I really love the Apogee FX Rack plugins, so I’m sure that this one will be great! Learning of Bob’s relationship with Apogee is actually one of the reasons I first purchased a Firewire duet way back, and I have been using their gear ever since. Nice to see his name is officially on this plug-in. Thanks Warren for sharing this.

Bob is the sound of 80s rock.. his big drum sound, the big NY Style (parallel) compression. left the light drums of the 70s behind. he mixed Chic - discos best ... worked with Nile and Bowie - they had no complaints when they heard his mix... thanks to Bob! - great video of the Stones in the East Village NYC... yeah cool plugin Warren

The stereo effect on those delays and reverbs is wild. It comes through even on my little laptop speakers.
You know a song is an eternal classic when it becomes a ballpark staple. When a relief pitcher comes out of the bullpen, takes his walk to the mound, and throws his warmups to catcher, you'll often hear "Start Me Up" played over the PA system.* Or, you might hear it before the start of the game, right after the National Anthem. It gets the crowd pumped. It's also got to be one of the most identifiable opening riffs in the history of music. You hear those first three chords, and you can instantly name that tune. I dare say it rivals the opening four notes of Beethoven's 5th.
    * The exception being closers, of course, who usually have their own intro song when they come out of the bullpen, e.g. Mariano Rivera and "Enter Sandman", Trevor Hoffman and "Hells Bells", etc.

@@Producelikeapro Yes, it's one of the great classic songs of our youth. The Stones have put out a lot of great songs over the years, but most of them came out either before I was born, or when I was a little kid. "Start Me Up" and the "Tatoo You" album, however, came out the same month I turned 12, so I was old enough to appreciate it. That's when I really started getting into the Stones, and started buying a mess of 45s of their old hits.

I'm rarely stingy when it comes to plugins, but $349 is stretching it, IMO. At least for this. Feels like you're paying for the name. Clearmountain. The God of mixing.
A truly unique plugin like Adaptiverb is easier to justify at such a cost.
One should also bear in mind, that what has made Bob a legend, was his mindset - his creativity. So, IMO, most producers (and mixers) are better off experimenting with their own fx chains, finding their own sonic personality. One this is inspiration - another is emulation. It's good to get inspired, but emulation = creative death.
That said, the plugin sounds good. And can be a time-saver. So not impossible I'll get it, at some point;)

WAIT! He mixed 'Summer Madness' by Kool and the Gang? Uh, I'm speechless.* Just heard it in headphones for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Wow. That one is part of the soundtrack of my childhood.
Don't like to waste time talking about the stuff I don't listen to. So let's dig a bit deep...
A song that hold's its own in any playlist I have today is Bryan Ferry's 'Slave to Love' (Boys and Girls)
And maybe you can verify: if he mixed the "Meet the Robinsons" soundtrack, he mixed "Little Wonders" ? One of my favorite songs of all time.
And did he really mix 'Three of a Perfect Pair' ?!? (The song and the album was huge to me for a long time. 'Model Man' is a good choice.)
I also confess to a soft spot for The Calling album Two. ('Chasing the Sun' and 'If Only' in particular.)
    Okay, I'm never speechless. ; )

I'm guessing vox for the amp. there doesn't seem to be any break up though. at low volumes it doesn't happen. maybe use a good clipping plugin or pedal. or if that amp is a valve amp, just crank that baby up. the volume and tone will saturate. and there will be speaker breakup.

  • @MatsDagerlind
    @MatsDagerlind 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Rolling Stones Tattoo You, although the flanger effect on nearly all guitars sounds very 80's dated and cold. But perhaps this is due to Bob using Eventide outboards, as is said in this video. Even the plugins they make today have a cold artificial sound that I don't care much for. Another complaint is that the rhythm guitars are too loud and the vocals not loud enough on some of the songs (e.g. Start Me Up). Apart from that the production is pristine. And of course the songs are some of the Stones' best.
Also, the story is that it's Mick, not Keith who plays the opening riff on Start Me Up on the record.

Hey Warren, just want to say really respect and
appreciate what your doing spreading your years of knowledge,
    tips and engineer secrets!
I have a question regarding blending sounds and phasing, could probably search for the answer but i'd rather ask you..
If to keep things in phase the waves have to be lined up with each other why does duplicating the exact same sound
create phasing (sound weaker and thinner) when played with itself,
but we use things like parallel blending
for example combining clean and distorted versions of the exact same mix bus together it create a thicker soundscape,
or drum parallels but when you track guitar rather then duplicate the exact same take (which causes it to sound thinner) it's better to track a second take and
combine them for a thicker sound..
Why does using the exact same take or sound work in parallel with itself sometimes
while in other instances create phasing issues.. but when all in all waves are supposed to line up to be in phase?

Hi Warren, it's a beauty indeed I must say and a classic on it's own. The profound music, the intimate sound, the good memories. One of my favorites for sure. Bob's sound is sooo recognizable, there is no one like it. And all those fantastic singles he did...Hall & Oates' Adult Education, Power Station's Some Like it Hot, Madonna's Like a Virgin....and not to forget his live engineer activities...he even mixed Live Aid in Philadelphia ánd produced one of the best Drum Sample cd's till date :-) Thanks Warren for interviewing this man, love your channel. Regards, Marcel.

I checked apogee's site, MAC only, awww c'mon why ? surely compiling the code written for AAX Native, AU, VST Host Applications can't be a technical issue, everyone else does it, is it more of a marketing thing or some er, $input from apple ?
