Fast and short without losing the content required to proper describe it informatively and raising the bar by including cost and resource sharing. Nice, thanks.
WHY THEY CALL IT THE CLOUD - Originally, the name cloud was given as something that hangs over you wherever you go. You can get access to it from anywhere.
If you're talking about the animations then YAY! Linus was all like, "You are liek taaaking tooo long to dooo theees." And I'm all like, "Well, I have fancy animations, my good man. Patience is a virtue!" So if you like the animations (that spinning globe was top notch, I think!) Make it known!
Why bother setting up an FTP server? Just use BitTorrent Sync, it works just like DropBox, except it's faster, it's free, and you have as much storage as your hard drive allows... And it's immensely secure too You don't need to sign up for an account, you don't need to pay anything, if you leave a computer running at home you can sync with it from anywhere in the world, and it's super easy to set up...
I personally use Tonido and Teamviewer to manage my files remotely... I can actually run low resource programs over the internet over a Teamviewer VPN... Best thing of all: Both are free! (albeit one only for personal use)
Great video, Linus. If you can sort out the logistics, perhaps a video on setting up your own personal cloud (FTP server) on the main tech tips channel?
Yeah! Cloud is cool, especially if you know how to manage it wisely. Cloud management platforms like Binadox can help you to reduce your cloud bills and be aware of all the internal processes in the cloud.
What's so crazy is that having never been told what the "cloud" is, I already assumed everything he said in this video. In other words, sounds about right!
it would be nice that there would be a video how to make a DIY home cloud (linux, windows based) for your photos and other staff, witch you can connect to from anywhere where is internet.
Linus, i dont recommend Hotspot Shield, i have a years worth but i already switched now to another 20 days later and im A LOT happier with Privateinternetaccess, its a lot faster and their support is amazing and the number of servers and security is way better
If anyone wants to setup your own Dropbox, take a look at Tonido. It's a matter of a couple of clicks to install and then you can access or share any folder you want. There's no shared key to manage, you can give permissions and passwords to people. Awesome...
Around 2:55, i got really confused. How can you upload/download data to cloud storage service faster than the speed that you pay for (for your home network)? When you upload/download data, it is just ones and zeroes, no different than a TH-cam video or a movie being streamed. How is the bandwidth capabilities of the cloud service relevant? If you have a 25Mbps plan with your ISP, then you cannot upload/download _any_ data at speeds higher than that.
I think what he is getting at is this... A) Your home connection likely has a much slower upload speed than it does download speed. If this is the case, then you download from a service like dropbox at 25mbps at your house, and maybe something like 50mbps at your work. However, if you're at work and download from a DIY solution at home, you might only download at 10mbps. B) Services like dropbox will scale well beyond your home connection. Even if you have a 25up/25down connection at home, Dropbox will still be faster at your 50mbps work connection, because Dropbox will scale to 50mbps easily. Or 100mbps, etc. Something your home cannot do unless you pay more for bandwidth.... C) OK then, what if you just pay for higher bandwidth at your house? Well you could do that, yes, but if you're doing it for the sake of hosting your own cloud storage then why not just pay for cloud storage instead? D) If you have something like Google Fiber or a local fiber network in your city that is giving you 100/100mbps or 1/1gbps connections, then yes, your point is relative.
Can you make a tutorial on how to create an FTP server? I know that there are probably tons of existing tutorials out there, I just like yours better :)
I have a server at home, but don't need to, and I use BitTorrent sync. It basically give me unlimited space between my sync folder. Don't have to rely on other party. Work the same way dropbox or google drive work and it also have a android app. So this is how I use my cloud !!! By controlling myself, and it FREE !
Um... no. The Internet is the means by which computers communicate with each other. The cloud represents computing power and storage that you can rent. Not the same thing, dude...
***** Why would you link that? All it did was prove my point. Does not mean "the internet". The internet can exist without cloud computing. Cloud computing means multiple computers work together to render a service. You just don't get it. You're slow, not me.
@@karlslicher8520 internet is the network of computers made possible by the internet protocol. Cloud is a sharable VM on a big computing architecture. Totally different
I love cloud storage, I can access files anywhere but for gaming I choose computer rather than the cloud because of the latency especially during the hours of congestion
You could have explained it much faster: During an IT meeting regarding off-site storage and remote clustering some &$$hole looked at the network diagram and thought he would earn money by coining a new term and offering something which was never intended to be user-accessible as a new service model. "You mean it's all out there in that little cloud? Brilliant! We'll call it cloud computing!" Engineers refer to it as 'The WAN' or a remote network segment of undefined composition which may or may not be private.
How about elasticity? Instantaneous scalability? On-demand pay-as-you-go resources that you can release at will? Integration and interoperability between service providers eliminating duplicitous downloading and re-uploading of content though typically slow network connections? Automatic backup? Enterprise-class security and uptime? Ubiquity? Persistent access? Freedom from technological obsolescence?
Yeah do a public vs. private video. I'm interested because of the shared responsibility of ownership seems strange. I saw a chromebook with a low amount of storage, but they were offering a bunch of cloud space. So why would a normal person want to have somebody else hold all of their stuff for them?
I have a virtual server, they can run quite cheap if you shop around and it's awesome. I will however, hook up my external 1TB HDD to my MAME arcade system that i'm building just to keep all of my stuff backed up, good idea?
I prefer the personal cloud over the public one but I also don't like leaving stuff running whenever I'm not home so I still do the transfer bs from device to device XP.
Love to see a video that focuses on a private cloud, maybe even talk about encryption. Btw for anyone looking for more than 2GB of storage, go to mega.co.nz and get 50GB for free. They have servers in NZ, the EU and i guess the US as well
Sum it up the cloud - applications stored on servers that are accessible by end users from a terminal. Cloud is just a new name for internet or network that does not scare off the general public; mainly because they use the word with out knowing what it is. Where Cloud is going is to do the same thing as early/pre 80ies computing and I don't want to go back their - "server terminal" computing just sucks [imo].
Excellent explanation and description of cloud based services. I work for a large telecom provider who is moving towards cloud services. Many people in the organization still have a very limited understanding of the cloud computing concepts.
changes to a website actually take longer to appear in the cloud vs hosting a local web server. I don't know why would imply that this is a feature unique or better implemented in cloud computing when it is not. there are exceptions to the rule however if the cloud is compiling, installing, and running web application services but I do not think that was explained or a common use case for the beginners watching your video.

Here's a tip, stick to the ads at the start of the video. It keeps the viewer willing to watch to the end knowing they won't have to sit through another ad.
But if the ads are at the end, you can watch the video first, and then stop watching as soon as the ad comes if your not interested, a lot more convenient.
I know this comment is a little old though, if you really want to know, the easiest way to do it would be to go download BitTorrent Sync, install it onto any other device you have then on your computer where the files you want to access are located, then make a BTsync folder, share the key with the other devices and then copy/move the files you want to be able to access anywhere to that BTsync folder you made, that may have sounded a bit complicated but it really only takes about 10 minutes or so to setup, of course there is also the older FTP method where you run an FTP server and client but that takes some extra steps and messing with your router to be able to setup properly. (also if you if you prefer it, you could try owncloud, supposedly its pretty similar to BTsync but I haven't tried it yet.)
