The most important thing to remember that human nature has not changed since 1934. Her story is compelling on so many ways. We DO live through the context of history and the stories. Sad to think that soon we will not have the survivors of that time. Thanks for your time and energy to remind us to be careful.

Sad to know that soon there will be no survivors left to remind us. God FORBID that our generation, or any future generations forget! We are already seeing attitudes from 1934. We are not above allowing this behavior to repeat. Human nature does not and has not changed since 1934. 😢

Incredible story of survival... my grandparents both survived the concentration camps as well. They were both rounded up into trains from their villages in Ukraine. My grandfather escaped a camp near Dresden when allied forces bombed the city to rubble. He and a few others managed to run during the sudden confusion as the aircraft showed up above them when the sirens went off.
My grandmother was in Dachau and other camps. Black American soldiers liberated them. Because she was taken when she was only 16, living only in a rural village, she thought african americans were only a myth. But now they were liberating her. She thought they were Actual Angels from an army from god as they came down in parachutes out of the skies and spoke an unfamiliar language (English).

In America, historical memory of U.S. participation in WWII is greatly exaggerated and distorted, specifically regarding the defeat the Nazis and ending the atrocities against the Jews. The U.S. government, for example, actively resisted issuing visas to Jewish refugees throughout the thirties, despite its possessing detailed information of their horrendous persecution. Moreover, after the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union began in 1941, reports of mass murder produced no action, either. The reports of the extermination camps (Belzec, Sobibor, Treblinka, etc.) in Poland also triggered no significant response. As for defeating the Nazis, the U.S. launched D-Day in mid-1944, almost five years after the start of WWII. The U.S. played a minor combat role in defeating the Nazis and almost no role in helping the Jews. Joseph Stalin and the Soviet Union defeated the Nazis. One need not be a fan of either to give credit where credit is due. The U.S. swept into Europe at the last possible moment to prevent Russia (USSR) from claiming Western Europe. We should honor our patriotic soldiers, who would have answered the call at any time. We should especially honor the fallen U.S. soldiers, almost two hundred thousand of them, but, also, acknowledge that nearly fourteen million Russians died, half of them soldiers, the other half civilians; also, Russia's cities lay in ruin. We can, also, take pride in the Lend-Lease program. After the concentration camps were liberated by Soviet (Auschwitz) and U.S./Allied troops, the U.S. continued to resist the issuance of visas to Jewish survivors. The Jewish refugees and survivors who did get visas both before and after the war have greatly enriched the United States.

This actually portrays perfectly how bad it was. What I mean is I tell people that however horrible you thought it was, it was worse. Like you couldn't possibly really imagine it. Everyone expects that it was supposed to be like those dramatic moments in movies, but in reality, it wasnt some dramatic moment. A nazi could look at you, and just point. That was what could really determine your death. It wasnt like this whole, oh he almost escaped and got beated, this crazy moment of resisting. Nope, nazi just pointed at him and that determined his death.

I really dislike how this lady is talking about Polish and Poland. Many Poles died in concentration camps and Gulags alike. Please have some respect.

@@Sarah-in1xk what Nazi did to Jews is what Jews have done and still doing to Palestinians, Sara. You are just blindfolded by Western propaganda and "liberalism" ideology. I respect Jews more than you could imagine but Zionism is another "thing". Not to mention that throughout the history Jews lived safer in Muslim countries than your Christian countries. I'm not defending Nazism And specifically Hitler's ideology towards the antisemitism but i believe it's safe to say that we can't declare that all the attitudes and thoughts of Hitler and his Nazi regime towards Jews were wrong. May the one and only God guide me, you and everyone to the right path.

Respected and admired lady Tova Friedman. You are the person with the great first and last names. Tove means beautiful, beloved; good. While Friedman's last name roots are connected to the antique slaves who acquired freedom.
