    When I started trying out flight sims a couple of years ago, the first fighter plane I tried to learn how to fly was the MiG3 (in IL-2 1946). It was frustrating because I couldn't find any documentation in English for proper engine management and whatnot, and everyone said it was shit, and it really was twitchy and tough. I just find the plane to be very, very aesthetically pleasing, and when you manage to get shots on an enemy plane, the stock guns could really really light their stuff on fire. While I've been passively learning how to fly planes like the Corsair and the later 109s, I find I always go back to this plane in the hopes that after learning some more about air combat that I'll stand some kind of chance against at least a 109F4 pilot. Unlikely but, reaching for the stars. I'm happy to see this plane in this game, and once I muster the courage to get BoM I'm probably gunna try to fly it exclusively.

    This plane has somewhat "hot rod" look to it with the long nose and low cockpit.
    I think one of the better looking russian planes...

    I still fly in IL2 1946. While flying MiG3 I always stay above 5000 meters because if you lose energy at even midaltitudes, you are a duck. But this machine performs very well at high alts. Only thing I always do when attacking enemy on midalts is Boom and Zoom, so when dive I have a energy to climb. If I go to turnfight under 5000 I am dead man. But when we talking about high altitude fighting if Fw190 engage MiG3 in turn fight on 6000 meters or more, its a death for Fw 190. I only want to tell that I looking on MiG3 as a high altitude fighter and interceptor as well. But still the german machines are..... I don't know for you but for me they are the best and I always prefer Bf 109 or Fw190. Sorry for my bad grammar :)

    Hey Bis,I believe you have a scientific education and I really like your reasoning most of the time. I read FM discussions in the il2 Forum a lot and I don't really understand how you came to the conclusion that there are some Major flaws in the FM of the russian planes. I do not say that they are 100% correct (a Thing that is impossible anyway as you know) but I think you should state that the FM debate is an extremely complex one and that it is very hard to find any sources on things like the Yak1 flaps. My Point is: you described the Problems in BoS way too simplistic. For People who do not read the discussions in the Forum you give a wrong Impression of the game and the devs.The devs are very close to the community, even proved that they were right in a FM discussion very recently in a spectacular way (see Developer Diary 117)If anyone can provide data or sources, the devs will change something. They proved that many times. They also proved that they know a lot more about These complex physics than the great majority of the People who complain about the FM in the Forum. So there is no evidence of any bias, quite the opposite. There is just very, very complex aerodynamic phenomena. People must understand that. They only will if they look into the FM part of the forum more closely and separate the scientific from the uneducated discussions. Bis, people listen to you and believe what you are saying. Please give them the full picture of what is really going on in BoS.

    • @EdwardJerezG
      @EdwardJerezG 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They even had a Russian WWII veteran pilot test some of their early flight models for russian aircraft (from BoS). All of the aerodynamic phenomena seem alright. Hell, this is the only simulator I've ever used with a flight model that is detailed enough to let you feel when there's a disruption of the wing's laminar flow, whether it be due to partial stall or an imperfection in the wing airfoil (round impact, structural damage due to over-g, etc.).
      I am quite sure that Il-2: BoS (and subsequently BoM) have the best (most detailed, at least) flight models out of all of the flight simulators I have used (x-plane, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Rise of Flight, Wings of Prey, War Thunder, Il-2: Cliffs of Dover, etc.)

    So I actually just got back into BoS after buying it, playing it a bit, then falling out of it after having a falling out with my usual wingman. Is there any way the gripes you have with the game- esp. the inconsistencies between nations- could be elaborated on? Or, if you've already done so, could someone point me in the right direction to find that?
    Like, I've noticed some stuff myself- the 109s (namely the F-4, I tend to not fly the Gustav much because of the poor cockpit visibility) cook their engines really fuckin quickly regardless of airspeed/altitude/ambient temp when run at combat settings for more than a couple of minutes at a time. Most of my experience with the Bf-109 comes in the form of the K-4 available in DCS, which has a different powerplant/radiator setup/engine control box, so I've sort of tried to tell myself "oh, I'm just used to the K-4", but it does seem suspect that the aircraft overtemps in the middle of a russian winter. Also, the IL-2 itself seems INSANELY resistant to damage- a burst of 20mm, roughly a second in length, almost every shell impacting the wing root, did nothing to put the enemy aircraft into the dirt.

      +Skele Boner I talk about some of those things in a video called 'Buying Guide' (iirc) - it's long and maybe a bit long, but it kinda sums it all up. Quickly explained, I believe Sims have longer development cycles than other games. As such, I accept that 'released' doesn't necessitate 'finished'. Sims take time to mature and I think it is going to be some time until BoS/M reaches it's peak - if it does at all. For more info, look for that video. IL-2s, you can knock them out quite easily - but it takes practice - check out a video called 'killing IL-2s' (or something similar) on my channel. As for inconsistencies with nations, apparently there have been some changes recently but without a stable connections I can't test anything.

      @therealCG62 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bismarck Ah, I appreciate the response- yeah, I actually went through and watched that shortly after leaving that comment- O, the wonders of speaking before looking for yourself, eh?
      I believe you mention in that video (or one on a similar topic- binge watching blurs the lines between videos) the twitchiness of BoS/BoM's flight model, and I think that itself might be why I've been having difficulties. The ever so slight change in stick deflection that comes from pulling the trigger (TM warthog triggers are pretty heavy compared to other sticks) may be throwing my aim off significantly more than I'm expecting- I loaded up IL-2 1946, flew out in a 109E-4 that felt well-enough modeled, and was able to quite accurately put shots into individual aircraft components as long as I could maintain coordinated flight.
      Who knows- this is always kind of an ugly topic because very few of us have experience actually flying high performance prop fighters ourselves, and it's very easy to accuse specific devs of favoritism or what have you because of the idealogical divides that came from the war these fighters flew over.

    hey i have a question: how are the RS-82's in BoX? because for god sake they were space age weapons in 1946. totally broken splash damage both area and damage-wise, meanwhile also being deadly accurate on air to air combat, which didn't correspond to the historical data at all.

    The producion of this plane has been discontinued in 1942, since it was designed to fight at high altitudes (higher than 5000 m), but actual battles in Eastern Front were just below 5000 m, but below 5000m this MiG was not that good. Jakovlev fighters outperformed it at these altidudes, so these MiGs have been passed eventually only to Moscow Air Defence, where they were intercepting high-altidude German reconnaisance planes

    Bismarck, I am curious to what you find frustrating with IL2: BoS. I play a lot of it primarily on multiplayer, never on singleplayer. From what I've seen from the devs for single player is very little and it wouldn't surprise me if that is your biggest gripe amongst a lot of other things. You certainly aren't the only, the devs have taken some very strange alternatives through the development. Honestly Bismarck it would be great if you were to express all your feelings on a single post on the Il2: BoS forum, as a youtuber who exposes the game regularly to others it's important for the devs to know what effect the sim is currently having on others and your viewers.

    83 hours in and i find myself still being piss poor with shooting in dogfights... or evading people on my 6... loving the game non the less... but its unforgiving for sure, any tips for "beginner" aircraft?

    • @EdwardJerezG
      @EdwardJerezG 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, if you are used to first person shooters you have to change your mindset quite a bit in order to be able to dogfight. First of all, you're not pointing a gun, you're pointing a whole aircraft at your target. If you want to keep steady, precise aim, you need to respect the aircraft and let it "aim by itself". The basic, easiest way to aim is to follow the general maneuver of your enemy and get a bit ahead of him in angle, setting your plane for a clear shot slightly uncentered towards the direction your enemy is moving relative to your own movement.

    • @EdwardJerezG
      @EdwardJerezG 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try to practice maneuvering your plane a lot. Start trying simple maneuvers like rolls and loops until you're consistent. Then keep moving up to more complex maneuvers until you can pull off most of them. You can try many of the combat maneuvers against AI controlled aircraft in quick missions.
      I suggest taking a read at this page and practicing the maneuvers listed in it (do further research if you feel the page doesn't explain a maneuver deeply enough).
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_fighter_maneuvers#BFM_concepts
      Finally, remember to aim softly. Don't try to force a direct aim, you'll just lose energy by doing that.

    hay Bismark, my mom lived in Berlin from the mid 70's till 1999, she went to the D.M.Z and said that it felt like the border between east and west Germany. do you think this is a valid comparison? or do you feel the situation in Korea is more "intense" (in search of a better word)
    would be interesting to hear your opinion on the matter

    • @MilitaryAviationHistory
      @MilitaryAviationHistory  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Never saw the border between East & West. As for the DMZ, it's basically theatrics. They try their best to make you scared. Most of their rules make sense (like don't wave, don't scream, don't dance etcetc) but it's essentially western propaganda. The tourist tours are agreed upon with the North (what days and time) and the 'stand-off' is fake since the guards are only there if the tours are happening. Tbh, I felt that it all was a bit silly and that the info they give is simplified at best. In fact it's borderline misleading. But I also had the advantage of having studied the whole affair for two years - most other tourists don't and they believe every word.

    Hey Bis, do you believe that this game is possibly heading the same way as WT with the bias? or do you believe it still has a chance to pull itself out of the gutter?

    • @MilitaryAviationHistory

      +Sam I don't think there is bias in WT, only incompetence. As for BoS, I don't know. I will stick with the game and see how it progresses. Overall, the BoS situation is only at the 'annoying' stage at this point in time.

    • @NachtJaeger110
      @NachtJaeger110 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Metaphyzikal Bravo It took me a long time to understand what a real plane can and can't do. You need to be very gentle at first and listen to the wind noises and the shaking. The plane warns you well in advance when it is going to stall. You rarely can throw your stick all the way to the edges. It takes a long time to get a feeling for this. That is why this is a sim and not a game, you are really learning something about aerodynamics if you stick to it.
