Not wrong about Dragons fans waiting for a new coach, the whole club is a mess. Poor recruitment, lack of leadership and constantly in the headlines for silly things (today included). They need to get someone like Shane Flanagan in who has a proven track record of turning a club around (I would argue the Sharks were in a worse position when he took over). It's also super rare for a coach to take a club from so low to a gf winning team. I really don't understand why it's so hard to figure out. The squad also sucks, how Woods makes it into the team let alone being recruited is beyond me. Recruiting reserve graders from the tigers etc....just terrible. It's really frustrating and I'll admit that all last year I was hoping they would lose just to force change and I'll be feeling the same way this year. Super annoying
It's worth mentioning that Api was also a frequent misser of many tackles, he always had his backup because he was a small hooker. He was a gun because of his creativity, which is what Soni excels in. Once we locked down the guys around him our defence should be a brick wall again!
Kempy how about Brendan Piakura! Was disappointed you didn't mention him, really thought he took his first opportunity of more than 10 minutes in this side. Compound that with Jordan struggling again. Could see Brendan starting within 4-6 weeks.. he's been killing it in Q-cup a few years now, very defensively strong...

Got to take into consideration managing these players workloads. The majority of Panthers players have played an absolute tonne of games off 2022 NRL season is longer and much tougher physically, Origin series into the World Cup. Now understand just about all those guys would’ve had more than the standard time off to rest recover ect get the body right before hitting pre season. So if anything when you look at the pack a lot of those guys would have been managing their bodies for a long season. Which means their training loads and time would be considerably reduced to allow them to get through the season ahead. Cudos to St Helen’s absolutely outstanding but that Panthers side would’ve come out literally blowing off the webs for match fitness in pre season. And as players nobody gives any shits about trials so take it for what it is Helen’s we’re brilliant and tough. Panthers underdone still working through a preseason after a giant 2022 and played the worst game of footy in years. But guys imagine Roby playing 9 for England would’ve been so good to see could’ve made a massive difference

This is exactly what I said about the Panthers "I don't think there's a thing to worry about with the Panthers. They were missing Cleary Edwards Fisher-Harris Leniu martin Sorensen Yeo. That is a fair whack of players. So Panthers DO NOT worry at all."
St Helens 100% deserved it, but in the end they got pretty lucky to win it. 3 guys offside off the kickoff in extra time, more often then not that'll be called a penalty & Cleary gets a crack from 20 metres out infront.
Do you not think Penrith was lucky on their first try? Turuva had no intention of challenging for the ball, taken Welsby out who had a hand on the ball, I think it should have been a penalty to Saints rather than a Penrith try
I think penrith would of played alot different if they had a trial run with their starting team before the wcc. Even if it was for 40mins. It would of helped alot with timing with passes and combinations. St helens would of got alot from their first run with st george and where they should work on and timing. You can train all you want but match fitness is a different level.
I think the Panthers will find this season unlike anything they have dealt with over the last few years. My prediction is Penrith to finish 7th. Great podcast gents.

Admittedly the nrl is a tougher comp than super league. But the question is worth asking. What is it that super league is doing right? IMO Sironen, Matautia, and maybe Even Hurrell are better and fitter now than they ever were in the nrl.

Mate the reason they are fitter is pretty simple they can play more games because they only really come up against hard competition 4 times a year. I watch super league pretty regularly and there is lucky to be 4 teams in the comp that could even play NRL standard. St Helens obviously are an amazing side but would be very intriguing to see them play NRL level team week in week out and see if those players bodies could last. The truth is teams like Titans and tigers would be finals teams in super league. Penrith got out played on the week no doubt about it but probably their worst performance in 2 years and just stupid unforced errors left right and centre and still almost won. If Penrith played sharkies or storm the other night they put 30 on them.

Players that the NRL pundits constantly put up on a pedestal looked quite ordinary. The obstruction penalty for Dodds first drop goal was pretty soft considering what Penrith get away with every week and I think the Hopoate try should have stood, as did the commentary team.

Freakishly intuitive at knowing where the ball will be at any time. Scored one against Penrith. Set up another. Three last ditch try-saving tackles and he could easily have had a couple more assists had the referee known what the hell he was doing. But it's the winning intangibles which set him apart. Picks out the opposition's best player and goes straight for the throat. Kind of guy who would hit you over the head with a shovel if you beat him at Monopoly. Whoever wins his signature will be a serious contender for silverware every year (barring injury). The only guy I can think of who had that kind of talent and determination to win-at-all-costs was Ellery Hanley. But Hanley was more of a try-scorer. Welsby is the complete package.
As a newcastle fan, it’s pretty obvious our starters do some stupid shit on a weekly basis, but a key issue I see is we have too many players who should not have a position in the top 30, this creates a domino effect where our starters aren’t punished for poor performances. However I am optimistic about this spine and I feel like we will go well, but it is early days.

The problem we have is the team is highly structured and systemic which wins majority of games in a year - however as we have seen in origin and again in this game they lack the ability to adapt if the game environment changes eg refereeing, unchecked offside, heavy hits or weather …. Could be wrong but that’s where cleary similar to John’s 04 origin needs to take control of the game
Penrith rested 4 for the world Club challenge including Martin and Edwards two of their stars. Chrichton really had an underwhelming game at Fullback. if Edwards played Penrith more then likely win.
