  • The Gregory River in Queensland provides one of Australia’s best Free Camping places in Australia.
It’s in an amazing location situated right on a slow-flowing river where you can enjoy the features of remote camping in beautiful natural surroundings.
The tiny town of Gregory is an easy walking distance from the river.
With a population of just 70 people, it’s quiet, peaceful, and the gateway to the magical Lawn Hill National Park.
Gregory is located in the Burke Shire in Far North West Queensland.
From Burketown, it is 120 km south of Gregory.
It is approximately 235 km directly north of Mount Isa however, access by vehicle will take travelling greater distances.
There’s a rough gravel road west of Mt Isa, about halfway to Camooweal north from the Barkly Highway.
In Gregory, you will find the General Store, which is a great spot for a coffee and something to eat.
There is also the local Pub, the Gregory Downs Hotel Motel, where you can enjoy a beer and a steak, and they also have fuel available.
The town was originally named Gregory Downs, and the Gregory Downs Cattle Station nearby runs over 266,000 acres of land.
The town's name was changed from Gregory Downs to Gregory in 2013.
This is roughly a 310 km drive but will be slow and challenging in some sections.
To get there on bitumen, head East from Mt Isa to Cloncurry and make your way following the signs.
