I've worked in the data entry industry on personal injury. Not only does the government set the prices on CPT billing codes, treatment of ICD-9 injuries will get different billing codes for the same treatment procedure depending on the professional that does the treatment. For example orthopedic surgeons are qualified and licensed to do spinal manipulation but the billing code price is higher than that of a chiropractor for the same procedure. When the guild that lobbied the government sets the price in this manner people will still tell me with a straight face that this government interference is 'free market capitalism'. The reason insulin is so expensive is because the hundreds of thousands of professionals (chemists, pharmacists, etc) are not allowed to make it and sell it cheaply. It isn't even hard to make, just artificially scarce under the justification of safety. Handing over more control to these corporations through a 'single payer socialized medicine' bill will just give more exclusivity to the guild that has already been getting everything it wants for over a century. When insurance/pharma reps said 'managed care is here to stay' in the 90's at seminars they were serious about increasing their stranglehold on healthcare. To think congress will pass any bill other than the one these corporations will write is insanity.
