My son died from brain cancer 10 years ago. This song is cathartic for me. Fatherly grief from one Eric to another.

'Tears In Heaven' was borne out of an unimaginably tragic accident involving his four-year-old son Conor Clapton. Conor died having falling from the 53rd-floor window of a New York City apartment when Eric Clapton was elsewhere in the city.Eric Clapton performs in the first version of the music video "Tears in Heaven" from the original motion picture soundtrack from the film Rush (1991) ...

The video shows that the song is the main soundtrack for the movie, Rush, about 2 undercover Vice cops who become addicted to heroin and all that comes w that. Great movie, sad movie.
Yes, it was written after his toddler son fell from a skyrise building, to his demise. Seeing Clapton perform this (bc it was a HUGE hit) at that time...was just overwhelming.

The song is about the death of Eric's 4 year old son in a tragic accident, but was also used in the 1992 movie Rush , which explains the video. Eric said writing and performing the song was hard but helped him no end. The director of the movie offered to not use the song but Eric told him to use it

Ok, this song has NOTHING to do with the video that you just watched it in. The video is from the movie "Rush", and the song was featured in the film, but Clapton actually wrote this
film after the tragic death of his small son, who had died after a fall from a 50-story apartment building (window).

Tears in Heaven" is a ballad written by Eric Clapton and Will Jennings about the pain Clapton felt following the death of his four-year-old son, Conor, who fell from a window of the 53rd-floor New York apartment of his mother's friend, on March 20, 1991. A song that will touch the very depths of all who listen to it.

Eric Clapton wrote tears in heaven for his son. They lived in a skyscraper it was over 50 floors. The child was on the window ledge and fell out of the window because someone forgot to close a window and he was just a toddler. I seen Clapton years after the horrible accident. . He sang tears in heaven and there wasn't a dry eye in the crowd. I figured you would like to know happened. ☮️&💜

The film was not about suicide, guys. The film "Rush" was a 90's film about the male and female couple that were working undercover in narcotics trying their best to make a case on a heavyweight underworld figure portrayed by Greg Allman of the rock group, "The Allman Brother". Superb storyline with great acting featuring a surprise twist at the end of the picture. It is a very good motion picture. Y'all should check it out. btw the girl in the music video is Jennifer Jason Leigh. Wonderful actress and "Rush" is a wicked killer movie. Peace, Fam. Later.

So, despite what the comments say, this song was written SPECIFICALLY for the movie Rush, however Clapton used it as a form of catharsis after not only the death of his son but the death of one of his best friends Stevie Ray Vaughan months before his son died. Eric was on tour and invited Stevie Ray to play with him at a Ski Resort in Wisconsin. After the gig they all flew out by helicopter and the one Stevie Ray was on crashed killing all 5 on board. Eric blamed himself and underwent Survivor's Remorse and then a few months later his son died and it ruined him.

This song is heart breaking!!! Did you all know that Eric is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame four times. More than anyone else!! This song was written after Eric's young son fell 53 stories out an open window. What a heart breaker!!!! I guess a film was made about it. There are clips of said film in this video.. Thru it all Eric stayed sober. So to honor Conner his son.
But you all may have already known this..
I cannot imagine the pain of this tragic event! I rake comfort in that Connor is at peace and in heaven. Thank you all for this review!

It's actually about losing his son. However, it was used in the movie Rush about undercover cops getting involved with drugs while undercover. Greg Allman of the Allman Brothers actually plays a drug dealer.

The first stanza of the song "You would know my name...", using the verb tense, represents himself imagining himself in this fearful and hopeful hypothesis of being where his son would be now (in paradise).
The chorus "I must be strong..." dispels the imaginary and returns to the raw reality that daydreaming is a mere illusion (he can never be in that place).
And the bridge to the end "Then the doors close and there are no more tears in paradise" might suggest that he ended up literally dreaming of what he imagined and wanted so badly for a few seconds and somehow moved on, but didn't get over it, because the chorus returns at the end recalling the fact that he does not belong where his son would be (and because no trauma is overcome, only dealt with in a more or less healthy way).
plaintive guitar arrangements; vocal tone that emits subjection and melancholy; compassionate sound effects; lyrics implying guilt, regret and remorse, one of the worst feelings, worse even than the hurt felt by someone who had hurt you -- at least for those who have morals, ethics, empathy, conscience, a functional limbic system and especially emotional and intelligence. he knows that one cannot and must not be one more in the (catastrophic) "chain of evil".

The magic and power and depth of music can be so cathartic. Extremely sad song about a horrific tragedy in Eric's life. And it's so hard when we have experience that makes us relate to it so closely. Still, it's gorgeous music. Thanks for your genuine reaction - and I'm so sorry for your pain. Peace.
