    I just bought the same sewing machine from Goodwill the other day and I plan on getting it cleaned up and in working order. It's missing the shuttle, the front slide plate, and a screw. When you have the machine tipped back you point right at the side of the arm missing the screw at 7:23. And of course it needs a new belt. I think that's it, but I won't know for sure until further inspection.
    Thank you for this video, it was very helpful!

    That bobbin is a reproduction, I just purchased ten on Ebay. The originals have much thinner brass discs that taper to the outer edges. At least they have pointed cones at the ends, unlike the Chinese ones that are more blunt. Some of the originals have a hole in one disc for the thread to go through thus holding it when the filling begins.

    Your video is very informative and sure answers many questions. Thank you so very much for the time you took to make this interesting and concise both at the same time.

    Bobbin winding @ 20:10 There WAS a lot of good information on oiling and good shots of different mechanicals. It's very clear that you have a working knowledge of the machine but you've not had specific training on its use. One thing I feel I must point out is the clutch on the inner part of the wheel should be disengaged before filling a bobbin so the needle is not active. Another thing that will help with the bobbin winding is a spacer that inserts into the right side of the winder; a tiny little piece of rubber or leather plug (though wading was probably used when the machine was new). As you found out, having the bobbin improperly wound leads to a major waste of thread. I think I will rewatch and get some other time stamps because I will be returning for more lessons on the construction and restoration.

      I give specific training lessons on all machines because I'm a millwright in a machinist... Safety is part of anything but whoever grounded down the point on the bullet bobbin as I call it, was trying to be a little bit too safe LOL.. I feel if somebody has lived and worked with any specific machine including motorcycle transmissions if you can work on one of these you can work on one of them just saying I spend my life on other mechanical endeavors and now I'm saying these are just as interesting and challenging and yes safety is important...

    I just restored my grandmothers sewing machine cabinet and got her machine set up. It looks like this exact same machine. This says that it is a 1908 machine. My 91 year old mom said that my grandmother purchased the machine back in the depression (1929 - 1933). Mom remembers walking several miles every payday to deliver a payment on this machine. I always assumed that her mother bought a new machine but now think she must have bought a used machine. I would like to know where to find the model listed. I would like to get a reproduction manual on this. Please add information on how to find both the model listing and the manual reproduction.

      35 years ago, I inherited my grandmother's machine. After 25 years of vacuuming the dust off of it, and never knowing how to use it, I gave it away. Now with information like this freely available, I give myself a big kick in the arse.
      I also gave away my mother's electric Singer. Kick me again.

    Hi and thanks for this very useful information. I've just acquired a 1886 Singer long bobbin machine that seems in quite good repair but my "bullet" shuttle case seems highly tensioned. That is, it's difficult to pull the thread through. Does the little screw need unwinding?

      @hawkes4372 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does. You need to unwind it in small increments until the shuttle case is tight enough to be held by the thread and not unwind the thread but loose enough that you can pull the thread through by hand

    I have this exact machine which I really love. I also ha a standard treadle machine late 1880s. It is so rare that I can't find anything on it. Anyway I was trying to fix the presser foot lever and I broke a little screw. I can't get it out. It's a beautiful machine as well. I broke it! Do you have any pointers on how to get the tiny screw out? It was original.

    I was gifted a machine from the late Victorian early Edwardian period but the bobbin winder is not working. The side that runs off the belt is stuck and will not move even after oiling

    I have the same machine , not quite as good of condition as yours tho. Sooooo I am cleaning this poor completely ceased little beauty up and I removed the feed dogs and the shuttle carrier to clean. as in my experience the feed dogs are usually completely gunked up. Any hoooo, now after replacing the parts I cannot get the shuttle in place. It is like the carrier is too elevated. What have I done?? Can you help? I really enjoyed your video...probably should of come across it before I bought this one...but I did want an challenge.

    I got a nice Minnesota A
    With 6 original bobbins, one was slightly shorter than the ones I use , I bet it's for a singer like yours?
    The Minnesota makes a different , SWEEP underneath.. I'm wondering if they will interchange and work..
