    When it comes to buying a bike, online shops win hands down on paper: they have a wider selection, they usually have better prices, and you can buy everything from the comfort of your own home without putting your grandma in the hospital. But there's some things that online shops will never be able to do compared to local bike shops. Here's local vs. online bike shops so you can decide where to best spend your hard earned money.

    I’ve had LBS that have lied about straight up breaking my carbon steerer and I’ve had LBS that have hooked it up with free work that would’ve been easier to just do than to wait or call me so they just took care of it for free. Everyone’s mileage varies. I recommend knowing how to do 90% of the jobs that have to be done in a pinch and relying on shops for that final 10%. Also helps to build a small network of cyclists around you for some team brainstorming and more area of coverage. During lockdown I quickly became the headset installer, bottom bracket rebuilder, bearing fixer, steered tube cutter as well as a litany of other jobs. Simply because I said “fuck it I’ll do it myself.”

    Zach, the moment you said that local bike shops are operated by "people who love cycling, people that want to make your day better", I just immediately decided to write this comment. That is not the case for the 2 local bike shops near me. They are so unapproachable and self-centered especially if they know that you only ride an entry-level fixed gear. These people won't even bother to entertain you. I may sound bitter, well I am. Dunno why this kind of "bike shop elitists" are prominent here in the Philippines.

      Brazilian here and i completely understand you because our bike shops are exactly that way. I had a cheap entry level MTB once and everytime i had to take it to the bike shops they never take care of it properly. Years later a bought a better bike and the treatment changed by miles.... Unfortunately in third world countries cycling it's a extremely elitist sport. In fact here in Brazil some groups doesn't even let you ride with them depending on how expensive your bike is. Still ride a 26 inch bike? Forget about group rides...

    An older worker from my local bike shop appreciated me trying to resurrect an older road bike, and granted me permission to the scrap heap. However, the rest of the workers think of me a nuisance diving through the dump instead of busting bank for pricey new components. I get it though, they have to eat at the end of the day.

    My LBS is one of my favorite places in my neighborhood (helps that my buddy owns it and another in a separate part of town), and I worked at an incredible LBS this past summer - only time I shop online is if neither of those places can order what I'm looking for (which is rare)

    My problem is all my local bike shops do not carry fixed gear stuff. So even when I’m there. I have to look on line and have them order it. Like I ordered a seat post through one of them. Had to wait two weeks for the first one, wrong one came in. Then had to wait another two weeks to get the right one. But. They’re great guys.

  • @johns3106
    @johns3106 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I've gotten the vast majority of my bike stuff through "mail order" (remember that?) for many, many years for several reasons.
    #1. I'm 6'5", so local shops NEVER have anything in my size
    #2. I'm pretty particular about what I spend my money on, so I really like the variety of choices available on-line...I don't like to settle for what the LBS has in stock
    #3. I don't like dealing with the "bros" at the shop...many of whom haven't been involved in cycling for as many years as I've had my NEWEST bike!
    #4. I really like working on my own bikes, educating myself on the pros and cons of various components, and figuring out repairs. I haven't felt the need to take my bike to a shop in a loooong time.
    #5. And finally...I'm a cheapskate and I really like the lower prices available on-line.
    But, I definitely wouldn't fault anyone for preferring the personal benefits of a LBS.

    I live in London. Almost all small bike shops have closed down over the decade's only leaving corporate owned retail shops. After learning then rebuilding 4 classic bikes summer 2020 I decided to buy 29er Barracuda Draco 4 for less than what it cost to retrofit my 30year old MTB with similar parts. Bike was perfect out of the box only needing grease on seat post during assembly

    I'm a beyond fifty years of riding, cyclist, and it's only important to shop local, if you want to have neighbors, and a community. I don't have a local bike shop, but two an hour's ride either way. This covid scam will destroy our towns, cities, and communities, if we don't remember. I've been building and riding bikes since a boy, am waiting on a "fixed gear", got kind of drawn in by this and well, you know. I've not ridden a fixed gear since the 70's, but, just have to do it, and I can remember the small circle that did so back then. I've enjoyed going around the world too, and found bikes, wood work, and machines a connection in any country, any city. Life is much better when you've seen how much of the world lives, makes you consider your own ways, often. I've really come to enjoy this, something I've not felt in decades. Thanks for the pleasure of revisiting "old friends".

    The streets of Boston are still shite, so I have to watch YT vids instead. We have interesting bike shop options here, community based nonprofit/educational shops, regional bike shop chain, expensive/pretentious tiny shops and trusted hole-in-the-wall shops. I bounce between three of those options avoiding the expensive/pretentious. Current bikes my wife and I ride were purchased from a company that made all-in-one ebike wheels (battery/motor in one wheel) and now is trying to bust into the scooter-share market. The company sold off all bike inventory (basic single speed bikes meant to be sold with e-wheels). Crazy low price. Found out at one of the expensive/pretentious shops (visited when first opened) that they were offered to purchase those bikes in bulk. When shop guy realized that the bike was ordered online his attitude changed and all answers to questions were done over his shoulder as if he couldn't be bothered. I've worked in shops and this attitude tracks with half the people I ever worked alongside. Made a purchase at that "new" shop (pedals and tubes) and never returned. Proverbial flip of a coin nowadays when in need of service. Wait times at shops have been as long as a month, but as fall yields to winter wait times have shortened. However parts shortages can keep a bike at a shop until they receive orders from distributors. During lockdown I've needed no service I couldn't do myself and split purchases down the middle between online and LBS.

    I buy my bikes and stuff from Decathlon,and find the stuff is decent for the price,and sometimes from online.So many local bike shops stock bikes and equipment at frightning prices now.I mean £11,000 for a bike?The shop in question did have bikes for less than that price mind but I feel ordinary cyclists arent being best served now.I want to shop local but they only cater to rich buyers now,not interested in coffees bars in bike shops either......which seems to be the way things are going!

    I have 4 LBS in my area and they are all 4 utter garbage. Never helpful, always refusing to do this job or that job on my bikes because some excuse, policy or whatever. And the few times I got them to do something the result was always worse than doing it myself. Perhaps I have been extremely unlucky with bikeshops but that's my experience.
    Also, they sometimes only sell this or that brand not because it's a particularly good one but more because they have more or less margin or some exclusive deal with the brand.

    I want to convert my racing bike into a single speed (look at the video, I uploaded it). Is that a lot of effort and what about the costs?

    • @markosverdhi
      @markosverdhi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So you have vertical dropouts, so you probably won’t be able to convert it to a fixed gear without getting the chain line/length absolutely perfect. However, a single speed is completely doable, you just need a chain tensioner. Check out r/singlespeed on reddit, people have some really clean examples on there. As far as costs, you’ll need a new chain, rear cog, chainring, possibly a new crank but you might be able to get away with the old one, and depending on your current handlebar/brake setup you might need new brake levers. Good luck!

    Was going through the clearance shoes looking to get some normal non-boa shoes with just Velcro straps.. The had neon pink but not in my size. I was willing to “go there” for shock value. I have zero pink attire currently but they were appealing to me. I blame the Rapha team for making pink look so good. Could only dream of such a cool shop here in Kansas City.
