Don’t Be a Baby and Keep Making Your Art - Jerry Saltz - The Art2Life Podcast Episode 54

  • Art2Life.com - Making art is hard enough, but hearing from others whether it is good or not is especially so. Every artist I know already has, hard-wired within them, a pretty tough critic. I certainly do. So I never have been particularly drawn to listening to more of them. I know, of course, art criticism is essential in the art world. I get all that, but truthfully, I have always been a little leery of outside criticism in case it made me stop making art. It feels safer to hear more from those who are actually making art. They were the ones I thought whose voices mattered. At least for me.
But today you are going to meet an art critic. But not the kind I imagined. Not at all. His name is Jerry Saltz. He is the Pulitzer Prize-winning, senior art critic and columnist for New York Magazine. He has a bajillion followers on Instagram and is a New York Times bestselling author. He also cares a ton about art and especially artists. Which isn’t surprising because he was one. He switched mid-career because, ironically, his inner critic wouldn’t leave him alone, and it all became too much.
Jerry is whip-smart, funny, and at times, daringly truthful. But this is what I love about him: he just tells the truth. Or rather his truth. That is rare these days. Jerry is the artist's art critic. He is so on our side and wants nothing more for us than to simply stay together and above all else, to keep making our art. Join me now for this startlingly vulnerable and caring conversation about art and life with one of the most revered voices in the art world: Jerry Saltz.
    ================================
LISTEN IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN…
How Jerry became a bestselling author and why you need to read his books [3:19]
Becoming a different kind of artist and recognizing the respect in art criticism [15:05]
Why artists need one another [25:48]
Making an enemy of envy and why we need to just keep making our art [32:01]
Where Jerry feels the art world is heading [39:15]
Jerry’s advice for artists when they receive criticism and the time Jerry criticized my work [46:47]

This couldn't have been more perfectly timed for me. I was listening to you both as I was painting a large piece of crapstraction. The message to "just keep working" and to "keep making art even if it's bad" forced me to keep my brush in my hand. Thank you for all you do to keep artists effecting on their own behalf. I look forward to buying Jerry's book.

This resonated with me more than I thought. I listened to it again. . . the inner demons are real. I have been withdrawing for a while now. Get on with it! Time to make some bad art and share it with another artist. "You must commune with your own kind." "Finish the dam thing!" "We need to take the money." "Two pandemics." So many gems in Art Is Life.

OMG thank you ever so much for ALL that you do for all of us artists out here. I was ushered into the art world at the age of 59 and am now 64 seemingly this is what I need to know myself...etc... I appreciate you here on TH-cam more than you know! Keep it coming!

They can’t make money selling art, so they’re gossiping around the art topic instead. If they were real artists, they’d be painting. Not wasting time on gossip about art hobby. Art is NOT a business and people don’t buy original art. They’re BROKE. That’s why you can only make money gossiping about art, but not by actually being an artist. Be careful who you follow! If you didn’t make a liveable income from art after 2-3 years of watching these garbage videos, YOU are the customer (watching ads). Don’t waste your time on these fakers. Get a job to support your art hobby and stop watching this сrар 😂

Art is a hobby. You need a real job to support yourself and buy art supplies. But people are broke, they don’t buy art. Making income from this hobby is unrealistic. You’ll have better chances buying a lottery. Too many people are awesome at art, but there’s almost no demand.

Your description of him surprised me because it fits the art critic he took over for at The Village Voice: Peter Schjeldahl. When Jerry Saltz took over the contrast in the tone was a shock. It got cold, ruthless and ugly. Maybe he has mellowed. His articles used to belittle the artists he was writing about. It was mean and dark. Hearing him admit to being an asshole helped. Maybe I can let go of what he once was.

  • @gathercreatelivewithleslie8340

I don't think art criticism is necessary, it's just that persons opinion anyway. Forever, people have preferred whatever is normal and usual for them. Every revolutionary artist has done something different and unconventional. If they had listened to critics it would have stunted them, Van Gogh, Picasso, Monet. We don't need art critics to tell us to like something or someone to tell me if I don't like it something is wrong with me.

He should've stood his ground since his critique of the soup situation is just as reasonable as the critics' views. Getting gaslit so easily because some of the people he cares about having a different view on things and ultimately getting them to you is pathetic.

Sister Wendy, Happy little clouds of Bob Ross, Jerry Saltz. I actually watched sister Wendy videos & looked at her books & love her. And I love happy little clouds!!! Yet, like the interviewer who was criticized by our beloved critic, (for "crapstraction"), in my case, I was excommunicated by him!!!! Totally broke my heart!... hmmmm?????? This podcaster is a great example of unconditional love & acceptance, (which I also have or I wouldn't be listening to this talk). It seems that's the best art world to create... Love wins. Peace. Blessings. Praise Jesus.

I have no issue with whether my art is good or bad. I would like to know if what I'm making is art or not, but that's apparently not something I'm supposed to want to know. FWIW I don't care if *you* think if is or not, I want to know for myself.
