This was fantastic! My first synth was the Juno-6. Got a great deal at a music store in 1985 who wanted to get rid of it to make way for the new Juno-106's arriving shortly thereafter. As a 16-year-old, I learned what I could from the manual and had my basic set of sounds. Kept it mint in a homemade hard case for 22 years, but wasn't using it much with my newer gear due to the lack of MIDI. Eventually, I sold it in 2007, thinking it was the "responsible" thing to do since it wasn't getting used. I was ok for about 4 years until my interest in knob-tweaking was rekindled and my regrets for selling my JU-6 set in heavy. During my search for another one, I saw a series of videos by Marc Doty and learned several things I never knew about my own synth! Eventually found one for $400 and grabbed it. Did a tear-down and thorough cleaning and will never part with it again. Now today, your video has taught me even a few MORE things I didn't really know about this wonderful synth. Time to grab it from its case and try out some new sounds! :-)
Thanks very much 🙏🏻 ..and what a cool story, I can't imagine a better 'first synth' for a 16 year old.. I'm still very much 'in love' with my JU6.. I actually have a walk-through + a demo 'noodle' on that one here on the channel too 🤓
You saved my life. This tutorial is the most detailed video I’ve seen on any synth. I have a Juno 60 as well and you are like the 1980s manual simplified in video form. Bravo my man bravo!
I'm here because of the Air Jura plugin synth for the Akai Force. This was very helpful for understanding it better. Thanks I know many in Akai Force/MPC users will enjoy this, so I'll pass it around. Thank you.
You said 1992 in the beginning of your video, I know you meant to say 1982 as on your title. I bought a non-working one for $35 that had been non working for 20 years. I was lucky enough to fix it and reprogram it's presets. Great sounding synth...Thanks for the video...
Great video sir Just switched mine back on after 20 years. It’s took a few knocks in moves etc. Needs a good service I’d say. Thanks for taking time dude Loved your little drum & bass jam at 13.5 mins ish 🏄♀️
Wow... Thank you so much!!. I finally understand how to use this thing and I saved my factory preset sounds to logic. I was trying to figure out how to load your sounds (end of this video) but couldn't. Using a Scarlett Focusrite with output 1 selected but don't know how to from the TH-cam video. Unless I make an audio wav file of this video then try it from logic.
You're welcome 🙏🏻 .. well depending on whether or not you have Windows or MacOS, you need to go into Control Panel (System Preferences on Mac) and go to your System Sounds.. in there you can configure the 'system' to use the 'system sound' source.. or select your audio interface.. by default, any audio your computer plays should come out the audio interface 👍🏼
Perfect. Just what I needed. I have been using Moog Prodigy and Korg Polysix a lot and needed just the quick walkthrough how the Juno 60 works, without the wordiness. I never though of storing the sounds in my DAW before. Briliiant. Many thanks!
The most comprehensive, in depth video I have witnessed. Really useful... I lost all the factory presets - I think the battery died - but I have them on tape. Now all I have to do is record them into my DAW and transfer. Thanks man!
brings back memories. I had a Juno6 in 82 , bought just after the 60 came out, for half the price. Good deal at the time (300$) . Sold it 4 years later for 150$
I don't fully understand the relationship between VCF Cut frequency and VCF Env slider, is this like a mixer that splits the frequency level between the env flow? Like 2 different senda in a real mixer (in addition to LFP and KYBD)
Consider the VCF Envelope as automation for the VCF 'fader'. However, if you have your VCF 'fader' up too high.. then, generally speaking, you won't hear the VCF ENV 'making changes' to the VCF fader, because it's too bright. 👍🏼
@@tonelab thanks for the reply. Ive been using a (poorly documented) Juno-106 plugin (air jura) and noticed the envelope seems to peak / sustain higher than the maximum set on my VCF fader which confused me. For example when env fader is totally off it makes one sound, then env on it plays at a higher frequency. So I started watching videos of older Juno’s it modelled to see if there was a reason. Maybe it’s just the plugin and not the keyboards.
Nice one! I don't have a 106 just the 60 and a JX3P. Would love to complete the trio though. Played around on one a while back...such a bass beast. Look forward to the vid!
i love the JX3P, unfortunately.. never owned one.. but I have a Super JX-10 keyboard / PG800, but I love the colour scheme and the arpeggiator on the 3P.. I’ll eventually get on to that too, once I’ve covered the single OSC’s I have 🥰
@@tonelab Unfortunately no arpeggiator on the 3P but the built in sequencer more than makes up for it. A really fun great sounding synth. Typical 80's Roland :)
@@ebutuoytm7560 Sorry.. you're right.. I meant the onboard sequencer 🤦🏻♂️ ..it's kinda like the 101s onboard sequencer but polyphonic.. which is what I love about it 👌🏼 ..yeah, great little quirk, none of the others have one quite like that.. 🤷🏻♂️ I'll be doing a clip on that one day.. if there is a god ! 😂
@@tonelab - I'll need to double check mine again. I do seem to once remember a friend showing the Transpose on his Juno 60 and it functioned in a slightly different way to on the 6's.
Hello! I'm always get ER :-( do you have any recommendation level to feed the Juno-60? Do you know where to download the factory bank A and B ? Thanks a lot!!!

Hey Tonelab, love your Oberheim DX video. Question about my Juno-60. When I record out from the mono and the stereo output jack simultaneously, the output marked "stereo" is non-existent in signal form in my daw. It's just form the mono channel. I know the stereo channel is just supposed to be the chorus here, but I get nothing showing up in my daw on the second channel. I'm recording it as stereo. Am I doing something wrong? It seems there's no difference between hearing the mono channel and plugging in the mono + stereo.
Thanks 👍🏼 ..both the Mono & Stereo jacks should be sending out the same 'signal', unless of course, the Chorus is engaged. However, what you're describing sounds like either a functional issue with your 2nd output.. or, perhaps, just a simple case of the 2nd stereo signal not making it 'in' to your DAW. So, I suggest 'test' both your Juno outputs with a pair of headphones.. if you're not getting signal from both, then I fear it's a 'repair' job for a tech 🙏🏻
@@tonelab I just tested with headphones. Same signal out of mono and stereo. So that's good. And actually I'll walk back what I said, I do get a signal from both mono and stereo hitting my converters, but in Logic Pro it only records audio from the mono channel. Even when I have two separate audio channels set for the "mono" output and the "stereo" output. So this just might be DAW/user error. It's just the "stereo" output shows no signal in the daw, but it does on my converters. Hm. When you record both channels out do you show a signal for both two channels pretty evenly in your daw? Thanks for your help!
You may want to check your settings on your audio interface, or it's control software. It may not be a fault of Logic, but something to do with the interfaces 'gain' settings. If the Chorus is enabled, then a fluctuating Stereo signal can be expected 👍🏼
@@9uidin9li9ht2 Thanks very much 🙏🏻 I'm glad they're helping others.. because there's nothing worse than that feeling when you're in the middle of a song and you're slapped with that "how do I record this... or save that" kinda feeling.. and then suddenly a creative mood turns into a recon mission to find a needle in a haystack 🤦🏻♂️ 🤓
Hey Jamie, thanks 🙏🏻 ...well strangely enough, I do have a Prophet lined up but it's an original Rev. 2.. I still haven't seen a 5 or 10 'in the wild' yet (outside of a store), but 'never say never'.. I'd love to do an episode on the 10 👌🏼
Interesting question... there's nothing 'externally' that allows you to do that.. and as it's a DCO, Digital Controlled Oscillator, it may be hard-coded into a chip, but I can only speculate. perhaps, a look through the Service Manual may reveal any internal Tuning dials, if there's any available 👍🏼
since you've done tutorials on both the Juno-6 and this Juno-60 let's set aside the patch/connectivity difference and which do you prefer and which do you think is more definitively Juno, even by the slightest margin? i have a Juno-6 on the way from Japan ☺️🤗...edit: also in your intro i think you meant 1982 rather than 1992?
Oh I definitely said 1982.. might be my accent 🥴 It's a little bit like explaining 'wine tasting', some people have their own preferences of course.. but, 'my ears' prefer the Juno 6.. I found it to have a little more 'bite', and the Low's a little more rounded, less 'mud', more definition.. the 'Chorus' effect options have different speeds to the 60 as well, so I found i resonated more towards the 6.. than the 60.. the 106 is a different animal. But, the 60 is very convenient having the 'Patch Memory' and Tape Interface. 🙏🏻
@@tonelab Thanks so much for the reply, that's so interesting and I didn't know that the chorus and low end are different, although I heard about the "bite"...that makes me very happy I went with a 6. I can't wait to try to incorporate it into my music production :D
