  • So this week was my MOT and I noticed a week ago a rattle started on the rear of the car going over speed bumps or uneven ground. After inspection I found the rear driverside spring to be borken so this is me replacing it.

    Mazda 5 owners! This video is absolutely correct as the mount commonly needs replacement. If that does not solve your problem take a look at the brake retention clip. It is likely your emergency brake line is not secured and is hitting something inside the wheel well. If that doesn’t fix it also check the rear bumper support bars as the plastic from the bumper can hit the inner wall of the car frame if your bumper was ever loosened by someone hitting it or sitting on the back bumper. Thank you for posting this video!

    Just looked under my 2006 Mazda 5 noticed when I press the brakes the rattles stops almost completely. I then checked the brakes and then pounded on the springs. Searched on the web and found your video. Thank you!
    By the way. I already replaced my whole suspension and sway bar bushing. This will be my next and last project for this car.

    Seems to be exactly what's happened on my Mondeo estate. Rattle rattle. The garage had a look and said it was the exhaust knocking, so they fitted new bushes and rattle rattle. They've had a pull and push while I watched and found a broken cross-member bolt head. The springs looked intact, but I'm convinced it's just like yours; broken down in the cup, so you can't see it. As you say, the ride height isn't altered. The broken bolt isn't good, but that's a heck of a job to sort out. But, I now have a seat of rear springs, and that's this weekend's job..
    Thanks for the video.

    Be extremely careful when working with springs and compressing them. There is a lot of stored energy there that can release quite violently should something go wrong. And jack-stands are your friend.

    Thanks for the video. Similar set-up on my Mondeo Mk3 Estate (non-levelling). It's a hassle using the spring compressors though. To take the old spring out, I just chopped it in half with an angle-grinder and a thin-disc, once I was sure it wasn't under any tension.

    There’s a serious problem with the design/quality of those rear Mazda springs. I’ve had to replace mine 3 times in 200km. Compare that to my previous GM vehicle that never had the rear springs replaced in over 200km. Btw, replacing those rear springs without removing the rear links as well (if you don’t have a spring compressor) is impossible and, as the rusted links do not remove easily it will require an angle grinder and new links.

    How many miles does your 3 have? Spring just went on our 5 at 80k. Probably going to swap both at the same time to make sure both sides ride the same height and behave the same. One very leaky shock too, will get both of those swapped too. Hoping all parts will be less than £160. And hopefully only a couple of hours' labour.

      Andrew Coomber I am really glad you found it helpful, it's got 91k on the clock at the moment. The other spring went about a week after the video so both done now but at the time the parts place only had one in stock, it did for the mot though. Front springs and all shocks seem OK so far. Next for the mazda is probably discs and pads all round.

  • @Macky1101
    @Macky1101 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    AT 3:35, there is a nut on the left side of the camera view. You need to loosen that nut (unless you already did, and I didn't see) so you don't have to compress the spring.

    • @Graham_Langley
      @Graham_Langley 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Problem is that bolt sets the rear wheel alignment. The manual says to just disconnect the anti-roll bar link from the lower arm and then remove the outer bolt as here.

    • @darkherostar
      @darkherostar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Graham_Langley yes. a bit late on this response. But I saw in another video they just removed the top bolt of the rear sway bar end link. That way there would be more looseness when the lower arm is then pushed downward. It should allow enough gap to barely need the use of the spring compressor device he was showing. So it should make getting the spring out and in easier.

    • @Graham_Langley
      @Graham_Langley 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@darkherostar And now it's my turn: I've not done this on my '06 - I only discovered it this morning - but it occurs to me that if you do both sides at the same time you won't be fighting the anti-roll/sway bar.

    • @dickoR33
      @dickoR33  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If its bouncy that normally points to rear shocks needing replacing, try with the boot open to bounce the rear end with your weight it should come up and settle almost immediately but if it bounces or takes a while to settle it points the the shocks absorbers.
