Very proud to have been part of the SADF when they were a force to be reckoned with decades ago. In many ways South Africa rewrite the weapons arena during the 1975-1990's with extraordinary developments!!
By 1987, South Africa decisively defeated Angolan and Cuban forces, tilting the conflict in favor of UNITA rebels. Concurrently, South Africa's gradual disengagement from its conflict with SWAPO who operated from Angola, followed Russia's withdrawal of support for proxy wars due to its transformation into a Federation. With perceived threats diminishing, South African forces returned home, initiating the transition to black-led governance under the ANC. However, mismanagement ensued as the ANC disbanded the formidable South African army, dismissing its skilled white personnel, leading to equipment deterioration. Why did South Africans disabled their howitzers and fled leaving FNLA and Portuguese mercenaries on their own to face a much stronger and better armed joint Cuban/Fapla artillery in Angola (battle for Luanda November 1975)?
@@QUINNEETHLING So I’ve been told. Still makes no sense at all. CIA financed a rag tag so called army, the FNLA, backed by the useless Zairean military, a few worthless British mercenaries led by a lunatic Anglo-Cypriot murderer and the only capable fighting unit there, the Portuguese volunteers, who had experience in fighting the war in Angola since all were ex-Portuguese army veterans. However they were too few to make a difference. South Africa provided much needed heavy equipment, namely their famous howitzers, but suddenly they turned back and left, and why still puzzles me.
By 1987, South Africa decisively defeated Angolan and Cuban forces, tilting the conflict in favor of UNITA rebels. Concurrently, South Africa's gradual disengagement from its conflict with SWAPO to the East followed Russia's withdrawal of support for proxy wars due to its transformation into a Federation. @@QUINNEETHLINGthe united states intervened and they diverted their 5th fleet. The entire war was a CIA operation in which the South Africans played a role. I HAVE A GOOD UPGRADE CONCEPT FOR THESE GUNS INCREASING FIREPOWER AND DECREASING MANPOWER NEEDS DURING PROLONGED FIRE MISSIONS. I DONT THINK GERALD BULL DID THE DESIGN FOR THE CARRIGE. HE WAS ONLY.INTERESTED IN ORDANCE DEVELOPMENT. HE WAS TO BIG AND EXPENSIVE.FOR THAT SH*T WORK.
It's not a self propelled gun. It's got an auxiliary engine to be used for positioning and such. Beats rousting the troops to put shoulder to the wheel.
@@montys420- Maybe to move the gun over to the gun tractor, but it would be stupid to plan to move the gun with a little putt putt. Russian artillery is so kak that you would need to scoot 20 kilometers to prevent getting accidently hit by the counter battery fire, so forget about using the putt putt for shoot and scoot.
How about focusing on platforms used in the Baltics and stuff that will potentially be used in the current war. I’d focus there for more relevant content and higher views.
The G5 was one of the earliest incarnations of the field howitzer pattern that has come to dominate artillery design in the west since the 1980's. This makes it historically significant.
Different tools for somewhat different jobs. At 14 tons the G5 is,... chunky. this has always been one of its big problems. At a bit over 4 tons the M777 is positively svelte. You aren't ever going to sling a G5 under a helicopter for example. Turkey for a few years produced a Gerry Bull derived L52 towed howitzer based on Singapore's version of the GC45/G5/GH-N-45 platform. Then they figured out _hey, this thing is freakin heavy. Lets just mount it on the back of a truck instead_ and stopped building the towed gun.
it still is in the limelight, infact, good artillery systems have a force multiplier today since they dont have to go high - calibre saturation fire mode to guarantee effect. the drone spotted recon makes it much more effective today.
Pretty ignorant to say that. See how much tracked artillery or MLRS resupply you can sling under a helicopter or stow in an amphib assault ship...even better yet, see how long it takes to transport those ashore. Compared to MLRS, let's see how much direct fire you can manage, or shift fire. You sound like someone who reads a few books, saw a few YT videos, and played some games and calls that knowledge. No, it doesn't deserve to be called pre-eminent, but still it's incredibly useful. If I were forced to choose to only have one type in inventory, it'd be towed over tracked or MLRS...better to have all three.
Air lift by helicopter ... Says not always.. plus this can relocate itself quickly and far enough to avoid counter fire or exposing the Tow support vehicles.. Besides I think a variant of the gun ended up in the Rhino 🦏 SPG.
The sandf still maintains 100 of them. A handful received upgrades alongside about 20 G6's a few years ago. We're the only country outside of germany that is authorised to produce the assegai artillery ammunition for NATO standard artillery systems. Denel is ahead of schedule to deliver R1.1 BILLION worth of these assegai ammunitions types to the EU. The assegai system was successfully tested in both its development periods and on the battlefield by Ukraine we're it reached ranges of 70km plus with effective impact range of around 10 metres. Make no mistake that the CIA was pulling the strings in that conflict
With perceived threats diminishing, South African forces returned home, initiating the transition to black-led governance under the ANC. However, mismanagement ensued as the ANC disbanded the formidable South African army, dismissing its skilled white personnel, leading to equipment deterioration. Today, the South African army struggles, having failed to produce any notable weaponry for the market-a stark testament to the corrosive impact of corruption
@@QUINNEETHLINGthe united states intervened and they diverted their 5th fleet. The entire war was a CIA operation in which the South Africans played a role. The idea was to win a war, not win a battle that would enrage a superpower. You needed to be there mate. I saw SA infantry troops screaming with rage when the pull-back call came. Luanda was for the taking, but strange things happens in proxy wars
20km's?
If I remember correctly it was a shipment of these guns on a freighter that was nabbed by U.S Customs and that got DR. Gerard Bull in hot soup.
Seemed obvious that they referenced this gun in the movie “Doomsday Gun”.
@0:54 "Began massive conventional raids into South West Africa"? Really?
SWA was a territory under South Africa, they did not have to carry out raids into SWA, get the history right.
Yes they did
@@BigDaddyButthead90 That means by your analogy, they carried out conventional raids in South Africa.
The SADF only used the G5 in Angola in battle.
This artillery was loved a lot by iraqi trools
There is a connection between this gun and the mega gun Iraq was building.. check out bio of James Bull
IRAN HAS SWEDISH BOFORS FH 77B.
16 ton, no that M777 titanium bs.
It works
Same as used in G6.
hahahahahahahah
A gun "working" is just the ante. Infants like you talk firepower. Experts know that military operations are all about logistics.
LISTEN TO HIM. STILL SOME OF THE BEST. IT IS FAR FROM BEING ONE OF THE BEST. DOESNT PLACE IN THAT CATEGORY ANYMORE. WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE.
South Africa
Wanna bet they were used in Mozambique?
The Sadf surrendered unconditionally to a terrorist outfit without firing a single shot.
Wrong , the traitor de klerk fired our generals and lied to the people to establish a one man one vote system with the help of the world , the white South Africans was betrayed within .
Betrayed by FW de Klerk and Pik Botha. Destroyed a first world country and turned it into a shithole under the Anc government in the short period of 30 years of corruption and mismanagement.
Sorry, auto-correct “Bulls”
Is this the same gun used in the G7?
The G7 is 105mm
@@WeaponDetective OH, yes! I was thinking of the G6 SPG
100 klicks at 16kph sounds like an awful road trip.
And yet it is a TOWED artillery piece!
It's not a self propelled gun. It's got an auxiliary engine to be used for positioning and such. Beats rousting the troops to put shoulder to the wheel.
There's a version called the G6 which is self propelled and armoured.
Allows for limited shoot and scoot though
@@montys420- Maybe to move the gun over to the gun tractor, but it would be stupid to plan to move the gun with a little putt putt. Russian artillery is so kak that you would need to scoot 20 kilometers to prevent getting accidently hit by the counter battery fire, so forget about using the putt putt for shoot and scoot.
Sadly all international sales were blocked by the US and NATO countries . I’m sure Saddam bought a few .
The footage they are using is old as hell…
Son of 88mm
How about focusing on platforms used in the Baltics and stuff that will potentially be used in the current war. I’d focus there for more relevant content and higher views.
The G5 was one of the earliest incarnations of the field howitzer pattern that has come to dominate artillery design in the west since the 1980's. This makes it historically significant.
better than US's M777
Different tools for somewhat different jobs. At 14 tons the G5 is,... chunky. this has always been one of its big problems. At a bit over 4 tons the M777 is positively svelte. You aren't ever going to sling a G5 under a helicopter for example.
Turkey for a few years produced a Gerry Bull derived L52 towed howitzer based on Singapore's version of the GC45/G5/GH-N-45 platform. Then they figured out _hey, this thing is freakin heavy. Lets just mount it on the back of a truck instead_ and stopped building the towed gun.
Towed artillery has had its day
it still is in the limelight, infact, good artillery systems have a force multiplier today since they dont have to go high - calibre saturation fire mode to guarantee effect. the drone spotted recon makes it much more effective today.
If I were forced to choose to only have one type in inventory, it'd be towed over tracked or MLRS...better to have all three.
ukranians seem to want more of it
Air lift by helicopter ... Says not always.. plus this can relocate itself quickly and far enough to avoid counter fire or exposing the Tow support vehicles..
Besides I think a variant of the gun ended up in the Rhino 🦏 SPG.
It has local mobility under its own power which makes it quicker move than traditional towed artillery, 2mins to set up or move

The G-5 was only successful in SADF hands. The sandf isn't fit to make coffee for them.
Stupid apartheid apologists poes
@mybru1 you're damn right I'm an Apartheid apologist. It wouldn't matter if your G5s and G6s had black panthers vibranium, shit troops mean that they're worthless. I've no doubt you'd fit right in.
@@mybru1 And? What use is all that if the troops are crap?
Yea it would be ricoffy
In the Gulf War, the US were shitting themselves as Iraq had our artillary and they could not match it.
Extremely lucky for them, the Iraqui army were clueless, like the SANDF in fact.
There could have been a totally different outcome if they had knowledgable and efficient operators.
