Man, I'm loving this series. I know you did one before a couple of years ago at the independent shop. That's how long I've been subscribed to your channel, Ray!
Almost like a real shop Ray! You've come a long way since the dealership days. It's been fun riding along with you and the family. Cheers from North Florida.
My first 15 years of auto repair education was holding the flashlight for my dad while he muttered in a Klingon type language. Ive learned more in two years watching Ray (and a couple of other good ones) then all the years prior.
Oh the PTSD I have from the verbal beating I got for not holding the light straight, in the correct spot, or didn't catch the 6 inch long ash from the cigarette that fell😂😂😂
By seven I knew how to set points and timing. I was the starter bumper to get it TDC but, my father also showed me how things were done. I also held the flashlight and would hear "can you see alright?" .Yep lol
This morning when I started watching this, I saw your little tin man oiler and thought to myself, "that would be handy to have!", and placed an order for one 😂 Watching you has cost me hundreds of dollar over the past couple years, because I see a cool tool or something you have, and just have to add them to my collection!
Hey Ray, I'm so glad that I found this channel. I always look forward to your cheery disposition...you're a great inspiration and I look forward to all your videos. Thanks for all you do.
It’s funny that some people think Ray doesn’t know what he’s doing and they have to put their stupid two cents in, but the guy has worked for dealerships in the past and he knows quite a bit about everything maybe once in a while if he’s never worked on it he’ll be a little stumped, but he will figure it out Ray is awesome 👏 👍
Hi Ray iam in Australia I watch your stuff all the time and I love the way you work and diagnose to the point of we use some of your vids at our trade school for teaching vids keep up the good work and vids m8
Rainman Ray, your one of the best mechanics I've ever seen. I have really enjoyed this series on this Ford engine overhaul. Keep em coming. You deserve a beer or something after all you did for that truck.
Ray, you should do a "Clear flood mode" on the engine before starting it for real to prime the system with oil after such an overhaul. Either with the gas pedal to the floor, or for the models that don't support that, pulling the ECM fuse so the engine can't start. Crank over for at least 60 seconds. Let the starter rest to cool, then prime with fuel and start. As for always using OEM parts setting off the comments section, it might be good to mention that OEM's use multiple suppliers that make parts for them under the Motorcraft etc. brand names so even though you can have all sorts of parts stamped "Motorcraft" they can actually be from multiple different suppliers. OE's do this all the time, so it's quite possible the brand of Phasers you are using are in-fact a supplier to Ford under the Motorcraft name usually along with selling their own house brand of the exact same part.
Just did this exact timing job on my 05 Wasn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be, but the engineers behind this engine need a little cranial percussive recalibration. Plus side is the engine is running better than it ever has since I've owned it
You should use something like a bungee cord to hold those hoses out of the way when working on the valve train. Helps to keep debris from coming off them and falling down into critical points and openings.
I enjoy watching all your video's with my morning coffee. Your shop is looking awesome and organized. I enjoy your professionalism also your attention to detail. Always waiting for the next video. You always make my day. 😃
Your shop is growing and GROWING! May God continue to bless you Ray with so much success! I still remember as a viewer, on your first day video of your new shop someone commented in a very mean way and you said "And you type too much" LOL!
So funny, I was wondering "What's Dave working on making all that noise?" A minute later your showing us the Mazda truck..🤣 I like the fact the Ford owner said replace it all. See you on #4 Ray, have yourself a great day!
Oh no, this poor engine will never be putted together again. It's all gone and the customer must have ANOTHER! Or maybe I'm just kidding 🤪 I know damned well that this engine is in the hands of a blessed mechanic, and that mechanic have a great humor. You can always learn something by watching those videos, and they are never boring. I really think that those videos are a highlight on a working day. Learn and Laugh. Keep on, Ray. I've followed you for a long time now, and still think you are one of the few really honest guys, knowing how some garages "work" here in Denmark.
I'm trying to tell you not to forget the rockers. You must have heard me at the last minute. I'm glad I have the 2V version of this engine. 182K so far with no issues. The only thing it needs is that oil filter/water outlet gasket replaced on the side of the block. I'll keep it until it or myself dies, whichever comes first.
Looking good! Nice to see an engine coming back together. Just a nitpick, but I would have coated the cam caps with oil before installing. Looking forward to the next episode, and waiting for the first startup! 😊
Nice job Ray. I check YT every morning for a new RRR new video. It’s nice to see your shop coming along. You’ve had a real shop from day one with the two stalls, unpainted walls, the hidden kitchen behind wall number three and the office AC glued into a hole in the wall with foam. It’s the people who make it a shop and you, the wife unit, Dave and……Justin? (Sorry for not being sure) are good people who make it real.
Hi Ray you’re a genius still watching excellent videos putting cam Assembly back on just loving it and as always you and wife unit and boys be safe 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Awesome job there Ray. This is so different than the 289 V8 I blew up back in the 70s, then replaced it with a 302 V8. Thanks to my brother in law it went smoothly because the internet was just being thought of!
Yeah but timing these you can't get it wrong, The old pushroud with an HEI or distributor you gotta use a light and or Time it by ear You gotta make sure your advanced weights are working properly, These are nice because you lineup your marks and it's done assuming you don't lock out your phases
I just did my truck last week and put the rockers in one at a time with the cams in using the little spring compressor tool. I was nervous about binding something up. By rocker #16 I was starting to get the hang of it. I used the melling kit. The phasers had curious grinding marks where the Ford part number would normally be.
Great "How to" video. I'm just about to start this job on a 2012 Ford Expedition with the 5.4L 3V with a 176,000 miles. I'm also using the Cloyes timing chain kit and Melling HF oil pump , but the Ford OEM cam phasers, hydraulic lash adjusters, roller rockers and VVT solenoids.
A thought I had years ago while working on a machine that was difficult to service because of the design. I would love to have the engineer in the shop for a month working on these things, and maybe they would take a second look at their designs before they put them into production. Of course, I also used to dream about always having an indoor, air-conditioned/heated environment whenever I knew I would have to work outside in terrible conditions.
My father was born in 1917 and fixed many machines from some of the first tractors on. His comment was often "The bastard who designed this never had to work on it." I'm with you 100%
Wery good job ! I am impressed !!! It is always a nightmare to remeber how all go togheter when the repair stretches ower several days , waiting on parts etc!!
And to think i was considering doing this to my f150. Glad i sold it honestly..... but i miss my truck.. /sadface. Good stuff man, much love from Texas!
The 2 valve tritons Excited before the 3 valves so the name trition had nothing to do with 3 valve engines Ray but funny pun 😂 11:00 @Rainman Ray's Repairs
Well we need Scotty to work on engines these days too. Two days just get the thing apart to put the new parts in. I hope I never have to have the oil pump replaced in my 22 after seeing what’s involved here.
Only the Chrysler V6’s have the photons. However Chrysler being Chrysler they tend to leak anti-matter into the lifters at around 100k. That’s why they shit their lifters almost like clockwork but hey they’ve only had since the 1980’s to figure that motor out…..
What a great video Ray.... Been enjoying the series a lot... Gives a very good perspective on why a Job like this is expensive. Despite the high mileage, that engine seems to have had frequent oil changes.... Please do a follow up on the Mazda!!
At this hour, it’s pp and Rainman sans coffee because I’m old and I had to get up to p, will watch a few minutes and go back to sleep.ill have coffee net time I wake up
Once again Ray, don't pay attention to these internet carryings or keyboard carryings or trolls or whatever you call them myself included. You do your work your way others do with work their way if they don't like it they can get over and can't they. Over 50 years in the business, now I'm retired but I don't think of other than rods and mains I would have done anything any different. Still enjoying your videos, and my coffee!
I know that I am Old, my first 3 Vehicles -1954 Chevy Belaire Coupe, 63 Falcon Sprint and New 72 VW totaled together barely went over $4,000. Times have really changed...
I paid $5K on a 2019 Ford F150 with 80K miles for a drive shaft, seals, gears etc, a rear end rebuild. All I had was a wining noise coming from the rear caused by a bad pinion bearing and crush sleeve. Well Ford changed parts in the middle of production and the older parts were no longer available. The newer parts could not mate with the older parts, they beefed up'ed the rear in mid production. This was not at a Ford dealer but a well known reputable shop that specializes in this area. Contacted Ford before authorizing repairs and they said have a nice day, said the same thing with the catalytic converter 5K out of warranty. Next truck WILL NOT BE a Ford, not cause of there vehicles but because of their lack of taking some ownership of my issues.
It does not matter any more, the manufactures have forgotten what customer good will is. Today, they are more concerned about hanging on to their dollars.
So you thought they should cover the catalytic converter that was 5k out of warranty? Next time you will want them to cover an item that was 5k out of 5k out of warranty. There has to be a cut off somewhere and it was 5k before your part went up in smoke. They didn't and don't owe you anything on an out of warranty part. Talk about taking ownership...
@@thk7513Same thing goes for the dealers. They wouldn’t give me XPlan on a 22 F150 even though I had bought 9 new vehicles off them in the past. Too cheap to give me what amounted to a 3 grand discount on a 54 grand truck. I had no trouble finding a dealer that appreciated my business.
I like the Wall of Viscocity. I also noticed that at the end of the video, your dudes got the rest of the shop empty of cars. You hired some solid mechanics.
While I enjoy this series, I hate how Ford once again has made working on their motor harder than needed . Space and position Ford . This maybe why people avoid going to a dealer for repairs . Time is money and dealers do charge a fortune . You are earning your pay with this rebuild Ray . Stay safe , have fun .
Amen, that is my favorite part of watching this. Knowing that I don't have to fight this job. Still interesting to watch though. I do have a 3.6 Camaro that growls a little at startup. Heaven forbid, I might get a taste someday.
@@buckhorncortez not an expert , never claimed to be . I am a Ford owner , I have an ‘06 F - 150 , and a ‘ 14 Escape Titanium Eco boost . So I am very interested every time Ray works on a Ford product. . My 2014 Escape requires me to remove my windshield wipers and the cover to change the battery , not loosen 1-2 screws and remove it. . They used plastic as a component in the motor to guide the timing chain . To me not great engineering.
After watching nearly all of your videos i feel like a mechanic. I like the use of all the Milwaukee tools. What about a video of the tools you are using? What tool do you choose for which use case?
Ray make a shirt with ...JUST ANOTHER...as can goes flying across shop....I Love It....also that shot of your daughter walking by with theme song from ... X-FILES is Awesome
enjoying these ones, as a diy'er, just doing a HG on a volvo d5 engine with all wheel drive, lots of stuff to come off, engine bay looks like bomb has gone off, never done a hg before, reassuring to watch these series vids.
Ray I too enjoy your videos. I only watch 2 mechanics on TH-cam. Dont let the keyboard warriors get in your head. They don’t have to watch. I appreciate your content. It’s helpful to me being a shade tree mechanic.
Interesting following this. I remember the one you did in your previous job, but you didn't remove the cams and replaced the lifters/rockers with a special tool. It may have been the 4.6, not sure. Looking forward to the next video, setting the chains up and buttoning up the engine & starting. Thanks for another great video. 😊
Finally a good use for that 0W ... stuff. I imagine that you'd use the thinnest oil you can find. Tempted to suggest ATF, but 0w-8 should be thin enough.
A little surprised you're not doing the plugs while it's wide open like that. This video series is going to save a DIYer's day many times in the future. Great work!
@@scottyV1000 Yep. On the 04-08 F150s you have to remove the battery and ECU like Ray did to get the back spark plug. And if the plug breaks off in the head it’s still tight.
I got to tell you, I am blown away on how entertaining and informative all of your videos are. You are amazing to watch. Thank you for all that you do to teach us little tips and tricks!
Wall of lubricious visual appeal. All labels oriented properly and caps aligned in rows. 😁 As crowded as engine bays are, I reflect back on the tangled nightmare when all systems were vacuum driven.
My son bought a 2010 f150. Made the timing chain noise but we were going to give it shot. Had one dead cylinder. But to our surprise was timing chain was fine. It had a broken valve spring. That was all. Shop had quoted previous owner 8000. For a new motor. Cost is about 20 bucks and our labor. Not to shabby for a 1100 dollars. Love your posts!!!!
Ray, you might want to advise the customer to change the oil a little more frequently on this engine. This will prevent varnish build up and help keep the timing components in good shape. Oil is cheap, repairs aren't. For goodness sakes please use a better oil filter than those installer Protec oil filters. Use something like the Carquest blue filters.
I suspect that a similar high volume oil pump is the solution for the Chrysler hemi's that don't tolerate idling. On this engine, the high volume pump will allow it to tolerate some wear on the bearings.
It’s been a pleasure watching you and “Wife Unit” grow your little business!

Nothing like creating a strawman problem so you can sound like an automotive expert...
Although you are doing an excellent job, I like to use Lukas assembly lube. It is super thick and sticks to the metallic surfaces better.
After watching nearly all of your videos i feel like a mechanic. I like the use of all the Milwaukee tools. What about a video of the tools you are using? What tool do you choose for which use case?
It's all good, Ray! 👍 awesome video once again! 😁
Ray make a shirt with ...JUST ANOTHER...as can goes flying across shop....I Love It....also that shot of your daughter walking by with theme song from ... X-FILES is Awesome
Just had this done to my 2010 expedition . She’s ready for another 150k. 4k job with third party parts is crazy !
Oooo, Cam Locker Tool 🏆
Looking forward to Part IV, "Return of the Timing Chain"
The Wall of Lube 😁
enjoying these ones, as a diy'er, just doing a HG on a volvo d5 engine with all wheel drive, lots of stuff to come off, engine bay looks like bomb has gone off, never done a hg before, reassuring to watch these series vids.
The shop is looking good!
Ray I too enjoy your videos. I only watch 2 mechanics on TH-cam. Dont let the keyboard warriors get in your head. They don’t have to watch. I appreciate your content. It’s helpful to me being a shade tree mechanic.
Great video Ray Man
Interesting following this. I remember the one you did in your previous job, but you didn't remove the cams and replaced the lifters/rockers with a special tool. It may have been the 4.6, not sure. Looking forward to the next video, setting the chains up and buttoning up the engine & starting. Thanks for another great video. 😊
I think you need to own that whole building you're in. Have a great day and a blessed weekend!
I expect Ray and Dave will expand towards an industrial complex and legacy like Dave’s Auto Center has in Utah. 👍
Finally a good use for that 0W ... stuff. I imagine that you'd use the thinnest oil you can find. Tempted to suggest ATF, but 0w-8 should be thin enough.
The wall is cool
Thanks Ray! Ive learned a lot from you!
Alwats praying for you and your beautiful family!
Wall looks great, and that old Mazda sounds awesome! Little bit of TLC goes a looooonnnnggg way.
A little surprised you're not doing the plugs while it's wide open like that. This video series is going to save a DIYer's day many times in the future. Great work!
I think the hardest thing working on pickups is just reaching things with engine covered in wiring and hose plus buried half way into the firewall.
@@scottyV1000 Yep. On the 04-08 F150s you have to remove the battery and ECU like Ray did to get the back spark plug. And if the plug breaks off in the head it’s still tight.
Good job on the rebuild
Excellent Video!!👍👍👍
It IS almost like a real shop! Keep up the good work!
Man. I feel like I'm now an expert on Ford Triton top end rebuilds! But I'm a bowtie guy.
Cloyes are the OEM supplier for the Ford timing components... :) - The only thing it's missing is the Ford QA/QC and Motorcraft PN.
The wall of goodies Looks awesome
Chain reaction .. for those about to rock.
I got to tell you, I am blown away on how entertaining and informative all of your videos are. You are amazing to watch. Thank you for all that you do to teach us little tips and tricks!
Wall of lubricious visual appeal. All labels oriented properly and caps aligned in rows. 😁
As crowded as engine bays are, I reflect back on the tangled nightmare when all systems were vacuum driven.
Looking forward to this one Ray 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇬🇧
those are big clicks from a small wrench ,thanks for the video
Looking good.
I need this done to my truck!!!! 2006 F150!! Wanna make another video!? 😅
