I work with elderly and it is so hilarious how accurate this is as to how they talk. I work specifically with dementia patients as a nurse, and trying to get them to stop going off on tangents so they will take their medications is so hard sometimes. So hilarious. Like you say one thing hoping they will stop, and they take that and go off about that for forever.
My nana does this to scammers she’s telling them she’s doing it all while acting proper senile and after 30 minutes she just goes “I don’t have a computer lovey this has been fun but bargain hunt is on” Edit: my nana actually passed away on 4th March 2024 she was a fantastic woman seeing this comment again made me smile. I miss her everyday 🩷

I agree, i was texting with a scammer one time, just out of interest. Wanted to see how far i could go before getting pay walled by them. And it was actually a very reasonable conversation, like they could write sentences that actually made sense, if i hadn't gone in knowing it was a scam i totally could of potentially gotten done. The last message i sent before blockijg was how dissapointed i was in them for not speaking just utter gibberish like so many scammers do, coz like. At least there fun to interact with.

Most scammers get like stupidly aggressive after you've wasted their time. They completely drop any level of professionalism after an hour or so, because most people they trick just go "oh, ok" and do whatever they say.
A Polish youtuber who specialises in popularising science did a one-off like this one, while having a security professional helping him prolong it for hours. When he admitted at the end that he knew they were impersonating bank employees, the guy straight up started begging 'Come on man, at least send us 50 PLN for the time we talked'.
I'm obsessed with all the subtle ways Boga has that virtual machine set up to fuck with the scammers. I could watch them struggle with the fake captcha for hours.
"Your version of Windows is illegal" I remember when I was really young, I was on the computer and got that error message that said "This program has performed an illegal operation and needs to close", so I got really scared, closed my computer, and was just waiting for the cops to show up at my house for the rest of the day.
I got banned from a minecraft server abt 10 years ago. the message was something along the lines of "you have been banned, and your IP has been reported to the FBI" and i literally cried

And then he had the audacity to tell ME that I didn’t have to be so rude as if he wasn’t trying to rob a homeless shelter.
I used to work at a grocery store and we'd occasionally get scammers calling, usually they'd hang up when we did the store intro thing "Thanks for calling [store] how can I help you?" but one of them didn't, apparently the store had won a trip to some hotel. They wouldn't/couldn't understand that they had called a store, so I had to hang up. They never called back 🤷

Imagine: you're a group of scammers trying to steal money from old people. You get roped into a soup business, get intentionally called the wrong name, give them a bunch of money on accident and then get locked out by a very confusing "not a robot" test.
The 'sending a bunch of money' is part of the scam, becase they want you to feel guilty and 'pay it back to them', even though they just moved it from one of your accounts to the other.

My grandparents got scammed last week. The scammers said that I was drunk driving and hit and killed a pregnant lady. "I" needed $9,800 (just below the felony amount) for my lawyer. My grandma withdrew the amount in $100 bills and went to FedEx to ship it. The lady working at the local FedEx wouldn't send it and was the only thing that stopped my poor little grandma. Edit: She passed away last night. Peacefully as far as I know. Thanks to everyone who's responded. Coming back to this will help me out now that she is gone.

The point of getting angry at the elderly is in the hopes it overwhelms and flusters them and because most elderly people struggle with critical thought due to age or things like dementia and stuff theyll be too overwhelmed by the person angry at them to question it and try to fix the situation by doing what they want. Distressing them is the point because it adds to the confusion and panic
A major facet of a lot of these scams is to create a sense of urgency. Pressures of the environment actually select for very impatient people because of this

I just found this video and I'm used to a lot from having heard hundereds of hours worth of Kit's calls, but that moment really was too much for me. I literally had an asthma attack from laughing, felt like dying but still continued to laugh, no joke.

Fun story: my friend one time got a scam caller one day during dinner. The guy was claiming his (my friend) macbook had a virus. My friend doesn't have a mac and he said as much but the guy just ignored that. Long story short my friend got the scammer to walk him through how to "fix his macbook" over the course of this 15 minute conversation and at the end the guy was like "so did you do it?" and my friend went "no I have a dell." and the guy just fucking *hung up* out of anger.

I used to work at call centers and I can confirm we definitely talk about the weird customers we get, they would have had an interesting nickname and fond remembrance from time to time in group chat 😂

Imagine: you're a group of scammers trying to steal money from old people. You get roped into a soup business, get intentionally called the wrong name, give them a bunch of money on accident and then get locked out by a very confusing "not a robot" test.
The 'sending a bunch of money' is part of the scam, becase they want you to feel guilty and 'pay it back to them', even though they just moved it from one of your accounts to the other.

My grandparents got scammed last week. The scammers said that I was drunk driving and hit and killed a pregnant lady. "I" needed $9,800 (just below the felony amount) for my lawyer. My grandma withdrew the amount in $100 bills and went to FedEx to ship it. The lady working at the local FedEx wouldn't send it and was the only thing that stopped my poor little grandma.
Edit: She passed away last night. Peacefully as far as I know. Thanks to everyone who's responded. Coming back to this will help me out now that she is gone.

their only focus is to extort as much money possible, which is why they don’t show visible respect to the elders they are trying to call if they aren’t getting what they wanted
The point of getting angry at the elderly is in the hopes it overwhelms and flusters them and because most elderly people struggle with critical thought due to age or things like dementia and stuff theyll be too overwhelmed by the person angry at them to question it and try to fix the situation by doing what they want. Distressing them is the point because it adds to the confusion and panic

Fun story: my friend one time got a scam caller one day during dinner. The guy was claiming his (my friend) macbook had a virus. My friend doesn't have a mac and he said as much but the guy just ignored that. Long story short my friend got the scammer to walk him through how to "fix his macbook" over the course of this 15 minute conversation and at the end the guy was like "so did you do it?" and my friend went "no I have a dell." and the guy just fucking *hung up* out of anger.
My grandad did the same thing except he said “so how do I turn on the computer” at the end of the conversation
