    In this video I teach you how to import and edit an STL file in FreeCAD. Editing an .STL file is often useful when you need to make minor changes to an already existing model. This will allow you to import STL's from places such as Thingiverse and GrabCAD. I highly recommend you watch my previous videos in the 'FreeCAD For Beginners' series before watching this one.

      So I have found that this method doesn't work. I have an STL I want to edit but I get an error message that says multiple solids whenever I try to make a hole or pad.

    In newer versions (using 0.19 currently) the "Part" menu is all changed up, "Refine shape" is now under "Create a copy" in that menu. Was about to just install v18 so I could follow the tutorial!

      And also I don't think you can delete the (solid) after making the refine copy, it'll ask if you want to break the link, and breaking the link causes issues for me. But after creating the body, they are greyed out, so its all good i think.

  • @camilabborba
    @camilabborba 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I realized that in 0.19 version you have to go:
    PART-> CREATE COPY -> REFINE SHAPE
    then
    PART-> CREATE COPY -> simple copy
    then you created a solid and can continue this video

    Excellent, I've screwed around for nearly 2-weeks with trying to "correctly" modify a intake duct for a quad drone called a Cvatar Cinewhoop. I've wanted to Narrow the inside Diameter of the duct so it's right up to the propeller blade tip to increase the efficiency and lower the noise signature. Now, If I've properly save it. Then I'll head to the slicer and then print it on my Creality CR-6 SE.

    Recently found your tutorials and I like that they are fast moving, and to the point. We can always pause and repeat a section to understand it better. They have filled holes that I have had trying to get on top of this powerful software. That said, after managing to draw a fairly complex (for me) item, I'm getting lost trying to convert it to a single item and create a .stl file that I can use. I would ask for a tutorial on mastering the tree. I seem to get stuck there more than anywhere else. Following a tutorial goes well, but as soon as I go off script with my own design, finding my way through the tree effectively gets me into trouble. I suspect that my weak understanding of the different interrelations is creating the challenge. I have created a file that looks correct, but must not be functionally right, thus, I can't create the mesh and then a .stl. I appreciate the hard work you're putting in, very helpful.

    Just one thing though... in the FreeCad documentation they advise using the mesh design tool immediately after importing the STL file, and analysing the mesh to make sure it's properly constrained before going any further with manipulating it. Do you think this is wise?

    in version .19 the only way to refine shape is to click part->create copy->refine shape. which created a copy dependent on the original object. so you cant delete the original solid shape like in your video. I don't know if this will cause problems I'm brand new to this.

    Not sure how old the FreeCAD version is you are using here , but in 0.19 and 0.20 the Refine Shape has moved to a sub-menu under Create a Copy and after that you can create the sketch but it is not part of the body and won't function properly.. The error mentions using shape binder, but I am lost at that point.
