- Watch Byomkesh Bakshi's first episode Satyanveshi which starts with Bakshi taking up his first case. Byomkesh Bakshi is a fictional detective in Bengali literature created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. He is one of the most successful and popular characters in Bengali literature.
Doordarshan now brings to you the entire series of this literary classic which was televised back in 1993 directed by the brilliant Basu Chatterjee. Actor Rajit Kapur played the role of Byomkesh Bakshi, for which he was highly praised. Ajit was played by K.K. Raina and Satyaboti was played by Sukanya Kulkarni who was the first actress to play the character.

I was in school when I watched this on Doordarshan. Today, I’m 47 & watching this again. Much happened between my last watch n this watch. I lost my childhood & my mother n all those golden days of my Life………………..😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
I also turned 47 this past December and just as with you, a lot happened with me. I am sorry for the loss of your dear mother. I lost my parents as well. Well, Babu Ji, I have lost a lot in life since the 90's. It seems like a losing streak. I am another Ajit Babu. Just that, I don't live in a lodge but in a flat. I have more respect to the crew who made such a wonderful series back in 1993. Today's serials are nowhere to the level of simplicity and finesse that Byomkesk Bakshi had.

FYI, I was one of those school kids who was enchanted regular viewer back then.
I revisited now with the same expectation and even remembered the "raaste ka kaanta" episode and the cycle bell.
But today I was shattered to find out how innocent and gullible I was as a kid ... I truly repent watching it

We all praise bengali contemporary actors as byomkesh but rajit kapur is the best of all.. I am possibly the greatest fan of his because I'm mesmerized by his acting skills and handsome look.. For those asking how the door was locked from inside, you will find this answer in the book, for those who haven't read, the lock used is an Yale lock. An Yale lock actually locks the door from outside, but the doctor being the murderer lies to Byomkesh saying it is locked from the inside. And apparently the Yale lock can only be opened with a key from the outside or without a key from the inside. Assuming one condition that there were no duplicate keys and the original was inside, they had to break the door. But yes, the question does occur, why there was no duplicate key with the doctor. Maybe old times.

Thank You! But when the doctor leaves the room after the murder, he seems to be just leaving it, not even closing it properly. If he comes at a later time, he would be surely noticed. But it could be argued that that portion is Bakshi's narrative description of what happened.

No, he is very different from Holmes. As much as I love Holmes, in many cases Holmes is not a wholesome person. (not referring to BBC Sherlock) He takes 7% cocaine, is a misogynist sometimes and is a recluse from the society. Byomkesh on the other hand shows, you can have extraordinary mind and analytic power and you can be a guy next door, a loving faithful husband and a great father. Byomkesh is more approachable, more flesh and blood than the Great Sherlock Holmes, who is the pinnacle of intelligence, but unattainable.( I am excluding friends because both Sherlock and Byomkesh are loyal to their best friends, Ajit and Watson, to their last breaths.)

The roll played by character is very natural. And every suspense and cases is very truly and logically cleared by byomkesh , want to see more this type of serial. I am lucky that in childhood I have seen such type of serial.

Directors who are currently making films in Bengali on this iconic detective have added too many adult scenes, making the films unsuitable for most people. I came to know about this series after its director Basu Chatterjee's death, and luckily Doordarshan still has the tapes in a good condition. Happy to be able to finally watch Bomkyesh Bakshi. Modern directors: learn from this man how to make movies.

However, later elucidated Byomkesh the mechanism of the lock to Ajit while the latter had asked the same question to the former (who is Byomkesh Bakshi, the inquisitive, satyanweshi( সত্যান্বেষী)).
