    Hi Sid, the patio of your first customer in Gloucester reminded me of what mine was like a few years ago. I also live in Gloucester and have a north facing garden with an Indian sandstone patio. I tried every cleaner in the book, none touched it and they’re not cheap are they! Anyway, desperation drove me to use my noggin and I decided to buy and try Crystal caustic soda, (IT’S NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED) and all PPE was worn. I mixed it up in a bowl and painted it on each slab individually. Left it for an hour or so and pressure washed it off. My slabs looked like new and after 3 years the lichen hasn’t come back.
    Wishing you all the best.

    I have a patio with that black spot. It depends on the type of stone too - mine is two different types and one cleans up nicely and the rest is impossible!! Even if it’s cleaned regularly it is a total pain, so good luck getting it spotless 🤞. Aren’t John and Jackie just the best. What a wonderful couple - but you deserve it Sid.

      He'll need a resovior with distilled water or a RO filtration system, or at the very least a serious multistage water filter on top of what he's got, but it could be a good add on for sure. I've done a few and learned the hard way that you need to take proper care to ensure there is zero chance of mineral etching on them, but all in all its a simple job that pays quite well (in my area at least).
      Good thought.

    That black stuff is a major pain, and it was really bad. Try not to be too hard on yourself, it was massively improved from what it was, and I am confident with some continued treatment you will figure it out. Sometimes when stuff is that bad you just need time for the structure of it to break down more. And that might be part of the learning process too, learning when to give it time instead of trying to muscle through it.

      Probably has to do with sitting water on the stones. Places that get little to no sun to dry out completely will go bad like that. Also constantly getting rain won't help either.

  • @pauldowninguk
    @pauldowninguk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    What you may find is that some stubborn black spots need full strength Hypo applied to totally dry slabs. So go back when they are dry and try again. Sometimes you have to reach for the acids even if it is only to soften the black spots rather than actually do the cleaning. Acids can cause yellowing on certain slabs, so as always, do a test spot first. And rinse rinse and rinse!

    Had the same problem, but don't even own a pressure washer as I have the impression that it cleans great first time around, but makes the problem even worse in future years. I got the back spots off with soda dissolved in boiling water and a wire brush. Since then I just used hot water and a hard brush twice a year and everything still looks like new.

    I noticed that, at times, you use the turbo tip and, at others, you use a regular nozzle to do the same thing (such as doing the trim around a walkway before switching to the surface cleaner). Do you have a specific reason for using the turbo tip vs. a regular nozzle? Just wondering.

    Put neat hypo on it a couple of times. Let it dwell and p/w it off. Not sure what machine you're using but maybe it's too weak... If it's still there get an old cloth soak it in neat hypo and place it on the lichen and go back the next day...
