Fruit from an Asian market. They were giving out samples & I thought it was really good (sweet & juicy) so I bought one. It taste like a cross between a really great pear & apple. I looked pretty much like the pear you guys had on your video (super huge) & it was pretty pricey ($4.00) which is still high for one piece of fruit. I wouldn't spend $12.00 for it but it I would definitely treat myself again to one occasionally for $4.00. Sort of like my once in a blue moon pomegranate.
i'm not sure what pears you have in canada but in aus i've always had nice juicy fresh green pears, unless your talking about brown pears that for some reason are always in paintings even though they taste like poo are belong no where near edible fruit.
I never ate a brown pear that I liked. They're all so...gritty.

I've never tried expensive fruit versus cheap fruit in the US, but I do say that fruit from the farmer's market or one of those "pick it yourself" type of farms is SO much better. They might not be as big, but the taste is better.

I don't know if it's gourmet or not, but once I went strawberry picking during my vacation in South Korean.. Their strawberries taste soo sweet! way better than those big strawberries that we get from the groceries in Canada. At that time It's not even the season for strawberries! imagine how it taste like when its the time. Yum~

Hey Martina and Simon, im currently 6 months pregnant, I live in the U.S and being pregnant you have to change your eating habits, Your not suppose to eat, rare fish, rare or runny eggs, and can only eat fully cooked meat, and nuts are not recommend bc it can cause nut allergens, and taken Prenatal vitamins, i know you did a thing of pregnancy but does a woman's eating habits need to change when she is pregnant?
I'm also 6 months pregnant, I know your not to eat raw anything, but I eat nuts and I'm fine. This is my 2nd pregnancy and I eat what I want and I am fine. When your pregnant you eat what you crave, in th Asian culture if the women is craving something the husband has to get it for her, because its good for her and the baby. It's kind of like Superstition if the women doesn't eat what she craves it's not healthy for the baby. But eating certain things don't change how your baby will turn out.
And also, different counties have different superstitions, like they said if you eat the nice round, smooth one your baby will be good looking etc. but that just a saying and in South Korea they strive for good looking babies, kids, looks etc so they say that kind of stuff.
Ai Song In Mexico, there's a joke where if you dont get what you crave for during pregnancy, the baby's head'll come out shaped like that....
I have a sensitivity to nuts, so I stay away from them, I live in Kansas so fresh fish and meats are hard to find, I didn't know if different countries had different ways of being pregnant.
In america If you are carrying low, as your belly hangs down low, You most likely carrying a boy.
But if you carry high, to wear you have a high belly, its a girl.

Actually you're not supposed to eat fish at all except maybe like canned tuna (I'd ask a doctor) since fish carry enough mercury to cause birth defects in the baby.
I've had Korean pears before and they are delicious. They are definitely juicy and sweet. Haven't had those in awhile though and I want some now lol.
$2.50 for an apple is still freaking expensive!!! 1 good quality apple in the Philippines costs like 25 pesos or roughly 50cents!!! CENTS!!

I'm from New England, in the Fall all the local apple orchards sell tons of variety. The apples are definitely more expensive than a grocery store and are special because they are harvested in the Autumn. They are better quality. You can pick them yourself and be choosy or just go into the farm store and buy a bag and get cider and cider donuts. Cider donuts are the most amazing things on the planet!
How are the peaches in Korea? BECAUSE PEACHES ARE LIFE.
My sister went to Spain once, ate a peach, and said it was the most juiciest, succulent, ripe peach she had ever had. Here in the US unless peaches are in season they taste like dong. Pretty much like any other fruit. Except for bananas.

Peaches are not that popular in Korea. When they come around seasonally I've never really had a great one. They always seem hard and unable to ripen. Maybe they're all imported rather than grown here? I'll check more closely next time...

In Florida we have something that's called a jackfruit it is covered in spikes, weighs about 5-10 pounds, has huge seeds in it, only comes around 2-3 times a year and is a rare gift that is very welcome in most homes.
I was thinking, "is that Martina peeling the pear", but I swear North Americans never peel fruit with knives like that. Must have been Suzy.

I tried passion fruit the other day and I was super blown away by the taste. It might not be special to maybe some people but growing up I've only seen like...apples, oranges, bananas and peaches. Passion fruit has the taste of all of those fruits. It was amazing~

For 3$ you can get roughly 12 apples in Egypt ! Vegetables/Fruits are very cheap here :)

In Australia, we don't have expensive fruit but authentic vietnamese dishes that served at lunar new year are expensive. There are also flowers and gift packages you can buy.
In Singapore if I'm not mistaken, the gift fruit is pomelo. During CNY season, supermarkets are filled with pomelos.
My family got alphonso mangoes. They are really really pricey but it's really good & extremely huge.

I live in the U.S, Northern California to exact. Our fruit is pretty good here. I love going to pick my own cherries, grapes, oranges, apples and peaches. The quality of fruit changes depending on the season. Because when locally grown fruit is in season it can be great but during the off season when it's exported not so much.
Instead of comparing the cheap red strawberry to the special white strawberry in Japan, you would have had a much pleasant taste experience if you did this sort of difference price comparison on "normal fruits". The Japanese are fairly well known to put a lot of resources into getting top quality fruit, while growing the special ones for gifts (not eating).
I know that in the UK there's fruit gift baskets you can send to people. They usually cost around £20+ depending. It's not common but for weddings and birthdays people sometimes send them. Sending flowers is the more popular choice nowadays.

In the US a lot of people I know send Harry & David pears for Christmas gifts. They are grown in Oregon and are always REALLY tasty. Their standard pears come to about $3.32 USD, and their premium "cream of the crop" pears are $6.00 USD each. So even their most expensive pears are still half the price of those Lunar New Year ones.
I was so happy to find this video! I live in Bangkok, Thailand and there is fruit for the same expensive price here too for the new year.
My husband and I are moving to South Korea later this year so this is the stuff we need to know. :P lol

hi! So I know this video is super old but there is an expensive holiday fruit in the U.S. Harry and David sell pears that are very expensive but amazing. They don't have the grit the way regular pears do and they are super juicy. Thanks for another great video!
At Christmastime in the US, really a expensive box of pears were a gift that my father would sometimes receive from colleagues: it was kind of like a nicer version of a fruit basket. These pears were incredible, not so much in size, but in taste and texture- you had to hold a paper napkin right under your chin before you bit into it, because there was so much juice in the pear it would run all over your chin. But I don't know another time of year when we got the fancy pears.
I live in Los Angeles and in koreatown they definitely raise the fruit prices around New Years and korean thanksgiving and they do have gift fruit boxes that are more expensive. There was a korean pear set of 3 for around 6 dollars but I know that's nothing compared to koreas gift fruit. Normally the prices for fruit are really cheap so I'm so blessed. :D

I've worked at a peach farm in Japan for a while. We had to wrap every single peach into a paper bag, while it was still on a tree (to protect it from pests, rain, sunshine etc.). The farmer then sold them for about 10$ each.

In Hong Kong, the gift fruits were imported from Korea and Japan.
There's one here in the states called Harry and David who sells gift fruit (I think pears and apples). When you buy a box there's one pear that's gold leafed, they taste pretty good.
I imagine simon running back to grocery stores in disgust yelling "THIS FRUIT LACKS THE FLAVOUR OF ETERNAL YOUTH!!!!!" *flips table*
