Every time I hear this song, I am right back at WIOQ in Philly. It's a Sunday night in 1978, and Gene Shay turns to me and says, "listen to this...you'll love it." It's just as powerful today. Thanks, Tom...and you too, Gene.

I'm in Atlanta in nursing school...forget the station, its late 1970s. I saw a lot of old country concerts in that town.

For me, it was the fantastic KTCL in Ft Collins, Colo.....late 70's...true free form radio.

I heard Waits do this live back in the early 1970's. He was on the bill with The Mothers of Invention. I had never heard of him before that. He put on such a great show, just him, his guitar and his storytelling.

This is one of the great truck driving songs/stories.....it was recorded by Red Sovine....but it was written by Tommy Faile out of Charlotte North Carolina....T ommy was a well known entertainer in the Southeast......

This take me back to my college radio days (Daze?) 1994 Bozeman Mt KGLT, Halloween. Trying to mix spoken word art with radio broadcast, this was a favorite.

Serious semi truck...Little known classic. I remember the old days thumbing a ride and meeting the old timers who would put on the air brakes and introduce themselves while ya smoked up all thier Viceroys....

when I hear this song...im haunted.....I go to the corner store and get a pack of unfiltered camels. I take and drink of whisky and light the camel. The flavor of the two mix together and it is so delicious. better than food.....Im where Im supposed to be...in some film noir where the guy is driving at 2am down a rainy hiway...desperate...about...well I don't know.exactly because the feeling is more important than the plot.....is there some woman out there that will take a shot of gin...light a cigarette...then kiss me...get your lipstick on me......John

I recommend that you check out the author by the name of James Ellroy who wrote L.A. Confidential, The Black Dahlia and The Big Nowhere; they are about as nior (sp?) as you can get.

Great cover by Tom, but give credit where credit is due. Tommy Faile wrote the song, and Red Sovine made it his own. I’m sure Tom heard Red’s version.
