A few weeks back, I visited professional turner and instructor Matt Monaco's shop in Phoenix, AZ. I was there to film a segment for a recent Guild project but Matt also offered to show us how he turns a spinning top in under ten minutes! He does it all with a roughing gouge and a skew chisel.
During the little interview section at the end, Matt mentions a turning tool company that he really believes in. Here's the link in case you want to check them out: www.thompsonlathetools.com/

Possibly the most wistful manufacturing method ever! ;)
It does. Just put it back on the lathe and it will spin indefinitely. :)
I can't get over how relaxing and awesome wood working is.
Very Nice video. Included turners techniques as well as informative background info.
Why is this so satisfying to watch
Matt Monaco Rules.
Thanks for sharing. Good post.
No. Getting that comfortable with the skew takes practice. I feel very comfortable with my skew and I would still have reached for a spindle gouge on some of those cuts.
Apologies to those who commented on my first upload of this video. There were some technical issues and it needed to be re-uploaded. I choose to blame society.
Nice work!
You are a skew magician.
Hi Matt good Job. My name is Raymond Nater from Puerto Rico .Im woodturner and cabinet making teacher.
I wonder how many kids these days (or even their parents) would have any idea how to spin the good old-fashioned whip-and-top using the whip? I spent many, many hours doing that up and down the street as a kid. These days you'd have to find somewhere away from the vehicles though. Back then, the streets were empty of traffic.
This guy seriously knows how to use his tools in an e
I seriously just thought your logo on the top left-hand corner was the leftovers of me sneezing. Might want to make that a bit bigger and more visible...hahaha
סוף כול סוף רואים אותך חורט.
תמשיך יש המון דברים שאפשר לחרוט
I ask myself the same question every day.
Nice video by a skilled turner. For any beginners viewing, you could make a few like this for practice, then work on a shorter point with a wider overall shape, and if the handle is a bit thinner, it will spin faster & longer. The entire thing can be done with the spindle gouge for those that haven't mastered the skew.
@Retro Game Geek: sure you could make one in under a minute, but it wouldn't be much of an instructional video, would it?
That looks like a great gouge. Do you know where he got it.
Funny how time does that. Sucks that it only happens to me though. :)
sorry to say this Mark, but Richard Raffan can do one in 45 seconds. No joke, he's demonstrated it at many symposiums
It's possible, but probably not with wood. You need a material that is consistent density all the way through, which you wan't get with wood. A good true turning, a wide rim, most of the weight distributed out toward that rim, and a very fine point to minimize drag from the friction with the ground. A starter/launch system that will give you a good strong spin and start the top perpendicular to the ground woudl go a long way, too.
Always cool to watch a master at work. My lathe skills this would take much more time and much more wood stock to complete. 8-)
thanks for posting. 5*****
That is a roughing gouge made by Doug Thompson Google thompsonlathetools
I make pull string tops with my students. We battle them in a satellite dish.
I though you/Matt monaco might be offended LOL
I was wondering the same thing. WTF is that on my screen. Haha
Show? this is youtube!
Damn thought you made a top that spun for ten minutes
seems like a lot of wood waste though.... all that wood wasted at the top by the handle... guess I just don't have lots of access to fancy wood!
What kind of wax is Renaissance wax?
that's the brand name
Is this as easy as it looks?
Five years later- with the skew he's using, it's not as easy as it looks. With about a 1/2" spindle or bowl gouge, much more forgiving. A low profile gouge might be even easier.
As a project, they are a lot of fun and I must admit, strangely satisfying to spin. Relaxing.
Great skill builder. He is using a skew, that is one of the more challenging tools for most people. This is the perfect project to experiment with an intimidating tool. For something like a top, you could use a 1/2" skew if you wanted, at a smaller size, there's less drama when things go wrong.
If I made a top from the blank this man started with, I would have made a bugger top. Also, you can easily chuck up a 12" blank and make several in succession. - it allows you to get in a rhythm and they really are fun to make. If you screw one up- no biggie
Boy am I disappointed I thought someone had invented a top that would spin for 10 minutes.
I want hair like that
Make tops like you tube. Colombian spin top 2006
How did i get here
I've bui,lt a spinning top turning for 10 minutes
Dat hair
Why are you sorry?
I thought a top that spins for 10min.. :P
uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuummmmmmmmmmmm
For a minute there I thought you meant the top would spin for 10 minutes... Color me disappointed.
