How to read music on the Mandolin - (Part 1) - For any player who has never read a note of music!

This is a little different to all my previous Free Lessons ... if you like it, find it useful and want to know more then let me know and I'll do a Part 2!
This lesson is for any mandolin player who can read tab, but has never read a note of music. I want to get you started on how you convert the dots on the page, into notes on the fretboard. We'll start with some pneumonic exercises to learn the note names, then we'll find where they are on the fretboard, and then finish with some simple examples.

I've been watching Mando lessons on TH-cam for six years. I've been playing mandolin and working on TH-cam lessons for about two years. In my opinion, this guy has the most thoughtful, thorough mandolin lessons on TH-cam. He focus seems to be to teach you fundamentals and how to put them into practice. The other guys just want to teach you fiddle tunes that probably won't impress your friends at all because they have no foundation.
Thank you so much for all your lessons. Especially this one. I've tried to understand music but today when I found your video it all made sense. I've just taken up the mandolin after 9years playing the ukulele and I love it. Again thank you.
Incredibly useful Mike . I would very much like you to do a series on this . I find so much music in standard notation and although I can work it out very, very slowly, there are many huge gaps in my knowledge. Thanks again

Notation does give a bit more information as to how a note has value, and how a measure is to be played, but it can be figured out by listening to a tune that one finds desirable to learn. Make a conversion map as mentioned below.
This was extremely helpful to me. I'm new to the mandolin (3 months). I was learning by ear but with some tone deficits in my hearing, I decided it would be great to learn the music. You helped me unlock some things I was struggling with!

Thanks Mike, more lessons on reading music would be very helpful. I've used the Tab system for a while now but it will be a big advantage to read music from the same sheet as other instruments are playing.

Brave to get stuck into teaching this.
It's my weak spot, and I've been told by many musicians to learn to read music. The thing is, I know what I have to do to learn how to read music but it takes such a lot of work and time, life seems too short, (and so many tunes to learn), to waste time learning music when Tab exists. Your video might just make me try.
Thanks James. It does take work .... but you could look at it this way: if there's a tune you want to learn and you can only find music, at least you would have the skills to convert it into tab, or learn it slowly, or write the note names underneath the music. So, you don't have to be an amazing sight reader of music, just have enough knowledge that you can learn a new tune. Cheers! Mike
@@MandoMikeLessons I actually did that with a lovely Paul Anderson tune ( th-cam.com/video/6CAsO-XOeJI/w-d-xo.html ) which the guys I have wee sessions with were playing. I only had the music so I had a long afternoon writing up tab for it. I did it but my brain hurt after it! :-)
Like other folks I have tried in fits and starts to learn to read music for mandolin, and started to make a concerted (no pun intended) effort last year. Whilst I didn't take much from this one, I am looking forward to the later ones, so hopefully you will continue this series

Hmm, those easy tunes make me cheat. I can remember them and don't have to read the note.
Am I right to assume that if there is a sharp on f.x. an F on the upper line, this is also valid for the line an octave below?
Yes, I get what you mean with the easy tunes .... maybe go on thesession.org and click on some random tunes, see how much of them you can work out?
Yes, you are correct, and this is another difficulty with music. The F# is written on the highest line, but it also means the F in the lowest space should also be played as F#. Another example of musicians wanting the page to look as neat as possible.

Make yourself a conversion (map) to figure out notation to tab, and tab to notation. Mandolin tab only works for mandolin and for a specific key. A key signature has zero sharps (or flats) which makes it the key of C major. One sharp is G major, 2 sharps is D major, 3 sharps is A major. Those 4 keys is usually all one needs the convert notation to tabs. Good luck
