Tony Randall introduces the late-great Laurie Beechman who leads the cast with Bill Hutton in the curtain call from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
I had the extreme honor to meet Laurie backstage when she performed at a NYC club. Her mother was with her that night and the two were just extraordinarily nice people. I fell in love with Laurie the first time I heard her singing on the recording of Joseph, and when I saw that she was appearing in NY I ran down to the city to see her perform. All the club had left when I got there was a bar stool and I gladly paid the regular price for the seat. Laurie had such talent matched with an amazing personality. Her voice could go from whisper soft to blow out the windows. And on top of it all, she was so beautiful. When I heard that she passed I was heartbroken. I still choke up listening and watching her here. We lost not only a magnificent star but a most beautiful person. I'm sure that the angels are being well entertained up in Heaven with Laurie, but we lost her way too soon. Will always love you.
The 90’s filmed performance starring Donny Osmond sent me here. I lived 29 years on Earth, been a fan of Broadway since Wicked and don’t know what a classic I’ve been missing out on.
The Cast Joseph - Bill Hutton Narrator - Laurie Beechman (RIP) Jacob - Gordon Stanley Potiphar - David Ardao Pharaoh - Tom Carder Brothers - Robb Hyman, Ken Bryan (RIP) Steve McNaughton, Charlie Serrano (RIP) Peter Kapetan (RIP), David Asher Richard Hilton, Doug Voet, Barry Tarallo Philip Carrubba, Stephen Hope Chorus - Lorraine Barrett, Karen Bogan Katharine Buffaloe, Lauren Goler, Randon Lo Jonni Masella, Kathleen Rowe-McAllen, Renee Warren
I remember hearing the ad on the radio in 1985 and when my best friend heard me sing the tune what I remembered from when I was 3, she told it was Joseph and the technicolor jacket I thought wow cool!
I just saw this show again on 3/30/2014. I first saw it on my birthday back in 1995. This was the Canadian cast with Donny Osmond. He was Joseph, and Janet Metz was the narrator. I recently saw this show again on 03/30/2014. Diana Degarmo was the narrorator....and she was PERFECT! She could hit those high notes like no one else. This show is timeless, and the 2014 version of the narrator....who has the biggest part.....is the best singer this role has ever seen.
It's such a shame they didn't record the entire production. I know that usually wasn't done but it would have been nice to have all of Laurie's performance.
I remember when it was showing at the Palladium in London in 1993 - all the posters for the show allround London were advertising it as 'Day Trips To Egypt'
As a British person I had never heard of Laurie Beecham’s version, I had only heard of Linzi Hately and Maria Friedman. I absolutely love Laurie’s overall presence, she looks like she’s enjoying the singing and she gives of such a positive aura.
Good medley -- the got pretty much every good song in there. "Go Go Jospeh" is my fave that one is so catchy. The costumes were really dated compared to recent productions, however.
It was red and yellow and green and brown and blue - because I forgot to use 'colour-fast' - the detergent that keeps your clothes the right colour !!!
I went to high school with Laurie Beachman. No one doubted she’d be a star. Her dog Hamlet bit me when I was 15 and my dad said I could sue their insurance company to get plastic surgery. I chose not to, knowing Laurie would be a huge success.
This was the written curtain call. The show itself is rather short - under 90 minutes so this was written to give the audience a little more for their money.
i performed this show in my middle school last year... everyone in the production hated it. it was the first repeat of a show (10th anniversary) needless to say, the 4 Stars (the kids who did drama from 5th-8th grade) were not happy. there was only like 4 lead roles so the rest of the people who normally would have received a role we’re put in as brothers and their wives (i was a wife- a severe step down from my lead as Lola in Damn Yankees the year before)
can't be the lead in every production....the ensemble can make or break a show...an enthusiastic, talented ensemble makes it awesome...an unenthusiastic one kills it no matter how good the leads are...be grateful for every show you get cast in bc there's always something to learn...humility is one of the lessons...if directors see you happily accept ensemble and do your best in it, they remember...if they see you as having sour grapes bc you weren't the lead, they remember and won't cast you again.
I think they all look fake and plastic. The female lead is a great singer with incredible energy, but I’m really glad not to be there to watch it. It feels like being attacked by smiles.
Every time I watch this I'm just in awe of Laurie Beechman. Not just that belt, but also how joyful she looks doing it!
thenet She’s so hot
@@willingsubject389 "She's so hot" is not a compliment. Try again.
Sunshine She’s smoking hot , she’ll probably burn down the bloody building with how hot she is .
Sunshine she’s hot is a compliment your a jealous cat lady man hater.
She's not wearing a belt.
I love how the Narrator looks so utterly delighted to be there.
RIP Laurie - She was a lovely lady.
I had the immense pleasure of seeing her in this show. What a powerhouse performer. RIP Laurie Beechman.
She was, Laurie loved nothing better then to be on stage and bring joy to everyone's life..
I wish I had been able to see and hear more of Laurie Beechman....she was sucha talent taken too soon!
She just sung that shit outta that number!

Seeing Bill Hutton here, from my home city of Evansville, gives me hope to one day perform on Broadway despite coming from southern Indiana.
this is just DRIPPING with early 80s/late 70s cheese. I love it. Lol
+Surreal469 Me too!
Reminds me of Doug Henning and Did Conn in "The Magic Show".
1970-1980 where they ALWAYS went out into the audience in at least one show....
WOW Laurie is belting up a storm here!!
The 90’s filmed performance starring Donny Osmond sent me here. I lived 29 years on Earth, been a fan of Broadway since Wicked and don’t know what a classic I’ve been missing out on.
Ms. Beechman was an EXTRAORDINARY talent!
Makes me sad because many of those people are no longer with us. Even Laurie Beechman.
sad she left us from cancer....others are gone?
Great show, always a classic. Most fun musical I ever ran.

I was a kid when I heard and saw this. I was totally in awe of Laurie Beechman. And decades later, I still am. Man, she is the best.
I loved this show. It's due for a revival.
New national tour is going on right now..
Christopher Garcia it sucked
yes!!
It’s never finished in the UK!
Rumor has its coming back to Broadway in 2023
Laurie is phenomenal
***** She died in 1998.
@@musicaltheatergeek79 And yet here we are, enjoying her timeless and eternal talent. Aren't we lucky?
Correction: Laurie WAS phenomenal!
I remember hearing the ad on the radio in 1985 and when my best friend heard me sing the tune what I remembered from when I was 3, she told it was Joseph and the technicolor jacket I thought wow cool!
Brilliant!!...Love the 80's!...
Laurie, killing it.

Fun fact: one of the women in the ensemble cast is Jodi Benson. Who went on to voice Ariel in 'The Little Mermaid' a few years later.
No way
I love this musical so much.
DAMN she can sing
Hell yeah.
I'm so glad I got to see this on Broadway with the original cast. Bill Hutton was a great Joseph.
Does ANYONE have a recording of the 1982 Broadway version in full?
And damn, Bill Hutton's hair. Feathered to within an inch of its life!
I Wish I could find it too my uncle is Charlie plays Levi
Actually, your late uncle Charlie played Naphtali. P.S. 1952-2015 (Sorry for the loss)
The American cast is, in my opinion, the best production of all, starting with the best singer Laurie Beechman
It's such a shame they didn't record the entire production. I know that usually wasn't done but it would have been nice to have all of Laurie's performance.
That show was always an acid trip.
I remember when it was showing at the Palladium in London in 1993 - all the posters for the show allround London were advertising it as 'Day Trips To Egypt'
Thanks so much for posting these videos . Please keep them coming.
As a British person I had never heard of Laurie Beecham’s version, I had only heard of Linzi Hately and Maria Friedman.
I absolutely love Laurie’s overall presence, she looks like she’s enjoying the singing and she gives of such a positive aura.
1:24-1:40 Quite a long note.
16 seconds.
Thanks for posting, MrPoochsmooch.
I saw this cast when they came to the Sanger Theater in New Orleans back in the 80's
THAT WAS SENSATIONAL. LAURIE CARRIED IT OFF SO WELL.
At 5:28 I spotted the actress, Ruth Gordon, in a yellow outfit. She was all smiles! Great show!
Well damn, Laurie!
Donny Osmond nephew David starred in Joseph and was his uncle's understudy.
joseph and the Amazing techincolor Dreamcoat 82 tonys
Tonys : So which song would you like to perform from your new show?
Andrew Lloyd Webber : yes
Tonys : .......
Many musical stars have starred in Joseph,David Cassidy, Patrick Cassidy, Micheal Damien, Donny Osmond and the late Andy Gibb.
If you watch his face, Joseph is clearly channeling Barbra Streisand during his close-up starting at 3:50 lol
saw the absolute original in London 1973 and it has never dimmed, no matter the cast
That must have been with Gary Bond I take it. Sad he passed away so young.
Good medley -- the got pretty much every good song in there. "Go Go Jospeh" is my fave that one is so catchy. The costumes were really dated compared to recent productions, however.
After viewing this musical I had only one question for the writers, just what kind of massive drugs were you taking when you wrote this?
Well, the tune to Jacob and Sons is in there somewhere
Lol 1:24 I wonder if anyone is ever gonna get that long note I counted and it lasted 17 seconds wowsers.(ended at 1:41)as he gasped for breathe lol
The guys there too have lockdown hairstyles.
The King is quite distracting in that get-up
You're not kidding 'it' came on stage before he did.
My high school did a production of Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat when I was in 11th grade.
My dream musical
um.... I want what they're having.
It’s pink and orange and blue but never mind 😂
It was red and yellow and green and brown and blue - because I forgot to use 'colour-fast' - the detergent that keeps your clothes the right colour !!!
I hope they reboot the show.
Where can I find the part where they sing "Joseph all the Time"? That was the part they featured in the commercial back in '82.
I was in this play one time. Jacob and sons was a lot different
Rice snd Lloyd Webber were all of 18 when they composed this.
lol at blond-haired Joseph
Jason Donovan was blonde
He was blonde
The Original Joseph - Gary Bond, was Blonde.
I went to high school with Laurie Beachman. No one doubted she’d be a star. Her dog Hamlet bit me when I was 15 and my dad said I could sue their insurance company to get plastic surgery. I chose not to, knowing Laurie would be a huge success.
Jeez, did they want to give away the whole show?
Nathan Cox It's called a medley =^)
This was the written curtain call. The show itself is rather short - under 90 minutes so this was written to give the audience a little more for their money.
Hey, genius, the story has been around for thousands of years. I'm pretty the spoiler threshold has passed
That is indeed true, but not everybody knows or reads the Bible.
HOLY MEDLEY BATMAN!
Laurie we miss u
Loved the cut to Ruth Gordon in the audience at the end.
I DONT KNOW IF I AM POSTING THIS CORRECTLY
racking needed towards the end lol who remembers tracking???
Lol it looks as if the narrator is aladdin
She's flying about as high as the magic carpet, I think.
Never have been anyone to match. Few have come close (Stephanie j block) but Laurie was amazing
OH DEAR GOD!
I gotta be honest. After watching this I still have absolutely no idea what this show is about

There are no small parts.

Wow!
I love this musical is a bit fast
lol pharoah's got some buldge
it's that corn cob they were singing about
Joseph is such a preppy soy boy in this version
Edit: 3 years later and I agree with my past self
Is that elvis
No, it's supposed to be a joke about him. I see it worked!
She stole the show
well she should bring it back
This is possibly the whitest thing I think I've seen.
I'm white and I completely agree.
mycheesedguitar Do black people say stupid things like "This is the blackest thing I have ever seen"?
Jeff Eastwood Actually, yes.
It is.
bigots and racists come in all colors and races. grow up.
I dislike the entire design of this show.
+Ben Enter And you are?
Gregory Van Acker a guy with an opinion. I agree with him tho.
Prefer Andy Gibb
I think they all look fake and plastic. The female lead is a great singer with incredible energy, but I’m really glad not to be there to watch it. It feels like being attacked by smiles.
This has always been a godawful show on par with Starlight Express. The Only thing good about it was Laurie Beechman.
