  • In this video, I will show you how to fix Java (Oracle JRE 1.8.0_221) to work with Dell's iDRAC6 (version 2.92 build 05) virtual console web start app. Please keep in mind, that the requirements to get this working may be version specific (both version of iDRAC6 as well as Java), but the general concept should apply.

I am so glad I found your channel yesterday - I'm just waiting for delivery of a Mikrotik 10G router / switch and learned a lot about the setup prior to it arriving and also have an R710 which I've just re-purposed and an IBM x3650 which I've modded to also include the SAS expansion board. Spent quite a bit of time catching up yesterday. Thanks for your content :)

Yet another wonderful video! Thanks for helping me access my Virtual Java console for iDRAC on windows 10. My java.security file was in C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.8.0_271\lib\security I also had to run notepad as administrator then open the java.security file in order to edit it an save it. I then went and forced windows to always open .jnlp files with Java Web Start. Wham bam! Bob's your uncle! Thanks so much.

II am happy to report: the same method works for older iLO. I removed all protocols from the list, except for MD2 and checked "Direct Connectopn" in Network Settings window. It is not the default Java on my system, so I care little about security in this matter. It's all behind a VPN and passed securely directly to the remote network anyway. Having access to console at reboot time makes a difference.

Also the native mode is possible without installing anything- only Internet Explorer, just edit security settings and youre good to go.

In 2022 this is still a problem. I wish someone could develop a self-contained Java emulator that will run these older JRE applications, or at least one specifically made as an IDRAC viewer. I saw someone mention below a similar concept for a Docker image, but I can't seem to find a simple explanation of how to use Docker images. I'm also not sure if Docker works on Windows, which is where I'm usually trying to view my IDRAC.
I've worked around this problem by installing an old, insecure version of JRE, but even then my 4k display doesn't properly scale the old IDRAC remote interface.

First, I think you need iDRAC 6 enterprise, not express, to have the remote console feature. So, if that's not a mistype, that might be your problem.
Also, I have found that OpenJDK gives me video problems and crashes vs Oracle JRE, so I might suggest using Oracle JRE if possible.

generally speaking, if you have the same version of Java/java web start, and iDRAC that I show in this video, the method above should work. if you haven't already, I recommend updating to the versions I show in this video as that should be pretty current at the time of this message.
