Mr Lownie's book is a brilliant read and answers so many questions. So many think of Edward as some love-struck Romeo. In truth he was an awful person and would have been a disaster as King. He didnt care at all for the people of the Empire, he only cared for himself and Wallis. Not to mention his treasonous activities before and during WWII.

Andrew Lownie’s book is excellent, as is the documentary he did on the same subject. Wallis Simpson has been derided for decades as the woman who stole a King, but personally I think they should have made the woman a Dame and thanked her for her services to Britain when she married Edward, who was quite possibly the most selfish, self-centred and stupid King we ever (albeit briefly) had. The fact is that Edward had never wanted the throne, but he did like being the centre of attention and he could only achieve that as King. In the past there was a lot of speculation about him being a Nazi sympathiser and I think people thought his sympathy stemmed from naïveté. Now we know it went much further than that and Edward was a Nazi supporter. Edward was probably naive, but only in the sense that he probably convinced himself Hitler was genuinely interested in him and that Hitler would put him back on the throne with Wallis as his Queen. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out that Hitler was unlikely to do any such thing, or if he did it would be on his terms. Wallis Simpson, in marrying that pathetic, spineless little man, did the country a favour.

YES, IT SEEMS HER KEEPING EDWARD OFF THE THRONE INDEED DID THE (WORLD) A FAVOR.!!
I THOUGHT IT INTERESTING WHERE MEGHAN AND HARRY ARE CONCERNED HOW MEGHAN ALIGNS HERSELF WITH WALLIS BUT THEN AFTER THE HALLOWEEN DEBACLE W/HARRY iN A NAZI UNIFORM I BEGAN TO WONDER THEN IF HE WASN'T TRYING TO TELL THE WORLD SOMETHING ABOUT HIS POLITICAL VIEWS, IE, HE AND SHE LEAN COMMUNIST!! AS OF COURSE DID WALLIS AND EDWARD.

I forgot to mention that I am an historian of sorts and have read dozens of books about Edward and his life and times. Mr Lownie's book is the best and most comprehensive one I have read.

All their behaviour to other people, friends, staff and organisations was so disgusting and we seem to have this now with another member of the royal family and his wife. They seem to get away with it as well. This cannot be covered up, they should be shown up for the selfish entitled, arrogant people they are. After all, we are all members of the human race and they have no right to place themselves above anyone else. As you say they deserve each other (both couples) but we don't need them and their vile behaviour.

They played Edward using Wallis! Thankfully for Britain they got him to abdicate! He and Wallis deserved each other! She was an absolute gold digger! They were both selfish, shallow and self centered. I do believe they were both bisexual which bonded them!

I am in no way defending Edward but had a very cold upbringing with no emotional nurturing from his parents. I do think that after his resignation from the monarchy his behavior became a quest to remain important and relevant on the national stage. This attention seeking behavior left him wide open for Nazi manipulation. Edward’s visit and collaborations with Germany were fueled from this behavior. Having been made irrelevant through his British family, he now placed his new German acceptance over his position as a British citizen and military officer. And sadly he lacked the common sense and intelligence to realize why this behavior, especially during war time, was so wrong.

I think the documents show he was pro fascist before the abdication. I think Stanley Baldwin maneuvered him into position where he had to abdicate because they saw the underlying personality.
He encouraged the bombing that killed and maimed a lot of people. He gave the Germans information in the French military: how many lives were lost because of his aid to the enemy? How many people lost their homes, businesses and careers?
There is no excuse for any of this. Normal people were executed for treason after doing far less.
He had no capacity for empathy…
And the psych explanation you posit in no way justifies tolerating any of his actions

i doubt the very first premise...if Edward had been " Churchill english " straight even i doubt he could have made a marriage to a divorced american non royal woman get through. Its not like Kate even wasnt questioned WAY later and being perfect apart from not being too blue blooded. Edwards brother didnt introduce this sentiment he grievingly cobtinued it. No way british society would have let that fly. I guess in some higher places sympathy for nazis was bigger even. :-D
