- Before Formula 1 returns to Australia, Oracle Red Bull Racing travelled Down Under with our Championship-winning RB7 and New Zealand's Liam Lawson to set a lap with our partner @tagheuer around the iconic Mount Panorama Circuit, also known as Bathurst. The 6.2 kilometre circuit in New South Wales is home to the Bathurst 1000 Supercars race and the Bathurst 12 Hour and has been the location for some of motorsports' most iconic moments.

Liam is off to do a season of Super Formula in Japan. I hope to see him drive for Alpha Tauri next year because he's got the talent, he just needs to be given the opportunity.

This thing sounds incredible. I wish current F1 cars sounded like this. Too bad Liam didn't push at all on this lap, but boy was that sound fantastic.
He'd have been under very strict orders to not go beyond certain parameters! Still, I'll bet he had fun though :D

Imagine Max partnering Gizzy for _the_ race... A demonstration of extreme skill and, occasionally, insanity! In the best way, of course lol! I'm really picturing the total level of talent in that car. It would be mind blowing!
In the meantime, I don't think there's a petrolhead on the planet who wouldn't get goosebumps from just listening to that video, let alone a great deal of pleasure for that young lad getting the chance to take one of the best cars up and over one of (if not) _the_ greatest tracks anywhere. And I say this as a Brit - believe me, we have some pretty awesome tracks too!
Verstappen actually runs Bathurst a lot in simracing. So the idea of him actually racing there is not out of the question. Especially if he retires from F1 relatively early like he's always said he would do. It gives him the chance to race in other races around the world. He's clearly a big fan of it, to race around it virtually all of the time, and he takes simracing really seriously and not just as a hobby.
So yeah, Max in the Bathurst 1000, I really hope we get to see it one day. And it's pretty likely to actually happen. Fingers crossed.
Van Gisbergen is full time in the Nascar feeder/junior series now, and will end up in the top nascar series probably from next year onwards after using the 2024 season to train himself for it, cos he loved the races he's already raced there so far in the cup series (winning his first ever race in it, too, which is especially insane given the fact he'd never driven in a left hand drive car before that race), and so that's pretty exciting too. It's always the best thing when drivers from different series try different forms of motorsports like this, at least for me anyway. It's great to see how they adjust to the differences.
Gisbergen would definitely be interested in coming back and racing in the Bathurst 1000 again though I'm sure, especially if he could partner with someone like Max. Who better to help teach Max all the tricks and nuances of the track than him?
And yeah as a brit myself too, I wish more people here knew about Bathurst and how insane the races are there. It really is at minimum a top 3 race in the world. But here it seems like people watch the F1 and nothing else, or at best maybe British touring cars. It's hard to convince other brits to watch other motorsports series. It's either that they're into F1 only & refuse to watch anything else, or they're already into every kind of motorsports there is and so don't need any convincing anyway as they already watch things like Bathurst and Nascar and Indycar and Le Mans etc, and there's no in between.
But yeah Max and van Gisbergen together at Bathurst, that's a dream come true, and a pretty realistic dream at that.
Redbull please give this man a seat. He got us points last year and he's an amazing reserve driver

The track's roads are way too narrow for today's f1 cars

Seeying ‘Daniel’ doing a Aussie road trip like six hours ago with a helmet like Lawson and eventually (on purpose) at Bathurst too… it’s obvious because the helmet was always on. Nevertheless great production!

It wasn’t about sport it was about tapping manufacturers megabucks. We could have gone back to bespoke engine makers like cosworth or Judd and the spectacle would have been great. But stuff the fans let’s lock in some hybrid garbage so Mercedes and Hamilton can win for a decade. How exciting 🤮

a 1:50 lap on an old car while taking corners so slow the tyres were likely still cold at the end. A 2023 F1 could probably do a 1:30ish lap there.

His sectors added up to a 1:58, i.e. 10 seconds slower than Jenson Button (McLaren MP4-23), 9 seconds slower than Craig Lowndes (McLaren MP4-23), same time as Luke Youlden (Brabham BT62, best non-F1 lap), 1 second faster than James Golding (S5000, outright race lap record), 3 seconds faster than Van Gisbergen (McLaren 650S, GT3 class race record), 6 seconds faster than Chaz Mostert (Supercars class race record).
So no, he wasn't even pushing in his best sectors.
If F1 can replace Melbourne with this track. I would love it!

They're no V10s, but a V8 is a good enough of a substitute

apparently Lawson was not as quick as Jensen Button back in 2011, 1m48.8s in a 2008 McLaren MP4-23, he did not break the 2 min mark
I think 1:30 in a modern f1 car is possible, but i don't think they'll ever push it for safety reasons.
@@noduj agree the runs are done with safety in mind as the track is not F1 rated hence why we will never see an F1 race at Bathurst. Also Lawson had only completed two laps prior to the 'run', one in the safety car . But it wold be interesting to see a 2023 car with a seasoned driver have a run .......

Best sectors added up to a 1:58 - the same time as the non-F1 record set by Luke Youlden in the Brabham BT62 which is built in a shed.
It would be much easier to watch if it didn't keep changing cameras every three seconds
I have an issue with painting old legendary cars with the current livery and sponsors. Imagine if McLaren painted an mp4-4 orange with Vuse and Google sponsors?
...RedBull needs to let one go for a proper fast lap..i wanna see what an F1 can do around the mountain... low 1:30s would be awesome to see...
Jenson Button reckons that around 1:35 is as fast as it could get, after doing a 1:48 with a conservative setup and little track knowledge. Craig Lowndes drove the same McLaren just one second slower despite never having driven a recent F1 car before.
@@mashy0001 i reckon the RB7 could do around 1:35 too..possibly a bit better.. i managed a 1:38 in the williams f1 in iracing on default setup...

Bathurst is not in Sydney.
There's no circuit in Australia other than Albert Park that can host an F1 race. The closest would be The Bend Motorsport Park.
