@05:18 The Lynch version of this story has some of the best costume design. The Navigators' uniforms were literally made out of unused body bag material.

From what I've read on IMDB in the Trivia section for Dune (1984), the body bags were not as unused as you are saying. It says there that they actually had been used multiple times but that they kept this fact from the people who had to wear the costumes in question. 🤢🤢🤢

Norma is mentioned in the original Dune novels. God Emperor of Dune, specifically. It is a short passage telling of her accomplishments. Naturally, BH/KJA had to expand upon that until it got silly.

Hen did it start getting silly? I’m asking since I haven’t read the Legends or the Schools trilogy by BH/KJA yet lol.

    • @lftr_react

It's not silly, it's an abomination. Brian took the name Holtzman, which plays significant role in his father's stories by being synonymous critical technology, and turns it into a fraud.
Leto II said Venport stole her credit for fold space ship design. That's IT. There is not a word in Frank's writings that HOLTZMAN stole research. It's disgusting.
You want to write about a girl boss? Go ahead! Frank set that up for you in regard to the ship. But don't go saying, 'oh and also Holtzman robbed her', so now she's SUPER MEGA girl boss!
This guy can't appease his overlords without trampling his dad's work? No thanks.

You know what gets me about the dune verse? You can make advanced computing without having to make actual AI. We have super computers right now that won’t do anything until a human inputs something. Our supercomputers can’t navigate space, but the same would just be true of quantum computing or higher. Just make advanced computers without making them sentient. It’s a simple concept

I like the last sentence of your presentation, as a lot of people have complained that "we do not see a navigator" in the first two movies, when in reality we already did (though DV himself said these guys with the white robes and the orange visors were not Navigators, which might also be understood in the sense that they were not Navigators YET). Also, we do not directly "see" Navigators in the first Dune novel (the basis for the first two DV movies) either. Plus, the same people who are complaining now about not seeing Navigators would probably complain if there had been a huge infodump about the historical/social background and the various factions in the Dune universe.
I know there have been complaints about the Princess Irulan narration in the 1984 movie, which I do not have anything against because a lot of the chapters in the book are also preceded by passages from books allegedly written by Irulan (in-universe). The same goes for the long narration preceding the Extended TV version of the 1984 movie (though the complaint about that is that it's read by Freddie Jones, the actor who played Thufir, rather than by Virginia Madsen, who played Irulan)
I think what DV was trying to do was to keep the storyline "clean" and straightforward and only give information about things when that becomes necessary for puirposes of the plot..

Besides. After reading the original books, my interpretation was that the navigators "mutated over thousands of years", literally. I mean that they procreated and created a mutated species of human over the course of thousands of years, refining their limited prescience to make space travel ever more safe. Along comes BH and KJA and tells me that every navigator is just a normal human that somehow mutates within his lifetime by exposure to spice gas chambers.
Not at all what I think FH had in mind.

The spice guild taked about in each book, was a human infused with so much spice over the ages. that their shaped changed so drastically that they became non human, yet able to ::bend space time:: with out effort. They project planet A their location then project planet B destination, then simply float to this planet B.. inside the ship, within 30 sec. and the entire enormous ship IS at diestination B. "quote the 30 light years difference" was made shorter! Frank Herbert was masterful as the writer. peace.

Where you are getting that from, good sir? Sounds like the scene in the David Lynch film. I may be mistaken but I don't think anything like that is portrayed in Frank's books. The ability to "navigate", should not be confused with the technology of FTL travel itself, surely? Pre-jihad (and post Leto 2) navigation was also done with machines. Melange-enabled precog. permits safer interstellar travel, but is not some magical teleportation ability. That kind of supernatural mumbo-jumbo was anathema to Frank's vision and is why the BH/KJA writing is so offensive.

I mean, the way they do it is be a prescient hyperspace pilot. They see all the possible futures of the intended jump and if they all involve flying through a star, or bouncing too close to a supernova, they don't go that way.

Her lover was the lover of Norma's mother who was also the first sorceress and originator of the pre bene gesserit coven. The AI enjoyed enslaving humans for labor and experimentation. When man gave up AI they had to resort to slavery. Venport was the founder of CHOAM. I believe guildsmen and steersman were different ranks of the navigator. Without a navigator fleets were destroyed appearing in the sun or planets. Many died before spice was discovered.

I always hate the normal take on God Emperor. Leto wasnt a despot. He was a God. God is beyond our limited understanding and far beyond our judgement. One who is apart from the system is the only one who could possibly understand the system. Um, in the books Leto himself describes his goal is to be such a despot to "teach humanity a lesson that they will remember in their bones" about allowing a tyrant to rule in exchange for stability, and to be so oppressive that as soon as he was unable to exert control, being dead and all, a large percentage of humanity fled so that no tyrant or despot would again be able to control them all.

Their bodies have adapted to live with high spice content, while it would be considered an addiction for others, I would say it is more a product of their environment in the case of the Fremen, especially since many of their sietches are in worm territory where spice would be at the highest natural concentration (hence the spice farming machines having to go so far from big cities on Arrakis and be protected by carry-alls).

@@karinw6255 Yes, but I think they really abolished thinking machines in general, as well as anything that could lead to thinking machines being reintroduced. Remember, even the recording machine that Leto II to record his memoirs is suspect. And I think that "thinking machines" is understood in the sense of any machine that simulates human thinking processes, as far as I have understood from the novels, the criterion is not that it has to do so independently. And as the calculations that an electronic calculator performs can also be done by a human (brain), only not that fast, I would say it falls under the definition. Remember, the Mentats also perform their computations upon request, i.e. with human input, so independence does not really enter into it. Besides, something that's dependent can quickly turn independent; it's a gradual, rather unnoticeable process.

No thanks.
    Non canonical.

I think the spacing guild is an allegory for the American government
Neutrality but manipulating things from the shadows. And given the point of the books I wouldn't put that past Frank Herbert

    • @11alpha48
      @11alpha48 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Given Herbert's analogy to oil, the spicing guild is more like the major multinational oil companies. The American government is basically the Imperial House, thinking it controls things but actually acting at the behest of the multinationals. The major houses like the Atriedes and Harkonnens are the French, British and Soviets, colonial powers squabbling over control of the Middle East.

The guild was created so the novels could exist, they by-step the limits of the speed of light and the need for FTL technology.
    It’s magic dumped into a sci-fi universe.

However, scientists have concluded that space is so vast, that if you traveled in a straight line, you would never encounter another object, star, or planet. So, Herberts lack of science knowledge, had him create a trop that was not needed.

Frankly, I though Denis Villeneuve's version of 'Dune' SUCKED. It had no connective tissue. No common theme. It was just one grandiose set piece after another and left out ALL the intricate lore of folding space, spice mutation, the 'banquet scene', Baron Harkonnen's perversion, etc. Seriously, I honestly thought it was complete empty trash made for casual fans. Paul Atreides did in fact come across as the great white messiah. Both David Lynch's version and the Sci-Fi channel's version were SUPERIOR 'Dune.'

Well I was really looking forward to your video I'm a huge doom fan unfortunately right off the bat you failed you're including Dennis Villeneuve dune in your summary in your video and your overall presentation big mistake villanue dune departs from herbert's dune vastly it's not even in the ballpark of being more accurate so for you to draw any conclusions can you send me video footage from those two horrible movies boggles the mind so now I can't even watch your video and enjoy the material because you've muddied it with garbage stick to real doom there are three Brian Herbert frank Herbert Kevin J Anderson that's it June 84 as much as miligned is the best attempt at bringing the source material to the screen the sci-fi channel also did a kinda OK mini series take at the source material. Where is Dennis Villeneuve decided it wasn't modern enough no we have to race swap and ginger swap and remove characters altogether because of reasons characters who are central to the story no longer exist as far as the spacing Guild goes it didn't exist at all in either the 1st or the second movie just passing mansions no highliners no guildsmen pure garbage you should be ashamed of yourself if you are any kind of dune fan.
