I have very important files in my HP Laptop and they will be gone forever.
I can't find the Bitlocker key because Windows was already installed in the laptop when I bought it on Best Buy. They don't have it neither. Whoever in Microsoft have think this was a smart idea... (lock off everything after an update)... should receive a Gold medal for stupidity.

Absolute garbage if we’re being completely honest. Just had to factory reset my PC and now will have to manually reinstall and reactivate every app I was using. Forget the countless important files I for sure lost due to a Windows update fault.
How about getting the user to be aware of this security key and to have them save it somewhere when they FIRST set up their device instead of them being unable to locate something they never set up themselves to begin with.
and looking around online, this exact issue has been around as early as /018 from what I could find.
    Unbelievable

This feature is very inconvenient to non tech-savvy people like myself and I am desperate to find any solution to this issue.

It looks like you (MS) might still be monitoring this TH-cam post. I have a Surface Pro X tablet that I was updating with Windows updates. Some Windows update seems to have activated Bitlocker. The blue screen clearly shows the Recovery Key ID passcode (764FD703-4606-4DE3-85B6-1661E3DAA285), but neither of my MS Accounts (both Regular and Admin) show this Device despite it being connected to my Organization. I understand that the Recovery Key ID can be used to link to the unique recovery key, but I cannot find any MS links to a page that you can enter the Recovery Key ID. Why show us a Recovery Key ID when it cannot be used to recover the Bitlocker Recovery Key?

Hi there! We'll do our best to help you figure out the account that your BitLocker key is associated with.

Hello there, Sanowar. Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. We appreciate your patience and effort in this matter, as the wait for the code will undoubtedly test your patience, and we are certain that this is not the experience we want you to have. Let's see what we can do together to solve this.
Your response was directed to our post about locating your BitLocker recovery key, which can be linked to one of your email accounts (personal, work, or school) and used when the device is first set up. You mentioned that you didn't receive any code when attempting to log in; does this mean that the account you're trying to access requires a security code to be sent to one of your security information, such as your recovery email address or phone number, in order for you to log in successfully?
If this is the case, the server's verification message may be delayed due to poor network reception, the carrier's network being unavailable, or an intermittent internet connection. To best assist you, we'd like to confirm the following information:
      1. Which option you've selected to receive a code? Is it your registered recovery email address or mobile number/phone number?
      2. Were you able to ensure that you selected an accessible piece of security information or entered it correctly when required in order to receive a security code?
      3. Is the @accountprotection.microsoft.com domain already marked as a trusted sender (if you used your recovery email address to receive a code), and is the Microsoft sender not blocked to your mobile number (if you chose to receive your code via text message)?
      4. Have you checked to see if the device you access your security information has a stable internet connection or signal reception to receive your code?
We'll wait for your response. Thank you. -Gen

Hi! Thank you for reaching out, and we apologize for the delayed response. We understand that you need assistance to open your D drive as you lost the BitLocker recovery key, and you're having an issue logging into your Microsoft account as it got blocked. Rest assured that we'll do our best to help.
To give you some insight, Windows will require a BitLocker recovery key when it detects an insecure condition that may be an unauthorized attempt to access data on the drive. This extra step is a security precaution intended to keep the data safe and secure. Some changes in hardware, firmware, or software can affect the secure boot process, triggering BitLocker Device Encryption to lock, protecting the device, and prompting the customer for a decryption key. We'd like to take a closer look into this, so we can assist you accordingly.
      • Is it a company or personal device?
      • Were you asked a BitLocker key when you turn on your device or open your D drive?
      • Any changes made to the device before the issue started?
      • Which Windows version is installed on your device?
      • How did you obtain your device? Was it bought from an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) or pre-owned from a retailer or reseller?
      • Regarding your Microsoft account where your BitLocker key might be saved, can you type in the exact error message showing that it's blocked?
      • Do you have any security information linked to the account, such as a phone number or email address? Do you still have access to them?
      • Is two-step verification enabled?
      • May we know if you have already tried filling out the account recovery form? If yes, what was the result? This will help us focus on things that he hasn't tried yet.

      Hello, Suppatai.
We got your comment. We understand that you are trying to recover your BitLocker recovery key for system access, and you have checked the website and even reached out to your IT at work, but they didn't have the key. We truly appreciate your effort in trying to recover it. Let us look into this, and we'll do our best to help.
For your reference, Windows will require a BitLocker recovery key when it detects a possible unauthorized attempt to access the data. This extra step is a security precaution intended to keep your data safe and secure. This can also happen if you make changes in hardware, firmware, or software that BitLocker cannot distinguish from a possible attack. In these cases, BitLocker may require the extra security of the recovery key even if the user is the authorized owner of the device. This is to be certain that the person trying to unlock the data is authorized.
We'll ask a few questions to diagnose this.
      1. Are you using a personal or company device?
      2. What exact message are you getting?
      3. Have you made any changes to the device before having the issue? Such as a BIOS update or hardware replacement.

Thanks for sharing the information we requested. Let's continue to sort this out
For your reference, Windows will require a BitLocker recovery key when it detects a possible unauthorized attempt to access the data.
There are hints on the screen that you can use to help recover your recovery key. You can try the following methods to retrieve your BitLocker recovery key:
      1. If you have a Microsoft account, you may be able to find your recovery key by logging into your account on another device and going to this link: msft.it/6015indPB. If the device was set up or BitLocker was turned on by someone else, the recovery key may be in that person’s Microsoft account.
      2. If you printed your recovery key when you activated BitLocker, you may be able to find it among your important papers related to your computer.
      3. If you saved the key as a text file on a USB flash drive, plug the drive into your locked PC and follow the instructions.
      4. If your device is connected to a domain, ask your system administrator for your recovery key.
For reference on the above information provided, you can also visit this support article: msft.it/6016indP8.
We hope this helps you recover your data.

Hi, Ayesha. Thanks for reaching out. We understand that when you try to access the BitLocker website, you're getting an error message. This is a currently known issue, but don't worry, our engineers are already working to resolve this issue. For now, here are the workarounds you can do: Please take note that you should try following them in order, and if the first one doesn't work, proceed to the next one:
      1. Try accessing the recovery key at msft.it/60599gPSV.
      2. Try accessing the link on a different device, such as a phone, laptop, or desktop.
      3. Try accessing the link on different browsers like Chrome, Edge, etc.
      4. We suggest waiting 24-58 hours and trying again because of possible Microsoft Account Server issues.
      5. Try to connect to a different internet connection, like mobile data.

Hi there! Let sort this out. We see that you have a concern in accessing your computer due to BitLocker. We need to gather additional details in order to isolate the issue and to determine the right solution. Please provide the following information:
      * Are you getting the BitLocker prompt when you open the device?
      * Have you made any changes on your device prior to this issue, such as installing an update or software?
      * Do you own the device, or was it company-provided?

Thanks for sharing the details. We are committed to protecting the data on your drive and keeping your sensitive information secure. If BitLocker detects unauthorized access or hardware changes, it will prevent access to the drive. Without the recovery key, access to the drive is impossible.
Please check your Microsoft account again or any other accounts you might have. You might also find the key on a printout or a flash drive. Note that Microsoft cannot provide or recreate a lost BitLocker key. If you cannot locate the recovery key, you will need to reset your device, which will remove all your files. Please know that a Windows recovery key is a 48-digit code that is used to unlock a device that has been encrypted with BitLocker, a device encryption feature of Windows. There are different ways where you can locate the Windows recovery such as to your Microsoft account, on a print-out, on a USB flash drive, etc. See this link for your reference: support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/finding-your-bitlocker-recovery-key-in-windows-6b71ad27-0b89-ea08-f143-056f5ab347d6#:~:text=In%20your%20Microsoft%20account%3A%20Sign%20in%20to%20your,For%20more%2C%20see%20Device%20encryption%20in%20Windows%2010.
