Let’s be honest here, Sorrow’s Path can be insane if you’re playing GB token sacrifice. Let us play out a scenario, you control a Dictate of Ereobos and 5 tapped 1/1 Saproling tokens with Slimefoot as your commander and a Mycoloth on the battlefield with 5 1/1 counters.
Your opponent is using a mono red goblin deck with Krenko in the command post. His field is a Goblin Warleader and 6 1/1 goblins with benefits from the leader.
Your opponent swings in with a 2/2 Goblin and the Warleader. You tap Sorrow’s Path and block 2 2/2 Goblins and kill your Saprolings and triggering Dictate’s effect. Killing your opponent’s field.
Then you scoop cause you’re playing Sorrow’s Path.

Sorrows path can be donated to opponents and you can force them to tap it. It will then deal 2 to them and all their creatures as the ability isn’t tied to the actual tap affect. This is a horrible game plan but hey zedruu can sometimes use it for lols

    • @BrotherAlpha

Yeah...didn't you know that Dryad Arbor was printed as a limited edition that could only be found in the first 500 boxes of Arabian Nights? It was because of this limited print (which gave it a near mythical status) that it never made it onto the reserved list so it could be reprinted in Future Sight.

Another fun thing about non-mana producing lands like Oasis - In the old days you couldn't mulligan at will, you had to show your hand had zero lands, or all lands. This means if Oasis was the only land in your hand you could end up stuck with zero mana sources.

My thoughts on each of these picks: (SPOILERS BELOW)
    *10: Archaeological Dig (Invasion)*
Worse than Tendo Ice Bridge, which is worse than Aether Hub. It turns on Reflecting Pool for WUBRG, which is more than most lands can say, and at least unlike some of the lands on this list, at least you can get C out of it at all times... but it's still just so underwhelming.
    *9: Oasis (Arabian Nights)*
What an underwhelming effect on a land with no mana ability. It was probably meant as a counter to Desert... which could tap for C. Yep, Wizards' balancing was almost nonexistent in 1993, and this card is just one of countless examples.
    *8: Rhystic Cave (Prophecy)*
A land that can only be tapped at instant speed is pretty odd. A land that might not even get you mana when you tap it is abysmal. Sure, like Archaeological Dig it turns on Reflecting Pool, but it's still bad - much like most Rhystic cards. (Not Study though, that card's still awesome.)
    *7: Maze of Shadows (Tempest)*
"T: Add C to your mana pool." That's really all I see here. Sure, you might be able to hose the odd Looter il-Kor, but what are the odds of that? Even though Maze of Ith doesn't tap for mana, it's still clearly the better card by virtue of its actually-quite-useful ability.
    *6: Sheltered Valley (Alliances)*
I've seen an Oloro deck draw three cards with this after an Armageddon. Other than that, meh. At most you're gaining 3 life with this, which isn't the worst thing in the world, but it's not particularly useful. Radiant Fountain usually plays the "lifegain on a colorless land" role better anyway, and not many people play that either.
    *5: Adventurer's Guildhouse cycle (Legends)*
lol bands with legends. It took a rule change many years later to make this cycle even remotely worth considering, and even then only in a Captain Sisay deck. The Karakas cycle taps for colored mana; why couldn't this one even tap for C?
*4: Henge of Ramos (Mercadian Masques) and School of the Unseen (Alliances)*
I feel bad about playing Unknown Shores in Limited, and yet it looks incredible compared to these two. They could be worse though... just look at #2!
    *3: Wintermoon Mesa (Prophecy)*
Any land that enters tapped better be damn good to make up for it, and this land... wouldn't be all that great even if it entered untapped. I played this once in my Kozilek deck. Once. Never again.
    *2: An-Havva Township cycle (Homelands)*
Easily the worst no-drawback lands in existence. Sure, they can all get you three colors, but at such a steep cost, it never feels worth it. Well, at least they tap for C without having to pay anything else. So do Wastes though, and since Kodama's Reach can pull them from my deck, I'd honestly rather play them than anything from this cycle.
    *1: SORROW'S PATH (The Dark)*
I think this card speaks for itself. What a trash heap.

    • @michaellee4276
      @michaellee4276 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Jonathan-qk5ed The only problem with banding is that they never put it on the right creatures. Banding only works if the creature is at least 1/2, but they only gave it to 1/1s (or made it cost a fortune). If you ever played Mesa Pegasus and Cr*s*de, you saw how 2 toughness unlocks banding without breaking the game. If they gave Squire banding, it would have been fun but not OP.

I built an EDH deck around Sorrow's Path (for the challenge) and it works pretty good. [FYI: I do not have many of the newer cards, but I make do with what I have]. My Commander is Jacques Il Vert (So all my green creatures will survive the path anyway). I also make use of En-Kors to redirect damage. Tamanoa gives me life for every non-creature damage I deal, so it counters the 2 dealt to me from the Path AND gives me 2 life for every creature I control when I tap the Path. Fungusaur and Wall of Resistance were also obvious choices. Of course I also carry Aether Flash (since my creatures are designed to survive the 2 point hit anyway). It was a fun challenge to build a deck around this horrible card, we were just amazed at how effective it is.
Also, in a multi-player format, the power level of the deck skyrockets because I can use the path to cause chaos (and maybe gain lots of life) by switching blocking creatures when the attack is between two others.

A deck with Stuffy Dolls and Brash Taunters could use the number one land pretty well. Each one would take and deal 2 damage to your opponent, then you could get a big creature through else you switch the blockers to have the damage done to Stuffy or Brash instead. Finish off by having brash taunted fight the biggest threat on board.

In attack you can include one creature without banding into a group of attackers with banding, the group counts as one attacker. Since I was a judge way back then, the mechanic doesn't seem so troublesome to me. If you read the tiny rulebook that came with starter packs back then, there wasn't many cases where banding was problematic. But yeah there's a long list of rulings for specific situations.

There are actually crazy combo decks with Sorrows Path:
You either give your opponent control of the land and force them to tap it, or you play creatures like Mogg Maniac, Boros Reckoner or Swans of Bryn Argoll that profit from getting damage.

You know, I think I could make Sorrow's Path work quite nicely in my Teysa Karlov EDH deck. If someone with deathtouch is attacking the green player and he doesn't block the deathtouch with his big guy I could swap things around to remove two threats at once, AND it would kill a lot of my tokens, triggering a lot of death effects. I might need to get one of these.

simply false. My competitive Kozilek, the Great Distortion deck runs 36 lands and I have about 40 lands in consideration right now. Let's throw some names out there:
*Bazaar* *of* *Baghdad* ; *Command* *Beacon* ; *Field* *of* *Ruin* ; *Nephalia* *Academy* ; *Sea* *Gate* *Wreckage* ; *Sequestered* *Stash* ; *Urza* *Tron*
Are these bad cards? Remember: they didn't make the cut. Whoever runs those useless filter lands or, god forbid, Wastes, either has an EXTREMELY low budget or an EXTREMELY low understanding of the game. Don't generalize colorless decks in such a bad way (having very bad players as the general baseline); mine has won a competitive 64 man tournament.

what i like about this list that you also see that WOTC is the learning curve in card design.. The oldest land is from invasion...
This video also reminded me how awesome the game was back game.. no internet where everyone is netdecking.. That legends cards Adventurous´Guildhouse i remember some1 playing who was collecting only cards from the legends set. He played in multiplayer often a pure legends deck just for the fun and he played that land..
I remember also a boobies deck from him, where he played cards with only female who had a big rack..
And yes, i think the game was alot more fun back in those days, where lots of my old magic club quited playing when a few teenagers joined the club and at every tournament they used netdecked decks and won the tournament. Even in a 2headed giant tournament they came with netdecked decks.. The older guys (30+ yrs old) lost the interest in magic because those kids didn´t came up with these decks theirself.
Yes, the older guys could have joined the darkside and netdecked theirself. But for them the deck design and then win a tournament is part of the game and what made magic interesting and fun for them.
Eventhou i agreed with them on that topic, i never stopped playing magic.

Oasis is actually pretty good in horobi, deaths wail decks in addition to normal lands as a "0" mana hard to destroy card that reads Tap this permanent: if you control your commander destroy target creature. Although it is not the best for this effect.

  • @michaellee4276
    @michaellee4276 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Rainbow Vale from Fallen Empires is strictly worse than Archeological Dig. However it is more goofy, so I imagine that is why it gets more play. It taps to give mana of any color, then you pass control to the next opponent. If your entire group wants to get silly you just pass it around and everybody can cast their harder to cast cards. But if anyone plays to win, they just hold it until they need it for a game changing spell, or to win. Archeological Dig at least CAN be played without giving up card advantage, and at worst it is -1 if you sac it. It doesn't actively help your opponent. Rainbow Vale is WORSE than -1 card advantage and you don't even have the option to tap for colorless.

  • @nlb137

An-havva and co. would be pretty good, I think, if they tapped for one of their 'primary' color, and filtered for the others. Tap for G, or pay [1], tap for R or W.

on casual, i made an annoying deck where my win con was actually Sorrow's Path XD I used donate + then Ring of Gix to tap down the Path every turn. The deck is full Rune of Protections (chose them over Circle of Protections for cycling) + Sleight of Mind + Worship + other cards that will make your opponent want to smack you in the head with a folding chair XD. I think i also ran some counter magic like Arcane Denial and Forbid and some creatures with inherent protection from a color that i sometimes use the Sleight on while Worship is in play
... its no surprise i didnt make a lot of friends when i was running that deck xD
