In the end, Ted's homophobia and self-loathing towards his homosexual self caused him to lose his fiancée, Nicole, to lose any chance of being happy with Cotter, and get him skull damage that will impair his life until the end.
He didn't fake a disease. On the contrary, he was willing to go through conversion therapy with electro shocks in order to get married, which had side effects due to a congenital illness that got triggered.
To all those confused about the ridiculous lengths they go to solve cases: the premise of the show is "Sherlock Holmes as a doctor". House is Holmes, and the mystery diseases are the unsolved crimes. It's pulp fiction, not realism.

Perhaps he was homosexual but hetereromantic and he truly did love his fiancee but still felt sexual attraction to men. Because it sounded like he really did want to get married to her.
He had a congenital disorder that was triggered by the electro-convulsive therapy that Teddy went through as part of his conversion therapy.
