  • Fun facts about sandwiches #sandwich
The sandwich, as we know it today, is commonly attributed to John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, who lived in 18th century England. The story goes that the Earl, an avid gambler, did not want to leave the gambling table to eat. In 1762, he requested that his valet bring him some meat tucked between two slices of bread so that he could eat with one hand and continue playing cards with the other. This convenient meal quickly caught on among his friends and later spread in popularity, becoming known as a "sandwich."
However, the concept of placing food between bread is much older and can be traced back to various cultures. For instance:
Ancient Jewish Tradition: During Passover, a tradition known as Hillel the Elder (circa 110 BCE to 10 CE) involved placing a mixture of chopped nuts, apples, spices, and wine between two pieces of matzo (unleavened bread).
Mediterranean and Middle Eastern Cultures: Long before the Earl of Sandwich, people in the Mediterranean and Middle East were wrapping or stuffing flatbreads with various fillings. This can be seen in dishes like pita with falafel or shawarma.
Roman Times: The Romans also had a practice of putting various ingredients between pieces of bread, though it wasn't referred to as a "sandwich."
The sandwich's evolution into a widespread culinary staple owes much to the innovation of many cultures and the popularization in England in the 18th century.
