If you watch many of the British films from the period, they all had excellent audio tracks although picture quality may not be as good. The reverse can be said of American films - good picture, but poor sound.
The problem is surround sound with multiple speakers, a truly bullshit idea to think the moviegoers are getting better sound, when they are not. The old mono sound forced the sound mixer to have the right balance of dialogue, music and effects. Another factor was the old film based showings where the projector noise was overcome by dropping the low frequencies and emphasizing the mid and highs. In the process, sound mixers made sure the voices were heard by adding 3 to 5 dB at 3K, where the human ear is most sensitive. When that was scrapped for surround sound, the mixer got sloppy and voices were no longer peaked an processed at zero dB. So the voices went "in the mud." Since the re-conditioned general sheeple public never complained, the left it like that. That left the music overpowering and voices waaaay down like to 15 dB. Thus, it doth suck. Yes, I was in the biz!
Heartily agree. This is one of the reasons that I do not go to movie theaters any more; am tired to audio-pyrotechniques in damn nearly every picture, trying to win an Oscar, for 'Best Sound or Sound Editing', and you wind up wondering just what the Hell the actors are saying. Good 1947 British comedy film, directed by Vernon Sewell and starring Robert Morley and Felix Aylmer. The film is an adaptation of the novel No Nightingales by Caryl Brahms and S. J. Simon, inspired by the enduring reputation of the property at 50 Berkeley Square as "the most haunted house in London". Despite its stellar cast of highly respected character actors and its inventive use of special effects, the film proved less successful at the box-office than had been hoped in the post WWII year of Paris Peace Treaty, The ‘Exodus’ ship leaving France for Palestine carrying 4,500 Jewish Holocaust survivor refugees, the Roswell UFO incident suggesting that the US military responsible for covering up alien contact, World Series games broadcasted on tv for the 1st time, India gaining independence from British empire as well as British Royal Navy detonating 6,800 tons of explosives in a concerted attempt to destroy the small island of Heligoland in Germany creating the biggest non-nuclear explosion to date, not to mention Princess Elizabeth marrying the Duke of Edinburgh.
