    I firmly believe that upgrading the neck to a graphite neck reduces all the possible dead spots that wood can have so you're always gonna have a solid flat bright sound!

      @@LowEndLobster I have only had the luck of playing on a headless 1989 S2 Status bass... apart from the sound being in your face, i can still remember the clarity of that neck when the bass was at zero volume...

    That was a really cool video and the bass looks and sounds great!! I strongly prefer the bass you built over the Mexican P bass and I actually really like the P bass. The tone of the Status P is complex and really stood out with the tone backed off and it just looks killer. I have been begging off bass projects for a while but a video like this can get those juices stirring again.

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very nice bass. I did a similar project about 8 years ago, I bought a freshly refinished MM Stingray body on eBay, a Status Graphite neck and loaded it with EMG's and a badass bridge. It was my main bass for years until I got a Modulus Flea bass. Unfortunately the Stingray had to go to pay for the Modulus

  • @samlelowitch

    A lot of people like their bass builds to feature necks that need adjustment less often. Obviously graphite is pretty much never going to need adjustment (does this one even have a truss rod?) but I wonder if roasted maple tends to be more stable as reputed-or perhaps it depends on the particular piece of roasted maple and how it is cut.

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great comment! I would think that each individual roasted maple neck probably has some variance in weight and structural stability (though the roasting process does improve that) based on wood being wood. Carbon fiber probably has much less variance from example to example in terms of density and whatnot. Honestly, I've had this neck for like 9 years and it used to be on my daily driver franken-J. I could leave that thing sitting for a couple years, pick it up again, and it would be in tune and exactly how I left it. Status makes amazing necks, and the prices have improved now that the USD and GBP aren't as far apart as they once were.

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Honestly, I forget. I have the body right buried under a pile of bass stuff (this project is returning, don't worry haha). Strings on this were black beauties, as opposed to the original strings on the MIM (the ones that I bought it with, trying to emulate the "noob" bassist buying a bass online and not knowing to change the strings).

  • @rqkeating
    @rqkeating 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    What were the strings on each bass? That probably contributed a fair amount to the difference in sound too.

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The DIY P has DR Black Beauties and the MIM P has the strings it came with when I got it a month or so ago. Not sure if I should change em of not. Trying to emulate the "average" bass with the MIM.

    I just found a place who will build me the exact neck I wanted, hmmm. I might be able to assemble a pretty dope bass if I just drop 900 bones on a fretless 5 neck, get double reinforced rods
    medium D shape, 12 -16 radius
    ck hardware and that dark ebony fretless board, nice and fat 5 string sturdy neck, inverse inline headstock with ebony veneer, this gives you a tighter B and looser G instead of the reverse, which is perfect for a 34 vs 32 scale for me is a big deal !. things 24 frets is too many, I prefer 21 frets. 30-34 inches is too big of a deal. You like to make things hard, for yourselves ?. I need to wet my 34 bass down some, throw some chicken grease on there, boil them strings or something, thing plays better if damp or something.
    You like friction, I guess and these frets are like hitting curbs on a bike, boom, boom, boom, ouch. Why jumbo frets or wait, why frets ?. Can anyone give me a good reason to want frets ?. I can't buy more fretted basses unless I had a reason to. Becomes a fret fest
