Bjorn Daehlie just the greatest of all times, I always loved his way to race: always in the front setting his pace, no tactics, every race a pure show of power!
Gullgutten vår, gullgutten vår går i mål.

Great. Daehlie and Northug are apparently the only skiers in history who put everything into every race. Both do the "Daehlie collapse" after every race, no matter how short. Did you ever see Sixten Jernberg flop to the snow? Or Mantyranta? or Gunde? Or Ellefsaeter? Or Thorlief Haug? Or Sven Utterstrom?
It would probably look silly to them, but it was a different time. People used to stop multiple times during the long races to lubricate their skis, and at the start they even had mandatory rests because the physical exhaustion of a 50km race was considered to be dangerous! They would definitely be very impressed by the speed, though. Race times have shortened a lot since the old days.

And people say Legkov is a doper?? Daehlie, for the most part, dominated the world of cross country skiing in the 90's. Once Gunde Svan and Thomas Wassberg retired, he was next in line as the next best thing. He crushed the 'supposed' dopers of Russia, Italy, Finnland, Austria, Germany, etc. The Norwegians had plenty of races where they swept the podium. Alsgaard crushed the Lillehammer 30k. One of the more impressive xc olympic performances of all time. The Norwegians may have had good ski preparation, but it's not like the others were on wooden skis and bamboo poles. There is absolutely no way all of them were clean. Look at Hoffman in this race. His history and Austria's history of doping in endurance sports suggests it's highly likely he was doped in this race. He finished 3rd. He died a little in the closing stages of the race, but otherwise had an exceptional race. He was still beaten by two men. Where were the Russian men in Nagano? Prokurorov, who was their most consistent skier throughout the 90's had some decent results, but he was thoroughly beat in Nagano by the Norwegian's, Finns, Italians.
The norwegian are training wery hard. We have the best team and the best skies . If they have been doped , they had been taken. Remember it`s our sport . Nobody says nothing when the Kenyans are running fast
You underestimate the importance of ski preparation and how much of a difference it can make. This is a science today, but wasnt to the same extent back then. I read a few years ago that the leading producer, Swix -a Lillehammer-based company, made major breakthroughs in the early 90's and made sure that only their own countrymen got the best waxing products and techniques ahead of Lillehammer-94. They kept it such a secret that not even the norwegian women were given these products. And the norwegian women, unlike the norwegian men, were unable to compete with the italians and russians until much later, when they too got the new waxing products and the italians and russians were caught for doping. But doping doesn not explain how Alsgaard suprised in one race at Lillehammer, then to disappear into the background for the rest of the championship. However, him picking the better skis that day does.
sanjoy87 Oh my god, not this shit again. Do you know how many times I've heard that excuse? "Oh, but Norwegians just train better than everyone else, and they have better skis, and better nutrition..." Yeah, and apparently better asthma doctors as well!
