    ========= No Bullets Fly LYRICS =========
    From down below an enemy spotted
    So hurry up, rearm and refuel
    But through the bomber’s damaged airframe
    See wounded men, scared to their bone
    Look to the right and then look again
    And see the enemy in the eye
    No bullets fly, spared by his mercy
    Escorted out, out of harms way
    Fly, fighting fair, it’s the code of the air
    Brothers, heroes, foes
    Killing machine
    Honour in the skies
    B17
    Flying home
    Killing machine
    Said goodbye to the cross he deserved
    He risked his life two times that day
    To save an unknown enemy
    Escort to safety, out of the killzone
    A short salute, then departed
    ========= Historic Fact ==========
    Following a successful air raid on the German city of Bremen, Charlie Brown's American B-17 bomber, ‘Ye Old Pub’, suffered severe damage. When German fighter ace, Franz Stigler, was ordered to shoot it down, he risked his life to escort the bomber to safety instead of attacking.

You could say their music is anti war, because they tell it like it happened. My other favorite is "Sky Pilot" by Eric Burdon and the Animals. I understand "sky pilot" was military slang for military chaplain. You might also like to look up the story of George Zabelka, who was "sky pilot" to the 509th Bomber Squadron, which dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. At 3:38 they show Stigler pointing over his shoulder to the right, followed by Brown shaking his head "No!" That actually happened. I read the book "A Higher Call". Stigler didn't think the B-17 could make it back to England due to how heavily damaged it was and was pointing them to neutral Sweden where they would be safely interned. Brown thought Stigler wanted him to land at a German airfield, which was why he refused. BTW, Stigler flew close formation with the B-17 over the coast because he knew German AA gunners would recognize a 109 and not fire. He not only refused to fire himself, but also protected the B-17 from other German fire. If any man deserves an honored place in Valhalla, it is Franz Stigler.

During the battle, the upper floors were hit by shell fire and set ablaze. The British commander knew the wounded in the basement had to be evacuated before the building collapsed, but the incoming fire was to heavy. He sent word, under a flag of truce, to the German commander explaining the situation and requesting a temporary ceasefire so the wounded could be saved. Not only did the German commander agree, but many German soldiers laid down their weapons and crossed unarmed into the British perimeter to assist in the rescue operation. May both Brown and Stigler always be remembered for what happened that December day in 1943. To add to this story, Charlie Brown actually took Franz Stigler to a reunion of the 378th Bombing Group, an Air Force reunion that Charlie had become a part of after the war. Once the members of the Bombing Group met Franz Stigler, they made him an honorary member of the 378th for his heroism in saving the Pub that day.
    Never shall we forget.

    • @goldosprey
      @goldosprey 3 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      Its a story not many know, and with good reason...for if the story ever broke during wartime, Franz would probably have executed. But the story goes, that he spotted Ye Old Pub, wounded, on fire, bloodied. He could have fired. He could have downed the men. He could have been awarded for his...barbarism. But his own master, his old commander once told him, that to shoot such pilots would be tantamount to treason and would put a bullet between Mr. Steigler's eyes. So despite his repeated gestures to order the plane down, at great risk to all involved, he escorted Ye olde Pub home. Ye Old Pub's commander told them to censor the story to save the man's life. Years later, the pilot one Charlie Brown sought out the pilot and they met. It was a glorious meeting. And they remained friends until they flew on their final mission together into the annals of history. Perhaps the lesson here is that at the end of the day, honor trumps any award.
      Yes I did that and I hope everyone appreciates it. RIP Charlie Brown and Franz Stieger

Yesterday I finally watched this video and was pulled in by the story and of course the song. I spent the rest of the day researching the event. Today my wife’s grandmother called me, she said she found the last book her husband was reading before he died and she wanted me to have it since we often talked about WW2. The only modern equivalent in terms of taking damage and not giving any fucks would probably be the A-10s. The USAF can keep their exorbitantly expensive F-35s. Those fancy jets can't take nearly as much damage as an A-10 and most certainly can't be easily repaired while in the field.

    • @equarg
      @equarg 3 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      The repairs the mechanics did would give the FAA today an aneurism. ☠️
      It was supposed to take 25 hours to remove and replace a single B-17 engine. Mechanics learned how to do it in 4 hours.
      They merged 2 planes into one, tied things together with bailing wire and a prayer.
      This is why there are almost no flying WW2 planes. Only replicas and a few that were sitting on the factory floor when the end is the war was announced.
      I actually got to see a super rare Spitfire that was rescued as a derelict airframe in a Asian museum, that had seen and survived combat.
      There is a damn good reason why the FAA and the FARRs are so strict.

      @@jeremiahbuck2450 The point is that the air-force was wanting the F-35 to take over the A-10s duty of close air support. For an aircraft to adequately perform a CAS role to troops on the ground, it cannot be moving as fast as an F-35 is capable of. They'd never accurately hit enemy infantry and smaller vehicles on the ground moving at speed, which means the F-35's attack runs on ground targets would have to be slower, which would then cause the F-35 to be vulnerable to return fire.
      The A-10, by comparison, is slower but more heavily armored. This allows them to perform CAS missions more reliably and linger in the airspace of friendly ground forces for far longer. The F-35 is a good multi-role fighter, but CAS is simply not a role it is suited to at this point in time.

    A random person risking literally everything they have including their future, defying their orders, defying their survival instinct, defying common logic itself, just to ensure a few random people make it home for christmas.
    That is what it means to be a hero: defying what makes sense for the sake of doing what is right

    This song always, without fail, chokes me up. Just the whole story itself is great, but the fact the two would actually come to meet one another after the war and become friends is just... It always tugs at the heart strings. Especially when you watch the interview with the two and Stiegler is in tears when he says he loves Charlie like a brother. And THAT is the most metal thing out there.
    I actually got to walk through a B-17 that these old guys have kept running and I was shocked to see it was Christened after the Ye Olde Pub. The funny thing is I was blasting this song in anticipation to get to see a real B-17 just to get a lecture by the pilot on the history behind the story I already loved so dear. I adore it...

      I am not the type of person to cry even at some emotional stories. This song did not make me cry, but that doesn't make me think that this is a bad song because it's become one of my top favorites, probably even up there with Bismarck and Inmate 4859. The part of the video that struck me was when the narrator said "...but as he always said, he got something better." And trying to hold down tears is pretty hard.

    It seems that Franz Stigler took a final nod towards an era that started and ended in World War 1 during the dawn of plane to plane combat. When pilots were more like knights of the skies, fighting with a code of honor and admiring eachother's skills. Machine guns and new combat strategies in the air cut that era short but Stigler's actions shows that it was not forgotten.
    And I think there is no better fitting way to tell this story in such a powerful manner.
    Sabaton makes us enjoy music and urges us to hit up google and learn more.
