Check out his recent work with Action Skulls. He was most recently a member of the Beach Boys touring band, and he is not ready to retire. Somebody hired this man!
Yes, check out John in the group Action Skulls along with Bill Mumy (Lost in Space) and Vicki Peterson (The Bangles). I just discovered Action Skulls, and they are great! Their music is quite eclectic, so many didn't sounds and styles. John drums and sings, Vicki is on guitar, and Bill seems to be quite talented on several different instruments. Great harmonies!
I am absolutely speechless !!!!! Bill’s vocals are mind blowing and then there’s little brother John showing aspiring drummers how it’s done. This should be seen by everyone. Let’s get this done PEOPLE !!!!!

Thankfully we can still enjoy his drumming and singing whenever we see the Beach Boys! I've been a fan of the Cowsills forever, they're such a talented family. And, after seeing their documentary, Family Band, I have a whole new respect for them.
Watching an 11 year old play drums the way John Cowsill did, and still does, proves what Ginger Baker said about drumming ability in the documentary "Beware of Mr. Baker." "You either have timing or you do not.It's a gift."
When the song begins the timing is ok, then around 0:12 it's a bit off... then, as the singer begins it takes them about .75 seconds to all be locking it 100% in sync. What a thrill!
When I was in grade school, someone asked our music teacher what the hardest instrument to learn was. Surprisingly, he said drums. You can't learn it - you either have it or you don't.
Don't take away from the hours of practice he put into that. Even as an 11 year old he will have had hundreds if not thousands of hours of practice. There is no such thing as a gift. You might have good arms, hands or general anatomy, but no-one is born with a gift. It has been proven multiple times (check the book "Bounce" as a reference).
That was an awesome cover of "Ill Be There" and they should have had a fire extinguisher close to him, I thought those drums were going to catch on FIRE !!! WOW
Damn, this family jams! Probably why they did many variety shows in the 60's and a TV series, "The Partridge Family", based on their career, which they refused to be a part of!

They actually did a medley of songs with each doing a solo as a introduction. From the same show they did "TRTPAOT" where he spun the drum sticks real fast. I seen it here on TH-cam today.
I love The Cowsills music and all of the songs they have sung and still sing the old hits in concerts ! Never saw them in person but it would be a dream come true ! I subscribe to every channel that has The Cowsills or Susan !
This was October of '67 and John wouldn't be 12 until March of '68, I've shown this to kids banging on the drums in their garage and have them guess how old the kid is and they are always years off. If you can't be nearly this good before your teens you may as well find something else because drumming won't be your thing. John was such a natural drummer. He really came alive doing it. I think the juxtaposition of this performance and the Christmas medley is very enlightening. John starts it off singing a rendition of "The Little Drummer Boy". He seems so shy compared to this a couple of months earlier. He does a good job with the song though. He was younger than the rest of his brothers and still had that adorable little boy button nose. Say what they will about Bud Cowsill he sired terrific musicians.
Its just a shame stupid ass Bud the father kicked Bill out of the Band. Just imagine if their parents were not jsckasses and Bill and Barry didn't pass and John wasn't with The Beach Boys. If they had good management and stayed the path it blows my mind how great they would be. I dream about that a lot. Bob and Paul have written so many good songs. I love their Global album. It rocks. I just saw that on a video the other day. I thought, wow, what an honor for the Beach Boys to show a video of John, as a kid drumming, during a Beach Boys concert! But then, the Beach Boys up and replaces John with another drummer this past Spring. Go figure.
Got to say it. Horrendous. I know these comments are like 10 years old but what a train wreck cover. I do enjoy some of the Cowsills but this is Reach Out, not Wipeout! Timing is terrible and the poor lead singer is struggling just to keep up. I give them credit but this is really bad. 😮

Ten-year-old John Cowsill was in Keith Moon spirit on those drums! The kid's definitely not holding back.
