Her husband is tired according to her mother when he came back at 8 pm. She came back at 10 but she is made of iron how can she get tired? Even if she works till 12 am it doesn't matter but her husband returns at 8pm and can't even lift the finger. My parents are the same

Maybe your parents are good people. Not all parents are like that. Well my family is also like yours but the people around me are not. There are parents who literally so patriarchal, even in small things as food, their son deserves to eat first, eat more, eat nutritious but their daughter can survive with just a roti(I saw this first hand when I went to my friends house) , they not correcting their sons when they are mistreating their sisters. I'm not saying everyone are like that, but a lot of them are. We are a few lucky ones, not all are as lucky as us. What we can do at this point is teach out sons and daughters about it, if every single family does it I think we will cover majority of the population. Most Indian parents ingrain into their children that they shouldn’t forget their family no matter what they achieve or are trying to achieve. Ok, sounds like a simple thing to ask for. But no one thinks about the implications- 1. The child is never going to be able to fully devote to their ambition, like Indra said, its going to be a constant battle. 2- the child is going to have a relation with the parents that’s purely based on attachment and expectations, and not one of genuine love and respect. Most Indian parents want to have a dependent relation with their kids, where kids are dependent on them until they are the age where they can finally do everything by themselves, and the parents can depend on the kids when they are older. Whereas it is absolutely possible to have the same exact relation where you simply do things out of love and respect and not dependence. This is the story of most Indian kids because of which they are not able to achieve their full potential in life. Hats off to Indra for achieving her dreams despite of the conflict in her personal life, which I can imagine, was not easy.

Ms Nooyi also discloses that her mother never went to college. This habit of older women shutting down the younger women is repeated all over the developing world. In the Middle East and some African nations, it is the older women who insist on preserving Female Genital Mutilation. It is these older women [not men] who risk all sorts of dangers such as wild animals and robbers to travel from village to village slicing off bits of young girls' bodies because "culture". I believe that one of the greatest enemies that girls and women with great dreams have to contend with in the 21st century is their older female relatives who were never given the opportunity to pursue their own dreams in their professional and personal lives. I worked at a big company. And had the opportunity to go to the home of our female director as her husband was involved in one of our projects and we went to their home to meet him. To our surprise, our director (who was a woman) came out with tray which had tea and biscuits for us!! We were feeling really weird that she was serving tea and biscuits to us but then it was HER home and we were guests! This shows class and the quality of that person. There is nothing misogynistic about being a woman of your own home. It also showed her attitude towards her employees. My respect for her grew a 1000 times in that one gesture!

I feel like no matter how modern or forward thinking an Indian family is, there are always these references to gender defined roles either through moms trying to teach their daughters to put family first, or relatives coming up with wedding discussions as soon as the girl hits 18, and so on. As an Indian girl raised in a relatively forward thinking family, I can say that these were more like threats as to what could happen if I don’t study well and learn to take care of myself. On the contrary, the boys in the family may chose to take these comments as a responsibility towards their sisters or could use these to avoid the same responsibility ( asking the girls to dress a certain way, go out at a certain time, study only certain courses and avoid others etc). Ultimately, these comments harm the boys in the family more than they do determined and goal oriented girls 🤷🏻♀️ And then there are reserved families that ... well I hope the girls find their happiness in whatever their life has to offer.

I would wash utensils , mop the floor, dry the washed cloths etc. My mom would simply say you might be a Manager at your office but when you come home you need to help me with house hold chores. Maybe your parents are good people. Not all parents are like that. Well my family is also like yours but the people around me are not. There are parents who literally so patriarchal, even in small things as food, their son deserves to eat first, eat more, eat nutritious but their daughter can survive with just a roti(I saw this first hand when I went to my friends house) , they not correcting their sons when they are mistreating their sisters. I'm not saying everyone are like that, but a lot of them are. We are a few lucky ones, not all are as lucky as us. There are still parents who think that their daughter doesn't need any education beyound their school, (a family friend, stopped going to their house after the incident) .

Most Indian parents ingrain into their children that they shouldn’t forget their family no matter what they achieve or are trying to achieve. Ok, sounds like a simple thing to ask for. But no one thinks about the implications- 1. The child is never going to be able to fully devote to their ambition, like Indra said, its going to be a constant battle.
2- the child is going to have a relation with the parents that’s purely based on attachment and expectations, and not one of genuine love and respect. Most Indian parents want to have a dependent relation with their kids, where kids are dependent on them until they are the age where they can finally do everything by themselves, and the parents can depend on the kids when they are older. Whereas it is absolutely possible to have the same exact relation where you simply do things out of love and respect and not dependence.
This is the story of most Indian kids because of which they are not able to achieve their full potential in life. Hats off to Indra for achieving her dreams despite of the conflict in her personal life, which I can imagine, was not easy.

The incredibly sad reality many girls go through.
Wow...have learned soo much from seeing how people respond to this professionally accomplished lady putting herself down. People always say 'fight for women's equality' and whatnot, but one needs to see see first-hand how to do this. Soooo many women tell proudly about how they were cut down or their professional accomplishments ignored by people who are supposed to be supporting them. For the impressionable young girl hearing such a testimony, it will sound like all women- no matter how much they have achieved- should have someone around them who discredits their accomplishments every so often in order to "return them to their rightful place".
I think older women who were forced to be the traditional wife and mother and never had any opportunities to follow their dreams tend to feel extremely jealous of the opportunities that today's younger women have. This makes the older women even more defensive of archaic tribal customs that destroy women. It is Indra Nooyi's mother... [not her father/brother/husband/son/uncle]... who pretended like Ms Nooyi's professional accomplishments were not as important as her being the servant of the house. Ms Nooyi also discloses that her mother never went to college. This habit of older women shutting down the younger women is repeated all over the developing world.
In the Middle East and some African nations, it is the older women who insist on preserving Female Genital Mutilation. It is these older women [not men] who risk all sorts of dangers such as wild animals and robbers to travel from village to village slicing off bits of young girls' bodies because "culture". I believe that one of the greatest enemies that girls and women with great dreams have to contend with in the 21st century is their older female relatives who were never given the opportunity to pursue their own dreams in their professional and personal lives. This is a far more difficult battle to fight than the one against male misogynists.

I worked at a big company. And had the opportunity to go to the home of our female director as her husband was involved in one of our projects and we went to their home to meet him. To our surprise, our director (who was a woman) came out with tray which had tea and biscuits for us!! We were feeling really weird that she was serving tea and biscuits to us but then it was HER home and we were guests! This shows class and the quality of that person. There is nothing misogynistic about being a woman of your own home. It also showed her attitude towards her employees. My respect for her grew a 1000 times in that one gesture!

Inspite of the fact that Mom had limited exposure to the outside world, she allowed her daughter to pursue her higher education in a foreign country, to establish a career of her own and to marry someone of her own free will...decisions which were unthinkable in a conservative South Indian family for which Mom must have been heavily criticised by society then!! She may have been concerned if her daughter's career growth may harm her family relationships at home, and her way to keep her daugher firmly grounded. Of course it is to Indra Nooyi's credit that she broke out of the system, balanced all her roles and reached this space in her life!

I feel like no matter how modern or forward thinking an Indian family is, there are always these references to gender defined roles either through moms trying to teach their daughters to put family first, or relatives coming up with wedding discussions as soon as the girl hits 18, and so on. As an Indian girl raised in a relatively forward thinking family, I can say that these were more like threats as to what could happen if I don’t study well and learn to take care of myself. On the contrary, the boys in the family may chose to take these comments as a responsibility towards their sisters or could use these to avoid the same responsibility ( asking the girls to dress a certain way, go out at a certain time, study only certain courses and avoid others etc).
Ultimately, these comments harm the boys in the family more than they do determined and goal oriented girls 🤷🏻♀️
And then there are reserved families that ... well I hope the girls find their happiness in whatever their life has to offer.

This not misogyny.. I am a south Indian male and my mom made me do house hold chores even in my 30s. I would wash utensils , mop the floor, dry the washed cloths etc. My mom would simply say you might be a Manager at your office but when you come home you need to help me with house hold chores. It was a reasonable request and I felt it is anyone's duty to help their parents or to do household chores irrespective of gender. Today we have a maid who helps in house hold chores but me and my sister carry out our duties are son and daughter
