He fears everyone because he believes everyone else thinks like he does. He values only status- thinking labels make him superior. Defence spending running at an average of 10% of GDP during the 50's had the useful effect of taking men like Marsh, and removing them from civil society. If this show was reality, Marsh would have likely made SGT by the end of the 50's, but being totally unsuitable for the more managerial level of FSGT, would have been given the boot by 63 when national service ended. Destined to spend the rest of his life bemoaning civilian ways that he perceived as not recognising his true worth :)
@@eddie30991 He's sporting that and the Defence medal in this episode, an unlikely combination missing the 39-45 Star, and the War medal ? In the previous series he had the UN Korea medal up. Given the size of the RAF in those National Service days, a bloke who'd seen service in both WWII and Korea might have been looking at Warrant Officer rank by 1955 ? Or maybe career progression for the per ardua crowd had a log jam at Flight Sergeant level.
