I love you cactus garden ❤. It looks beautiful like my aloe vera garden. I have more than 50 large aloe vera plants. Today I got 2 cactus🌵 pads and would love to start a big garden for cactus. By end of this year I should have atleast 30 plants..
Yep, that's how I do my beaver tails. Although I do use regular soil until I can't get a good amount of dessert soil mix. I use four inch pots to start mine and put them in a watering try under a T-5 grow light for winter and add water to the tray when needed.
Thanks for this video. I had two nice looking cacti plants. My daughter wanted to surprise me ny helping me weed my garden. She pulled them up. Omg. I went to the market to get more. I am having trouble getting them to root. I tried to water propagate them. I will try soil.
I love your garden! 😍 Thank you for sharing how to propagate prickly pear cactus. I ordered some pads online and I’m hoping to make my own cactus garden. How long did it take for your cactus to grow so large? So beautiful 🤩
What gloves are you using to handle them? I bought some that were suppose to prevent pricking and within the first 5 minutes, I was getting pricked through the gloves.
Have you any idea on the different species available. What fertilizers can be used and how much water do they need per plant? How much time does it take to be a fully grown plant? I will be grateful for the info. I am planning to grow the fleshy type.
@@VivaLasVeggies yea from the prickly pear jelly and syrup can be made, from the pads after the spines and glochids removed can also be made into jelly but I would use the prickly pear fruit I seen someone say they made a jelly with the pads, and added a berry for flavor. You can find recipes for food and some drinks using the cactus they have to be nopales type.
Viva,we moved to Rio Rico AZ 2016. We have 4 GIANT Prickly Pear cactus, about 12-15 ft each. Do I water or wait for monsoons to to their job? Thank you,Brian
I m in Marrakish and they have plenty here, I was kindly given 3, 4 pads to regrow in the UK. Do they need cover in frosty weather? Help please How much water they need?
Deeba RS they don’t need much water probably less there since it doesn’t get to hot? Here in the desert cab get pretty hot high 115. I water once a week and sometimes I even skip a week. It does get pretty cold here in the winter low thirties and I have never covered them. I suppose you can cover them though.
With dragon fruit, they suggest the cutting to callous over before planting so the wound does not rot in wet soil. Is that process not necessary for prickly pear?
john mazzola it depends how big and thick the pads I use. I like to use big mature pads when propagating so it’s strong and sturdy when it gets new growth.
I have discovered that letting them callus is best. Doing so, all my cuttings have survived 😊 before when I didn’t, many wouldn’t make it. And callus happens fast! Three days to a week.
Can anyone tell me what species of cactus the one shown in the video is? I know it's opuntia somethin but that's all I know. It's a very beautiful cactus with large thick pads that I would want in my yard. Any info would help!
After cutting it is advisable to leave them to heal the cut portion over (callous) to allow the skin to grow over like a bandage. It reduces rot after planting. Just leave the cut portions to lay out in a dry shady area.. indoors or under a tree where the sun won't blast them and where water and soil won't get on the fresh wound. Leave them there for a week to ten days... they'll 'hold' that way for months too as long as they stay dry.
Garden love I most definitely eat them! I like to cook them our use them in smoothies. But I only use all the new growth pads, those are the best for eating. Mature ones are a lot more bitter and lots of work cleaning them.
I live here in baltimore, md.. it gets very cold my catus grows very slow, I planted it in a tree trunk.. what could I do now tge weather is breaking to get it to bloom better and get taller.. it just dirt around it.. I have yet to put sand or anything..

juicefusaro if you keep it in a bucket make sure to add rocks on the bottom of the bucket so it has good drainage. Cactus needs very little water. You can water every two weeks.
Thats a great idea i hate wasting them when I prune.. I have bought some varieties from EBay for like $10 for 5 small cactus pads. Best of luck good video.
Life Hypnotic Absolutely! You harvest the pads when they are young and thin. That’s the best time to eat them. You can eat them raw or cooked. Of course you need to make sure to remove all the needles fist. I used a thin knife to scrap them off 😊
Nope. I just trimmed back all my cactus plants. They were huge! I filled up two trash bins. Next time ill let you know and you can have some. They grow fast!

The Pitayas I grew up with (in north-western Mexico and Arizona) are the best, but they are produced by saguaros..... huge cactus, many, many years to grow!
I learned two really good tips from your video: cut them right at the very, very base; and use rocks steady them up straight. Thanks!
I wish I had cacti like that in my house. Magnificent beauty 😍❤️
Beautiful i love the desert plant look
This lady knows a thing or 2 about 🌵. Glad I found this video!

those are the most beautiful and perfect cacti I have ever seen!!!!!
Amber Davis Aw Thank You! ☺️❤️
Rocks on top of soil also help hold in moisture and cool the roots. Ancient Puebloan gardening method.
And probably ‘thermal mass’ to help with cold once the sun goes down.

I noticed the you did not let the pads scab over. Is that because of the kind of dirt you used?
I think she played the neighbor on Home Improvement. Never quite see her face. Just a hat.
How much water do they need after you planting
You must have to make so many soil amendments to grow anything other than cactus.
Epetra Compost! 😊
I have plenty cactus but the problem all died. The middle is rooted. I don't know how to care.
With dragon fruit, they suggest the cutting to callous over before planting so the wound does not rot in wet soil. Is that process not necessary for prickly pear?
You should let the wound callus over with most any cacti before planting it in order to avoid rotting
Will the pad you plant get bigger or just grow new pads? Im trying to figure out how to get it big and strong so it will grow tall with los of pads?
john mazzola it depends how big and thick the pads I use. I like to use big mature pads when propagating so it’s strong and sturdy when it gets new growth.
I live in Las Vegas, I’ve got two kinds of opuntia, and I’ve been searching for some with pads that size. Could I pay you to get a cutting? Thank you.

Emanuela Davis I noticed the fruit when my cactus plants were a bit mature. I get them all the time now every year. They are really tasty! Thanks 😊
VivaLasVeggies is it the tunas?
This kind of cactus can start to flower and have fruit the next year after planting, depending on its environment.
Yes, tunas are the fruit.
Also known as ‘Prickly Pears’.... makes great jam.
