I would recommend watching Living Traditions Homestead for their adding heavy duty straps to their greenhouses to protect the plastic being whipped around from wind and storm damage . It is something to consider to protect your investment in your awesome greenhouse.
Using the tractor when you can for any digging projects is the cats meow!!! It totally saves in physical energy (on your body) when dealing with moist clay, or dirt. Snatch up any deal when it comes to over purchased food in a grocery store. Especially when dealing with organic. That truly was an excellent deal on organic bananas.
Great content as always! All of the no-dig books I have read explain you have to do a few till jobs before you can actually do no-dig gardening. I have noticed people can become dogmatic about the whole no-dig thing which always makes me laugh. Again, thanks for your great content!
Daddy put that camera down with the quickness and took care of business. That flipped my heart over. And then, he drove that tractor like a master. Ben is superman.
Hello, I have only just found your channel and I must say I love you guys. Love the way Meg looks at her husband. You can tell that there is so much love in this family. Love the way the boys help their dad. That little girl is beautiful…Greenhouse looks great.
Welcome to my "soil world". Good old red clay. Tilling is like being beat to death with the pounding of the tiller. After 5 years, I am finally making headway with it becoming a looser soil. Lots of compost, peat moss, composted cow manure and now that the garden is done, let the chickens out and they are doing a wonderful job. My garden is very small - maybe 14 x 30 - if that. But for 2 of us, I get enough to be able to can or freeze and share what I can't use. Love it. Good luck to you - and with your green house. I agree with looking into getting tie-downs to secure it.
I'm always excited when I'm notified the Hollar's posted a new video. 🥰 The greenhouse is looking awesome and I'm excited to see what you plant first. God Bless.
Women who don't cook for their families don't know what they're missing! Praise God for the greenhouse. My heart is melting now watching you all with a tractor, wood chipper, greenhouse, just a cheese press and you're fine:)))
Every time I see Buggy my heart lifts and a smile comes across my face, she reminds Me of My two kids, and the grand and great grandchildren they have provided Me with, she sure is an impish funny little bundle, that's for sure.
When I saw the bananas, I envisions sticks being poked in them and then dipping them in chocolate. They never last long like that in my family. Great buy!
You have the neatest family of all the videos I watch! Your boys are so helpful, courteous. Love watching you, so happy you are filming everyday. I know it is probably not easy!
Love your Family. Quite feeding them so well, they're growing up too fast, but yes,it will be interesting. Thanks for sharing so much knowledge,of what you and wife do.Great video ps Roosters singing, and so is little ,toots, great added bonus!👍🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🏀
Awesome sauce and I dont mean the alfredo!!! Lol. So much goodness is gonna come out of that greenhouse it will be crazy!!! Just a precursor to the japanese greenhouse of your dreams! Loving this journey you have so graciously let us tag along with you on. Hollararians unite! 😜
You guys are doing such a great job. I like that you do what is best for your family and not just what someone else is doing. You are creating such an amazing and creative farm.
I love how you always pray together and I love how your children run around barefoot it reminds me of my childhood you’re doing great mom and dad. I’m waiting for you guys to make cheese out of extra milk it’s pretty easy really.
@Hollar Homestead maybe later you could dig out the hill up towards the chicken pen and make a sunken green house or root cellar. During saying Grace, the little blonde head rising up is such a heart blessing. Enjoy seeing the boys, I mean young men, working with you. ❤❤❤
Raised beds would be good for less backbreaking crop not everything grows in a raised bed from what I understand either way you'll do great you always do. Stay blessed
Really,I've never seen a Japanese Beetle larvae. They usually fly around in the Spring at the Flower Garden. That's where I put the Beetle bag! That's Crazy how much soil moves downward 😫. Hopefully you have some in the Greenhouse 👍. See yah ! JO JO IN VT 😆💕🍁
So, satisfying. I catch myself looking over your shoulder at the neighbor's very large house and very large lawn (pasture?) from time to time. Seems so sterile. Look at what you and family have done in just three years. There is life and thankfulness and that is such a good thing. Blesses my heart too.
Hey Gang, Great Posting, Ben and Meg you are blessed just like Justin and Rebecca with a GREAT working crew, important to teach your children the power, results and satisfaction of working the land and homestead, God's Good Blessings to you and your beautiful family keep up the great work love U guys XOXOXO stay safe and healthy
In the United Kingdom we tend to vary the PVC cover in the ground so when it rains it will go on next side and it won’t come into the ground cause the plastic. It needs for about a foot I’m not usually stops it also in pieces of wood on the inside where the polls are protected when you’re inside you don’t pierce the plastic at the bottom
Hmmm 🤔 I always thought that grubs were beetle larvae and caterpillars were moth and butterfly larvae. The Tomato hornworm is the larvae of the Sphinx Moth. Maybe what you saw was a newly hatched tomato hornworm. I wish that I had seen it. I will replay the video and see if I can spot it. If you see this reply, please let me know what to look for. I love learning more about the natural world.
Oh yeah that diesel shovel works much better! Nice to drag your blade box grader down it too! That tractor is a very good labor saver! It looks more level already! Thanks for the explanation of why you have to wait to start no-till garden boxes and areas. Yes, our rock hard clay soil isn't even worth planting into. We do raised boxes pretty much exclusively. Our clay soil just gets wet and then cracks when it dries. It looks nice in the tunnel after you rototilled. Wow Meg, alfredo sauce with pasta and garlic seasoned chicken, yum! I feel your excitement to get the greenhouse up and growing. This is exciting guys. Thanks for this Hollar family.
You should get the chickens in the greenhouse with the walls up and electric fence around and get them to eat all the bugs and grubs. Bonus will be their poop they leave behind when you move them back to the coop.
I'm almost 60 and remember Mum ringing the dinner bell to call us for dinner. We lived on a farm and that bell could be heard wherever we were. Mum still had the bell.
FIrst time I tried growing carrots in the clay-gumbo here in Kansas, though they were a regular breed of carrots, I ended up getting a crop of little spherical carrots. They just couldn't go anywhere in the clay.
I have been trying to convince my hubby to let his hair get long. I am constantly showing him the hollar homestead video's. His hair is really curly & when it gets a little length it poofs out. But the longer it gets the less it does that. I keep telling him. Look your hair will be like Ben's hair soon enough. lol It's still an on going battle. lol
also if you cut your 🫑 pepper upsidedown you get more of your pepper bits with less cutting... I love y'all so much and love watching your family grow 💞
We have red clay too. Slick as snot when it's wet and brick hard when its dry. 😄 We add all the leaves we can into our garden each fall. My grandpa did that, I'm 63. We always have to plow. It just works for us. We did try a no till area. Its good to experiment. To each his own, lots of ways to grow food.
👨🌾 The chickens are going to love scratching and digging for their own grubs 😉👍🏻 Maybe next video. Another great video guys! Bananas, yay! 💞🍋👍🏻🍳🌺🐾🐾🦋🕊♻️
I noticed the lovely Autumn colours of the trees, such a pretty time of the year 🧡 Great Hollar team work again, thanks for another interesting video 😊

Did you all apply for an NRCS grant for that hoop house? It’s a great program and will pay for individuals or farms to install these. It's purpose is to help people prevent the erosion that you talked about so nicely in this video. Also, don't feel too pressured to do your garlic planting. Garlic can be planted as long as the soil is workable and not frozen, which I imagine isn't a big problem in your area.
@@jasonhatfield4747 when I first applied they said I was a shoe in. Three years and three agents later I was told the money for the program has been redirected to urban projects. I’d just as soon find a used one now. Far less waiting and hassle.
Hard work, good meal, beautiful family, your own land , and the kids being kids. Your baby girl is so adorable. Her singing as you guys work. Mama in the kitchen cooking for her family. Wow I am impressed. I loved being free to explore as a child. God has been good. And all those bananas . How about a couple of banana cream pies, And frozen 🍌 chocolate dip bananas on a stick. Yummy 😋. God Bless your beautiful family 🤗.
I think your family is amazing. I would have loved to do this when I was younger, I did partly and had a good garden but not as big as I wanted, had my chickens, Barnevelders and preserved everything I could get my hands on, it was great, I live in Tasmania, Australia. We only had a double block.
Chickens in the greenhouse while your waiting would be a win win. Too bad the center has rocks as it would utilize the height for plants that you'll have to hang string for. People doors and vents is very smart. Most industrial greenhouses that I've been in have fans(zone 5). I think your greenhouse is going to be a game changer for you. Congrats.
I'm with you Ben, The dirt has got to have enough compost and fluffiness to it so the root system can expand and any root plants will not hit rock bottom,. Love the greenhouse and hopefully we will have one next year al little bigger than we have not. Have a wonderful week and God Bless.
That tilled up soil looks great. Could you turn the chickens loose in there for a few days or for half day for a few days. I think they could get all those grubs out for you. Thanks for sharing your day and great buy Meg on the bananas. So nice of your friend to give you a heads up. Have a Blessed day.
💚 So exciting to see you get to work in the high tunnel green house! You are definitely proceeding towards no-till garden, as you add your lovely compost and woodchips all around the property...Love seeing the boys slicing up bananas for chips 🍌. 💚
Great music once again. It would be nice if you could bring your chickens into the greenhouse for a few weeks before planting. They would really enjoy and know back spring and summer pest pressure! Newly disturbed soil would be really exciting for the hens! My hens love to take me out to the woods to turn over logs for them. It's become a thing after I feed and water them. They come up to me to say it's time to go forage. Go bananas with that greenhouse. 😁
One piece of advice, make sure you do your best to keep your greenhouse temperature below 95 degrees give or take in the heat of summer. Above that temperature plants quit growing...P.S. roll up the sides.
Hiya everyone hope your well. The greenhouse looks amazing, you'll be able to grow more vegetables and fruit....hubby is putting our little greenhouse up this weekend. Love and blessings Hollars xjx
Can I just mention how royal Ben looks with his hair down at the end? I have this picture in my head about 'THE KING' exactly like that. :) (probably from an early children book or something)
I only put dug/compost of higher 2/3rds of beds as the rain will wash it down to lowest 3rd.. but wood chip whole bed to help slow it down.. all fun and games.. keep on, keeping on folks..Great work and video. Much love and respect from North Devon, England x
With all those grubs you could sure use chickens to "protect" your greenhouse. We've strung electric netting around our raised beds to make a little chicken moat. Our beds are 32" tall and will be protected above that with cattle panels so the chickens and most other beasts won't get into the garden. They would also control a lot of grass and weeds around the greenhouse
Y'all's greenhouse looks amazing, don't listen to the hater's y'all do you. I was always told by my Mom if you don't have anything nice to say than don't say nothing at all. Blessing's to y'all
Are you, at the upper end of the drainage before the greenhouse, cutting a channel for a lot of the rainwater to hop down to the lower swale taking some pressure off the greenhouse?
I getcha Ben, I am in Wichita, Ks, major clay soil and then thanks to a "new community" that moved in 15 years ago to my north, now I have bindweed horrible to add to my bermuda problems. Yay! Not! So I buy huge tarps from the sign guy and build beds with tins bottoms and pray that the bermuda and bindweed don't come through them. So far, so good. Love you guys. M.
I think you should have 2 walkways that thing is wide enough to handle it then you would have 3 beds to plant in and would be able to reach the entire bed higher bed if you only have one down the middle your arms are not long enough to reach the other side of the bed
Those white grubs… we call those cut worms. If you find in your garden a plant laying off on the row, dig down to pull the root and you’ll find one of those worms. They go for my peppers- I wrap foil around the base and they don’t bother the plant any more.
I would recommend watching Living Traditions Homestead for their adding heavy duty straps to their greenhouses to protect the plastic being whipped around from wind and storm damage . It is something to consider to protect your investment in your awesome greenhouse.
Yes that’s a good suggestion, those straps seem to really work..
Kevin and Sarah are great 👍 👌

Seeing a family pray together before a meal--now that just makes my day. That is truly a blessing!

Those white grubs… we call those cut worms. If you find in your garden a plant laying off on the row, dig down to pull the root and you’ll find one of those worms. They go for my peppers- I wrap foil around the base and they don’t bother the plant any more.
Hi Ben, you should smile more. You have a beautiful smile.
